How Charles Schwab Pays
Schwab's L54 to L60 technical and Associate to Managing Director corporate ladders priced across 14 US markets and the new Hyderabad centre, with a 15 percent discount ESPP, discretionary RSUs, a 60/40 PBRSU and option executive mix, an $18.76M CEO package at 143:1, and 585 FY2025 H-1B filings.
Band Hierarchy
Schwab does not disclose a company-wide band-to-title table. Public evidence supports two overlapping structures: a technical sequence reported as L54 through L61, and a corporate sequence of Associate, Specialist, Senior Specialist, Manager, Senior Manager, Director and Managing Director. Only the named executive officer and board tiers carry a company disclosure.

Hierarchy qualifications and legacy structures
- Vice President is not a dependable vertical rank at Schwab. It appears in branch manager, investment consultant, retirement sales and advice titles, where it functions as a client-facing role prefix, and it can sit beside Director rather than above it. Modelling a VP to SVP to EVP ladder would misstate the company's public nomenclature.
- Managing Director is the recurrent senior function-leader title in current leadership materials, and the Chief Financial Officer and the Head of Investor Services both carry it, so the same title spans an ordinary function head and a named executive officer.
- The L54 through L61 sequence is employee-submitted technical evidence rather than an official global matrix, and it is most reliable for software, data and quality engineering roles.
- L61 Distinguished Engineer surfaces as a level label in public data but carries no disclosed pay at all, so it appears in this catalogue without a band row.
- The TD Ameritrade acquisition left a legacy geography in Omaha and 37,815 assumed restricted stock units outstanding at 31 December 2025, but no public pre-merger and post-merger grade crosswalk exists, so title harmonisation is not publicly disclosed.
- Role-family dispersion inside a band is larger than the gap between adjacent bands in places. The Associate row spans high-volume service roles in the mid-$50,000s and credentialed Associate Wealth Advisor roles above $100,000 on the same posted range.
Peer-level mapping
| Band | Archetype | Peer mapping | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intern | Software Engineering Intern / Academy Associate | Fidelity technology intern, Capital One Technology Internship | Internship pay is quoted hourly or monthly in postings and annualised here.Public internship submission, annualised; no material stock component reported. |
| L54 | Developer I | Fidelity Software Engineer I, Capital One Associate SE, Google L3 | Schwab publishes no level crosswalk; scope-based orientation only.Levels.fyi median with an observed 7.7 percent bonus-to-base and an annualised stock component of about $267. |
| L55 | Developer II | Fidelity Software Engineer II, Capital One SE, Google L3 to L4 | Schwab publishes no level crosswalk; scope-based orientation only.Levels.fyi median with a 5.7 percent observed bonus-to-base and about $750 of annualised stock. |
| L56 | Developer III | Fidelity Senior Software Engineer entry, Capital One Senior SE, Google L4 | Schwab publishes no level crosswalk; scope-based orientation only.Levels.fyi median; submissions at this level report no material annual stock component. |
| L57 | Developer IV | Fidelity Senior Software Engineer, Morgan Stanley Vice President engineering | Peer VP titles in banking are a grade; at Schwab VP is a client-channel role prefix.Levels.fyi median with an 8.6 percent observed bonus-to-base and about $3,000 of annualised stock. |
| L58 | Senior Software Engineer | Fidelity Principal Software Engineer entry, LPL Financial Senior Engineer | Schwab publishes no level crosswalk; scope-based orientation only.Levels.fyi median with a 10.8 percent observed bonus-to-base and about $4,000 of annualised stock. |
| L59 | Lead Software Engineer | Fidelity Principal Engineer, Interactive Brokers Lead Developer, Google L5 | Schwab publishes no level crosswalk; scope-based orientation only.Levels.fyi median with a 13.5 percent observed bonus-to-base and about $5,000 of annualised stock. |
| L60 | Principal Software Engineer | Fidelity Distinguished Engineer entry, Google L6, Morgan Stanley Executive Director | The L61 Distinguished Engineer label is visible in public data but carries no disclosed pay, so it is not shown as a band.Levels.fyi median with a 19.6 percent observed bonus-to-base and about $27,000 of annualised stock, the first level where equity is material. |
