How Cadence Design Systems Pays
Cadence's analytical E1 to E7 technical ladder and its manager and director rows priced across 26 markets, alongside Omnibus RSUs and PSUs and a 15 percent discount ESPP with a six-month lookback, a $56.68M CEO package at 592:1, and 282 FY2025 H-1B filings at a $132,683 median wage.
Band Hierarchy
Cadence publishes no company-wide numeric salary grade taxonomy. The E1 to E7 technical rows and the manager and director rows are analytical navigation labels derived from observed public titles, employee salary submissions and one employer-posted requisition range. Only the Vice President, Senior Vice President, General Manager, Chief Executive Officer and board tiers are titles Cadence itself discloses, and only the named executives among them carry a pay disclosure.

Hierarchy qualifications and legacy structures
- Cadence exposes titles and requisitions but never a global numeric grade system, so the E and M labels here must not be quoted back as internal codes in a negotiation.
- The one legacy structure that is publicly traceable concerns equity plans, not salary grades: the 1997 plan merged into the 2000 plan, the 2000 plan consolidated into the 1987 plan, and the 1987 plan was restated as the Omnibus Plan in 2014.
- The crosswalk is most reliable for software and design engineering, where public records name the exact title. It degrades for application engineering, sales, marketing and corporate functions, where Cadence can place equivalent scope very differently.
- Distinguished Engineer, Cadence Fellow and Chief Architect sit above E7 on the technical ladder, and the bundle carries no pay evidence for them. Extrapolating from the E7 numbers is explicitly warned against in the source research.
- Corporate Vice President and Vice President exist as real layers between director and the named executive tier, but no public source discloses standardised pay for either, so neither appears as a band row here.
- The February 2026 Hexagon Design and Engineering acquisition added a substantial engineering workforce whose grade and pay harmonisation framework has not been published, so acquired-population titles may not map onto this ladder at all.
Peer-level mapping
| Band | Archetype | Peer mapping | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| E1 | Software Engineer I | Synopsys entry engineer, Keysight R&D Engineer I, Google L3 | Functional orientation only. Cadence publishes no grade codes and no crosswalk to any peer ladder.United States employee-reported medians; the observed bonus is 8.3 percent of base and the stock component is an annualised value, not a grant face value. |
| E2 | Software Engineer II | Synopsys mid-level engineer, Keysight R&D Engineer II, Google L4 | Functional orientation only. The same title spans very different scope across electronic design automation vendors.United States employee-reported medians; observed bonus 7.8 percent of base. This is the only level with a matching United Kingdom and Taiwan observation. |
| E3 | Lead Software Engineer | Senior or lead engineer at electronic design automation and semiconductor peers | Lead at Cadence is a technical scope marker, not a people-management step. Do not read it as a manager grade.United States employee-reported medians; observed bonus 8.7 percent of base. The stock component more than doubles against E2. |
| E4 | Principal Software Engineer | Staff or principal engineer at large semiconductor software vendors | Closest to staff and principal engineering at peers, but no source supports a deterministic mapping to a peer code.United States employee-reported medians; observed bonus 7.4 percent of base. Indeed's separate estimate for the same title is $163,876, so treat the base as a sampled point. |
| E5 | Senior Principal Engineer | Senior staff or senior principal engineer at peers | Scope-based orientation only. Progression from E4 is performance and scope dependent rather than time served.United States employee-reported medians; observed bonus 10.6 percent of base, the first clear step up in the cash variable ratio. |
| E6 | Software Architect | Architect or principal architect at electronic design automation peers | Architect spans principal architect through the precursor to the distinguished track, so a single peer code does not fit.United States employee-reported medians; observed bonus 11.7 percent of base. Annualised stock jumps to $68,000, more than double E5. |
| E7 | Senior Software Architect | Senior architect at semiconductor and electronic design automation peers | The sample behind this row is small. Cadence's Distinguished Engineer and Fellow titles sit above it with no published pay evidence at all.United States employee-reported medians; observed bonus 19.6 percent of base, roughly double the ratio seen at E1 through E4. |
| M1 | Software Engineering Manager | Engineering manager at electronic design automation and semiconductor peers | A manager is not automatically senior to a principal or architect. The two ladders diverge in scope rather than stacking. The $278,000 total is a United States employee-reported manager point. Cadence publishes no component split for it, so the base, bonus and stock shown here are modelled on the adjacent E5 mix. |
| M2 | Director | Director at electronic design automation, semiconductor and enterprise software peers | Director is a title, not a disclosed grade. Two Cadence directors can sit on very different pay because the requisition range spans $178,500 to $331,500.The base is the midpoint of Cadence's own California Director, System Engineering and Integration requisition range of $178,500 to $331,500. Bonus and stock are modelled; Indeed's separate director estimate is $209,050. |
Critical evidence warning
Cadence Design Systems does not publish salary ranges, band minimums or midpoints for any employee population, and the E and M labels used here are analytical rather than official. Every non-executive figure is a third-party observation, an employer-posted requisition range or a calibrated model around one, and should be used for orientation rather than quoted as a Cadence pay band.