| Assoc | Associate / Service Professional / Analyst | Fidelity Customer Relationship Advocate, Vanguard Client Relationship Associate | The band spans high-volume service roles in the mid-$50,000s and credentialed advice roles above $100,000, so the median hides a wide spread.Public job postings with a $39,300 to $113,000 posted base range; the upper bound is the Associate Wealth Advisor family. |
| Spec | Specialist / Relationship Specialist | Fidelity Financial Representative, LPL Financial Service Specialist | Incentive opportunity varies far more by role family than by band label.Public job postings with a $56,000 to $85,000 posted base range. |
| SrSpec | Senior Specialist / Senior Auditor | Fidelity Senior Analyst, Raymond James Senior Specialist | This row overlaps the technical ladder around L57 and L58, so the same person can be described either way in postings.Public postings with a $51,300 to $135,000 posted base range plus the technical overlap; about $2,000 of annualised stock is observed. |
| Mgr | Manager / Engineering Manager / Branch Manager | Fidelity Branch Manager, Vanguard Team Manager, Morgan Stanley Vice President | Branch managers carry a materially larger incentive than a control or operations manager on the same nominal band.Public postings from $83,400 to $174,800 base with a Levels.fyi observed 11.7 percent bonus-to-base median; the row uses the blended $155,000 total median. |
| SrMgr | Senior Manager / Senior Wealth Advisor | Fidelity Senior Wealth Planner, Raymond James Branch Complex Manager | The observed total median is lifted by production-linked wealth-advice incentives, so the implied variable share is far above the 10 to 25 percent seen on management-track submissions.Public postings from $91,800 to $201,600 base and a $120,000 to $320,000 total envelope; the $231,000 median total is reconciled by treating the residual as production incentive. |
| Dir | Director / Principal Architect / Function Director | Fidelity Director, LPL Financial Senior Vice President, Morgan Stanley Executive Director | Schwab uses Vice President as a client-channel prefix, so a peer VP title does not map onto this row.Public postings from $121,400 to $269,900 base with an analytical $150,000 to $400,000 total envelope; about $10,000 of annualised stock is observed. |
| MD | Managing Director / Business or Function Head | Fidelity Head of Function, Raymond James Managing Director, Goldman Sachs Managing Director | Managing Director is the recurrent senior function-leader title at Schwab and covers a very wide scope range, from a single function to a named executive officer role.Public postings from $225,000 to $375,000 base with a $280,000 to $650,000 total envelope and a Levels.fyi observed 22.3 percent bonus-to-base median. |
Critical evidence warning
Charles Schwab publishes no salary bands, no midpoints and no geographic differential policy for ordinary employees. Every non-executive figure on this page is a public job posting, an employee submission or a model calibrated on one, and the United States city factors are analytical normalisations rather than a Schwab pay-zone table. Many Schwab postings state a market-specific range, so an individual posting always overrides a modelled cell. India figures are launch-stage market estimates for a centre that opened in August 2026 and has almost no direct salary evidence yet.

Global Footprint & Pay Arbitrage
Schwab reported 33,700 employees in mid-2026 against a 2024 pay-ratio population of 32,214 that contained only 39 non-US employees. Westlake is the pay anchor, thirteen further United States markets are normalised against it, and Hyderabad is the first material offshore market in the company's history.

Schwab publishes no city-level headcount. The strongest geographic signal in public data is the cumulative visa filing count by worksite, which puts Roanoke, Texas at 1,112 filings, Austin at 559 and Westlake at 445, and the disclosure that the Sydney office closed in September 2019 with the Australian entity's business number cancelled in September 2020.

- The Westlake column is the anchor at 1.00. Austin submissions sit close enough to the national medians that it is also carried at 1.00 rather than given a manufactured differential.
- Technical rows come from Levels.fyi software-engineering medians for L54 through L60; corporate rows come from posted base ranges on Schwab's own jobs site blended with Levels.fyi manager-track submissions.
- The Senior Manager row is the least well behaved in the dataset: a $160,000 posted base median sits under a $231,000 observed total median because the Senior Wealth Advisor family carries production-linked incentive. The row reconciles that residual as bonus rather than discarding either observation.
- Hyderabad total compensation runs at roughly 14 percent of the Westlake anchor at the most junior bands and about 62 percent at Managing Director scope, and base compresses less than total because United States packages carry more variable pay.
- Named executive officer and chief executive pay is excluded from the band table entirely. Those are single global figures from the proxy and would force every city factor toward 1.00 at the top of the ladder if they were interpolated.
Model rules
- Every modelled cell is the Westlake median multiplied by the city base or total factor and then by the 26 August 2026 foreign-exchange snapshot.
- United States factors are analytical normalisations against national medians, not a published Schwab geographic differential. Schwab states market-specific ranges in many individual postings, and the posting always governs.
- Hyderabad carries separate base and total factors and separate junior and senior factors, because the India-to-United States ratio widens sharply with scope in the underlying market benchmarks.
- A total compensation cell is base plus target variable plus the observed annualised stock component. Sign-on payments, relocation, retention awards and the employer cost of benefits are excluded, so this is pay rather than total reward.
- London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney and Toronto are deliberately absent from the location table. The 2024 proxy records nine, sixteen and thirteen employees respectively in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Singapore, and no defensible pay evidence exists for any of them.
Variable Pay & Annual Cash Incentive
Schwab discloses the executive plan in detail and publishes nothing about the employee bonus grid. The band targets below are the observed bonus-to-base medians in public submissions and postings, not company targets, and the client-facing mechanics come from Schwab's own Investment Professionals' Compensation disclosure.

Employee payout timing and history
The 116.5 percent figure is executive plan funding and should not be read as a companywide payout. Other role pools use different funding measures and manager discretion, and companywide employee payout percentages for 2023 through 2025 are not publicly disclosed.
Sales and special incentives
Schwab publishes an unusually detailed client-facing incentive disclosure because it is required to explain how advice-giving staff are paid. Customer service and brokerage representatives earn a quarterly customer-satisfaction bonus and a quarterly converted-referral bonus on top of an annual company-funded bonus. Investment consultants are paid annually with a manager-discretion component on retail net new assets, service quality, satisfaction, teamwork and education. Trading consultants are paid monthly plus a quarterly discretionary amount. Financial and wealth consultants are production-dependent. Across all of them net new assets sit alongside service, satisfaction, retention, risk and quality measures rather than being the only driver, and Schwab states that it avoids some product-specific differential compensation.
Equity — RSUs, PSUs, Options & ESPP
Broad employee ownership at Schwab runs through a discounted share purchase plan rather than a universal grant. Restricted stock units and options exist under the 2022 Stock Incentive Plan but are discretionary and concentrate at senior and critical-skill levels, and no minimum band threshold for a grant is published anywhere.
- Total future availability across stockholder-approved plans was 122,428,590 shares at 31 December 2025, split 101,721,673 under the 2022 plan and 20,706,917 under the purchase plan.
- Outstanding awards represented 15.47 percent of outstanding plus future available shares. That is a derived capacity ratio calculated for this report and not an issuer-reported utilisation metric.
- Options remain a live instrument at Schwab in a way they are not at most large United States issuers: 13,305,141 options were outstanding at a weighted-average exercise price of $57.77, well below the $112.27 share price on 25 August 2026.
- There is no publicly disclosed minimum level at which an employee becomes eligible for a restricted stock unit or option grant, so the observed annualised stock values by level are evidence of practice rather than of policy.

Vesting — common reported employee schedule
The four-year 25 percent annual pattern for employee restricted stock units comes from observed award agreements and employee submissions rather than a published universal schedule, and the individual grant agreement controls. Executive options and performance units are the only schedules Schwab actually discloses.
Eligibility by hierarchy level
- Employee submissions record no material annual stock component at L54, L55 or L56, small amounts of roughly $2,000 to $5,000 from L57 through L59 and Senior Specialist through Senior Manager, and about $27,000 at L60.
- At $112.27 per share on 25 August 2026, the observed annualised values equate to roughly 2 shares at L54, 27 at L57, 45 at L59 and 241 at L60. Those are analytical share equivalents of an observed value, not disclosed grant counts.
- Grants are described as driven by critical skill, retention, promotion, hiring and leadership scope, so two people on the same band can reasonably receive very different awards.
- The India benefits page does not currently advertise the employee stock purchase plan or any local equity plan, so Hyderabad equity eligibility is not publicly disclosed and should not be assumed from United States practice.
- Charles R. Schwab is excluded from the employee stock purchase plan because he holds more than 5 percent of the company, a rare instance of a founder being barred from the broad employee plan he oversees.

Named executive target equity
| Executive | Target | Units / structure |
|---|---|---|
Richard A. Wurster President and Chief Executive Officer | $12.7M total long-term incentive | $7.6M of performance units and $5.1M of options, a 60/40 split |
Charles R. Schwab Co-Chairman | $5.0M total long-term incentive | $3.0M of performance units and $2.0M of options, a 60/40 split |
Michael D. Verdeschi Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer | $4.3M total long-term incentive | $2.6M of performance units and $1.7M of options, a 60/40 split |
Jonathan M. Craig Managing Director, Head of Investor Services | $3.5M total long-term incentive | $2.1M of performance units and $1.4M of options, a 60/40 split |

Executive Compensation
2025 Summary Compensation Table values from the 2026 proxy statement filed 6 April 2026. Stock and option awards are combined here and are grant-date accounting values rather than cash received; the performance-unit half only pays if return on tangible common equity clears its hurdle over three years.
Reading the package
Salary is about 6.7 percent of Wurster's reported total, the cash incentive about 25.2 percent and equity about 67.6 percent. That is a less equity-heavy mix than a large-cap technology chief executive, and the cash incentive is unusually large in relative terms because the target is 325 percent of salary. Within the equity half, 60 percent is performance-based and pays nothing unless the three-year return on tangible common equity test is met, while the option half only has value if the share price rises above the grant-date price.
The comparison is directional rather than exact. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley figures are annual compensation decisions rather than Summary Compensation Table totals, fiscal years differ, and special retention awards can distort any one year. What the ranking does show is that Schwab pays its chief executive well below the two investment banks and in line with the wealth and platform peers it actually competes with for advisers and technologists.
Named Executive Officers & Board
Schwab runs an unusual governance shape: a chief executive alongside two co-chairmen, one of whom is the founder and the other the immediately preceding chief executive, with both still receiving full named-executive compensation.
Walter W. Bettinger II handed the chief executive role to Richard Wurster and remains a co-chairman with a $6.26 million 2025 package, while founder Charles R. Schwab remains a co-chairman with an $8.54 million package that is larger than the sitting chief financial officer's. Both continue to receive annual performance units and options on the same 60/40 structure as the operating executives. This means Schwab discloses three people at or above co-chair level rather than one, and the total disclosed named-executive cost is spread across a wider leadership group than at a typical peer.
Board compensation framework
| Element | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Annual cash retainer | $100,000 in 2025, $110,000 for 2026 | Directors may defer the retainer into options or restricted stock units under Plan II. |
| Annual equity award | $215,000 in 2025, $240,000 for 2026 | Split 60 percent restricted stock units and 40 percent options, mirroring the executive mix. |
| Committee chair retainer | $50,000 in 2025 | Committee-specific for 2026; the proxy sets each amount separately. |
| Committee member retainer | $15,000 to $20,000 in 2025 | Committee-specific for 2026. |
| Meeting fees | None | Schwab pays no per-meeting fee, so workload is priced entirely through retainers. |
| Equity vesting | 25% / 25% / 50% over three anniversaries | Back-loaded relative to a typical annual-meeting cliff, which lengthens the retention hook. |
Total 2025 independent director packages ran roughly $315,000 to $430,000 depending on committee load, on a $100,000 cash retainer plus $215,000 of equity plus committee retainers. The 2026 policy lifts the base package to $350,000 before committee work. Employee directors, including the co-chairmen, receive no separate director pay.
Regional heads and other officers
Executive Council members who are not named executive officers have no compensation table at all. Dennis Howard, the Chief Technology, Operations and Data Officer, is visible only through Form 4 share movements, and the January 2026 leadership transitions across the bank, audit, wealth and technology, operations and data functions changed senior role scope without any individual package being disclosed. Compensation for regional or country leadership outside the named executive group is not publicly disclosed anywhere.
Insider Trades — SEC Forms 3/4/5
Schwab is a United States issuer, so the governing record is SEC Forms 3, 4 and 5 rather than any Indian exchange filing. Indian promoter-group and SEBI substantial-acquisition reporting is not applicable. A withholding line is shares surrendered to cover tax on a vesting event rather than a decision to sell.

Benefits & Perks
United States benefits are better evidenced than United States pay, because the retirement plan files an annual Form 11-K with exact match formulas. India benefits are described qualitatively on the Hyderabad careers page with no amounts attached, which is normal for a centre that opened in August 2026.
United States
- Retirement — 401(k) available on the hire date with automatic enrolment at 6 percent. Employees may contribute up to 50 percent of eligible compensation subject to IRS limits, and Roth and after-tax contributions are permitted. Automatic savings escalation adds one percentage point a year until the deferral reaches 15 percent, with opt-out available. [official]
- Retirement — Basic Match of $250 plus a 100 percent match up to 5 percent of pay. The $250 lands on the first dollar contributed, which makes even a token deferral worth taking. Employee contributions, rollovers and the Basic Match are immediately vested; any discretionary profit contribution would vest 0, 25, 50 and 100 percent through year four, and no profit contribution was made for 2025. [official]
- Ownership — Employee stock purchase plan at a 15 percent discount. Payroll deductions of up to 10 percent of pay buy shares at the end of six-month periods beginning 1 February and 1 August. Charles R. Schwab is excluded because he owns more than 5 percent of the company. [official]
- Time — 28-day sabbatical after every five years of service. An unusually concrete benefit for a financial-services employer and one of the few time-off terms Schwab quantifies publicly. Eligibility exclusions are not published. [official]
- Medical — Medical, dental and vision cover as part of the United States suite. Carrier, employer premium share, deductibles and plan-specific coverage are not disclosed in any public source, so the value of this element cannot be quantified from outside. [official]
- Protection — Life and disability insurance. Referenced in careers materials; coverage multiples and carrier are not disclosed. [official]
- Family — Parental leave, family-building support and education assistance. All three are referenced in careers materials, but the exact weeks of leave and the reimbursement caps are not published. [npd]
- Working model — Hybrid and role-dependent working. Publicly referenced as the model, with team-specific attendance rules that are not published. [official]
Global programs
- Review cycle — Annual merit increases. Schwab's 2026 quarterly disclosures attribute part of higher compensation expense to annual merit increases, which supports an annual cycle. The launch month, rating-finalisation date, increase effective date and any off-cycle correction policy are not disclosed for any country. [official]
- Executive cycle — January certification. Executive annual incentive outcomes for 2025 were certified in January 2026 alongside the 2023 performance-unit outcome, so the executive calendar is the one part of the review cycle that is dated publicly. [official]
- Retirement plan scale — $10.726 billion of SchwabPlan assets. Disclosed in the 2025 Form 11-K, which is why the United States retirement terms are the most precisely evidenced part of the whole package. [official]
Benefit fields not publicly quantified
Schwab-specific pension rates, health cover, leave schedules and other country benefits are not publicly disclosed for the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Singapore, where the 2024 pay-ratio population recorded nine, sixteen and thirteen employees respectively. Australia has no verified current material payroll: the Sydney office closed in September 2019 and the Australian entity's business number was cancelled in September 2020, so statutory Australian entitlements are not presented as Schwab benefits even though Australian residents can still open international accounts. Canada has no verified major employee hub.
Performance Review & Pay Progression
Schwab publishes no company-wide rating scale, no distribution rule and no merit matrix. The only dated element of the review calendar that is public is the executive cycle, where the committee sets targets annually and certifies outcomes after year-end with a risk review.

The one dated anchor in the calendar is executive: 2025 incentive funding and the 2023 performance-unit outcome were both certified in January 2026. For everyone else, the 2026 expense commentary confirms that annual merit increases happen without saying when. The employee stock purchase plan gives a second fixed rhythm, with purchase periods beginning 1 February and 1 August each year, which is worth aligning contribution changes to.
Pay progression evidence
Modelled progression, not Schwab policy: L54 to L55 typically takes 1 to 3 years for an 8 to 15 percent increase; L55 to L56 takes 2 to 3 years for 10 to 18 percent; L56 to L57 takes 2 to 4 years for 12 to 20 percent; L57 to L58 takes 1 to 3 years for 5 to 15 percent because title calibration varies; L58 to L59 takes 2 to 4 years for 10 to 20 percent; L59 to L60 takes 3 to 6 years for 15 to 30 percent with a much larger scope and equity step. On the corporate ladder, Manager to Senior Manager takes 2 to 5 years for 12 to 25 percent, Senior Manager to Director takes 3 to 6 years for 15 to 30 percent, and Director to Managing Director takes 4 to 8 years for 20 to 40 percent or more, where the role change is usually decisive rather than the band step. These are market heuristics included because official data is absent, and they should never be used to predict an individual review outcome.
H-1B / LCA Visa Footprint — United States
Schwab is a steady rather than heavy H-1B sponsor, concentrated in software development, quality engineering, data, security and specialised management roles in Texas and Colorado. Labour condition application wages are base salary only, so they exclude bonus and any equity and should never be read against a total compensation figure.
Dataset summary
| Dataset | Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| MyVisaJobs employer profile | 585 FY2025 applications with a $154,974 average offered salary | Full-year aggregation covering FY2023 to FY2026 with petition approval and denial counts. |
| H1BGrader salary percentiles | FY2026 median $158,520, 75th percentile $174,617, 90th percentile $195,346 | The 25th percentile is not retained in the public extract and has deliberately not been back-solved. |
| Ellis visa sponsor summary | 535 FY2025 applications with a $150,000 median | Differs from MyVisaJobs because of entity-name matching, the labour condition application versus petition dataset, amendment counting and fiscal-year cutoffs. |
| FY2026 partial-year filings | 357 applications and 182 petitions with 180 approved | An approval rate of 98.90 percent; cutoffs differ between the application and petition datasets. |

Austin, TX Technology hub; second-largest cumulative filing location | $110K | $125,000 | $138K | 559 |
Lone Tree, CO Denver-area campus; historical public aggregation | $106K | $120,000 | $132K | 169 |
All-years aggregates. P25/P75 are rounded reconstruction values marked modeled; medians and record counts are the stronger fields.
Selected title / worksite records
| Title | Worksite | Proffered wage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| FY2026 median certified filing | All Schwab worksites | $158,520 | Partial-year H1BGrader aggregation; the strongest single wage point in the record. |
| FY2026 alternative partial-year median | All Schwab worksites | $159,650 | Drawn from 189 certified applications in a separate extract with a different cutoff and entity match. |
| FY2026 75th percentile | All Schwab worksites | $174,617 | Roughly the level of an L59 Lead Software Engineer base at the Westlake anchor. |
| FY2026 90th percentile | All Schwab worksites | $195,346 | Below the $217,085 L60 anchor base, which is consistent with visa filings under-representing the very top of the ladder. |
| Observed range in one partial extract | All Schwab worksites | $142,200 to $175,000 | A source-specific subset rather than a companywide minimum and maximum. |
| FY2025 average offered salary | All Schwab worksites | $154,974 | Against $149,128 in FY2024 and $146,107 in FY2023, a rise of about 6 percent over two years. |
Reading the data correctly
- City 25th and 75th percentiles are reconstructions at 0.88 and 1.10 times each observed median, using the national FY2026 median-to-75th-percentile ratio. Only the medians and the record counts are source figures.
- Roanoke, Texas carries the largest cumulative filing count at 1,112 and Phoenix carries 92, but neither median was retained in the public extract, so neither city is shown with a wage.
- MyVisaJobs, H1BGrader and Ellis disagree because they match entity names differently, use labour condition application versus petition datasets, count amendments differently and cut fiscal years at different points. The numbers here are kept source-labelled rather than forced into a false reconciliation.
- Filings concentrate in software development, quality engineering, data, security and specialised management roles, so they should be compared with the technical bands rather than with customer-service or branch-associate pay.
- A labour condition application wage is the offered base salary at the time of filing. It excludes the annual bonus, any restricted stock unit or option grant and the employee stock purchase plan discount.
Key Nuances & Insights
Schwab uses Vice President in branch manager, investment consultant, retirement sales and advice titles, where it signals client-facing seniority rather than a grade. It can sit beside Director rather than above it. Anyone benchmarking a Schwab VP against a Morgan Stanley or Goldman Sachs VP is comparing two different things, and the reliable senior employee title at Schwab is Managing Director.
The 15 percent discount purchase plan is genuinely broad for eligible United States employees, but restricted stock units and options are discretionary and uneven. Employee submissions show no material annual stock at L54 through L56 and about $27,000 only at L60. Treating Schwab like a technology employer where everyone gets a refresh will overstate an offer badly.
Forty percent of named executive long-term incentive is stock options, which most large United States issuers abandoned years ago. 13,305,141 options were outstanding at a $57.77 weighted-average exercise price at the end of 2025 against a $112.27 share price in August 2026. That gearing is why Craig's August 2026 exercise at $46.81 produced a roughly $1.4 million gross spread on a single transaction.
Charles R. Schwab is excluded from the employee stock purchase plan because he owns more than 5 percent of the company. It is a small detail with a large implication: the plan's terms are set by a board on which the largest individual shareholder cannot personally benefit from the discount.
Founder Charles R. Schwab and former chief executive Walter W. Bettinger II both remain named executive officers with full 2025 packages of $8.54 million and $6.26 million. Schwab's co-chairman package is larger than the sitting chief financial officer's, so the disclosed leadership cost is spread across more people than at a typical peer.
Wurster's only 2026 open-market transaction was a purchase of 21,959 shares at $84.23 in May, taking his direct holding to 218,409 shares. Every other significant 2026 disposition in the record came from founder-family vehicles or from plan-based executive sales, so the insider picture reads very differently depending on which line you look at.
Schwab's own advice-compensation disclosure sets out net new assets alongside service quality, client satisfaction, retention, risk management, quality assurance and team contribution, and states that it avoids some product-specific differential compensation. Branch manager bonus runs around 45 percent of total compensation, which is far above anything on the technology ladder.
The Associate row alone spans posted base pay from $39,300 to $113,000, because a high-volume service professional and a credentialed Associate Wealth Advisor share a band label. Inside Senior Manager the same effect lifts the observed total median to $231,000 against a $160,000 base median. Negotiating on the band name rather than the role family will leave money on the table.
The 2024 pay-ratio population recorded 39 non-US employees out of 32,214. The Hyderabad centre opened on 19 August 2026 targeting about 500 first-year hires and about 2,000 by the end of 2027. Any profile that says Schwab has no India footprint is already obsolete, and the CEO pay ratio denominator will move as the mix changes.
Schwab is bringing contractor work in-house at the new centre. Launch offers can be shaped by incumbent contractor pay, retention needs and skill scarcity rather than by a settled internal band, so early Hyderabad packages at the same title may vary more than they would at a mature site. This is an inference from the operating model, not a disclosed pay policy.
The Hyderabad benefits page lists provident fund, gratuity, medical, insurance, wellness, creche, transport and meals, and does not mention the employee stock purchase plan or any local equity scheme. Assuming United States plan participation for an India offer is the single easiest way to overvalue it.
Omaha remains a meaningful hub and 37,815 assumed restricted stock units were still outstanding at 31 December 2025, but no new grants may be made under that plan and no public pre-merger and post-merger grade crosswalk exists. Title harmonisation across the two heritages is not publicly disclosed.
Australian residents can still open international brokerage accounts, but the Sydney office closed in September 2019 and the Australian entity's business number was cancelled in September 2020. Attributing Australian statutory entitlements to Schwab as an employer would be wrong.
The figure is executive bonus plan funding certified in January 2026 on adjusted diluted earnings per share of $4.87 against a $4.18 target. Other role pools use different funding measures and manager discretion, and companywide employee payout percentages for 2023 through 2025 are not disclosed anywhere.
Research control
On disclosed chief executive pay Schwab sits well below the investment banks and close to the wealth and platform firms it actually competes with: $18.755 million against $47.0 million at Goldman Sachs and $45.0 million at Morgan Stanley, but above $17.278 million at Raymond James and $14.574 million at LPL Financial. Further down the ladder the same shape holds. Schwab technology pay is competitive with Fidelity and Capital One in the same metros but is not a Bay Area technology package, and the equity component is the reason: a Schwab L58 sees roughly $4,000 of annualised stock where a comparable technology-company level would see a five-figure refresh. What Schwab offers instead is a very concrete retirement match, a 28-day sabbatical every five years and a purchase plan that carries no vesting risk.
Evidence classification
| Label | Meaning | Examples and permitted use |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | A Schwab filing, official benefit page, government rule or official job posting. | May be stated as fact with a date and a source. Covers the executive tables, the equity pools, the retirement match and the posted base ranges. |
| Reported | Employee-submitted pay, a labour condition application wage or a third-party salary record. | Used as market evidence with sample and scope caveats. Covers the entire L54 to L60 ladder and the manager-track bonus percentages. |
| Modeled | The Westlake anchor multiplied by a city calibration factor and the foreign-exchange snapshot. | A planning envelope for orientation, never a Schwab pay band. Covers every non-Westlake cell and all Hyderabad figures. |
| Not publicly disclosed | No defensible public evidence exists. | Stated as such rather than filled with an estimate. |
Explicit “Not publicly disclosed” index
Known gaps and diligence before relying on a cell
- 1The named executive officer and chief executive rows are deliberately excluded from the band table and carried in the executive section only. They are single global figures that are identical in every city, and interpolating them would force every location factor toward 1.00 at the top of the ladder and produce absurd offshore cells. The employee ladder therefore ends at Managing Director.
- 2The L61 Distinguished Engineer level is real but has no disclosed pay at all, so it appears in the hierarchy commentary without a band row.
- 3The Senior Manager row is the one place where the sources do not reconcile. A $160,000 posted base median sits under a $231,000 observed total median because the Senior Wealth Advisor family carries production-linked incentive. Both figures are kept and the residual is treated as bonus, which makes the implied variable share far higher than the 10 to 25 percent seen on management-track submissions.
- 4United States city factors are analytical normalisations against national medians rather than a published Schwab geographic differential. Many Schwab postings state a market-specific range, and the posting always governs.
- 5Hyderabad factors are built from launch-stage market benchmarks rather than Schwab observations. The India Managing Director benchmark in the source runs above the United States Managing Director total, which is a general capability-centre leadership benchmark rather than a Schwab figure, so the top-of-ladder India factor is capped below it at 0.62 of the anchor total.
- 6Bangalore appears in the source bundle only as an explicit no-office state and is deliberately absent from the location table. Hyderabad is the only India market with any evidence.
- 7London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney and Toronto are excluded from the location table because no defensible pay evidence exists for any of them. The 2024 proxy records nine, sixteen and thirteen employees in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Singapore respectively.
- 8Total compensation is base plus variable plus the observed annualised stock component. No employer benefit load is added, so these are pay figures rather than an employer cost of total reward.
- 9Named executive incentive targets in dollars are derived by dividing each disclosed payout by the 116.5 percent funding factor, because the proxy discloses a group target range rather than a dollar target per officer.
- 10City-level H-1B 25th and 75th percentiles are reconstructions rather than source figures, and Roanoke and Phoenix are shown only by filing count because no median was retained.

Recent News & Workforce Trend
Schwab's 2026 compensation story is a geographic one. The Hyderabad centre opened in August 2026 and creates the company's first material non-US pay market, against a workforce that recorded 39 non-US employees as recently as the end of 2024.
Schwab moved from a cutting cycle to a hiring cycle inside three years, and the composition of the growth is what matters for pay. The 2023 to 2024 restructuring removed about 2,000 roles as part of a programme targeting at least $500 million of annualised savings, with no companywide pay cut disclosed. The recovery to 33,700 by mid-2026 came alongside branch and technology hiring, and the next tranche of growth is offshore for the first time. No standardised attrition rate is published, so the trend cannot be decomposed into hiring and leaving.
About 500 first-year hires with a target of about 2,000 by the end of 2027, covering technology, engineering and operations. It creates Schwab's first material India compensation market and brings contractor work in-house.
Jonathan Craig exercised 21,866 options and sold the same day at $111.03 under a 10b5-1 plan, a gross pre-tax spread of about $1.4 million that illustrates the value carried in Schwab's outstanding option book.