Global Footprint & Pay Arbitrage
Cadence reported about 13,800 employees at 31 December 2025 and publishes no headcount by country or city. San Jose is the pay anchor. India carries the second-strongest public evidence, the United Kingdom, Canada and Taiwan carry sparse level points, and Australia rests on two salary submissions.

Cadence's public office directory also lists sites this table does not price, because the bundle found no compensation evidence for them at all: Munich and Feldkirchen, Paris, Sophia Antipolis and Grenoble, Milan, Barcelona, Dublin and Cork, Warsaw, Leuven, Prague, Stockholm, Tel Aviv and Petah Tikva, Shanghai, Beijing and Nanjing, Tokyo and Yokohama, Seoul, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur and Penang. They are real offices with no public pay table, and inventing a factor for them would be a fabrication rather than a model.
San Jose anchor medians — the basis of every modeled cell
| Band | Base | Stock | Bonus | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E1 | $121K | $3K | $10K | $134K |
| E2 | $142K | $5K | $11K | $159K |
| E3 | $157K | $13K | $14K | $184K |
| E4 | $177K | $26K | $13K | $217K |
| E5 | $201K | $29K | $21K | $251K |
| E6 | $212K | $68K | $25K | $305K |
| E7 | $265K | $74K | $52K | $391K |
- San Jose is the anchor column. The E1 through E7 medians are United States-wide employee-reported software engineering records rather than San Jose-only figures, because Cadence's public pay evidence is nationwide.
- Only two United States cities carry an independent wage aggregate: Austin at a $139,630 visa median and Burlington at $151,226, against $154,359 for San Jose. Those ratios set the Austin and Chelmsford factors; every other United States city is held at the nationwide proxy because no city differential is public.
- India total compensation runs at roughly 13 percent of the anchor at Software Engineer I and rises towards 47 percent at Software Architect. The multiple falls from about 7.8 times at entry to about 2.1 times at architect, driven almost entirely by the Indian equity component.
- The Noida and Greater Noida sample is the only city-level Indian evidence: Software Engineer I total at 1,660,637 rupees and a highest reported Senior Principal package of 8,335,314 rupees. Both sit within about 2 percent of the India-wide figures, so no separate Noida factor is warranted.
- Taiwan is calibrated on three matched levels, Canada on two and the United Kingdom on two. Sydney rests on two Glassdoor submissions mapped analytically to the Principal cohort, which is the weakest evidence in the table.
- Executive rows are deliberately absent from the band table. The chief executive and named executive figures are single global proxy disclosures, and interpolating city factors through them would put an Indian or Taiwanese cell on a United States executive base.
Model rules
- Every modeled cell is the San Jose anchor median multiplied by the location base or total factor and then by the 25 to 26 August 2026 foreign exchange snapshot.
- India, Canada and Taiwan carry separate junior and senior factors because geographic compression is strongly level-dependent. The factors interpolate linearly by seniority between the most junior and most senior band.
- The United Kingdom and Australia carry flat factors. The two observed United Kingdom levels sit within half a percentage point of each other on base, so no top factor is asserted.
- A total compensation cell is base plus semi-annual bonus plus annualised stock. No notional employer benefit load, provident fund contribution or superannuation guarantee is added, because those are employer cost rather than pay.
- Foreign exchange uses one snapshot for the whole report rather than a rate per market, so cross-market comparisons move together rather than drifting apart.
- Where a market has no direct observation at a level, the cell is a planning envelope and should be treated as an orientation rather than a benchmark.
Variable Pay & Annual Cash Incentive
Cadence confirms a semi-annual employee bonus program and discloses the executive formula in full, but publishes nothing about the employee target grid. The band targets below are the observed bonus-to-base ratios in public salary submissions, not company targets.
| Band | Target | Mechanism | Recent payout |
|---|---|---|---|
E1 Software Engineer I | 8.3% of base observed | Semi-annual bonus program; the level-specific target and mechanics are not published. | Not publicly disclosed |
E2 Software Engineer II | 7.8% of base observed | Semi-annual bonus program; the level-specific target and mechanics are not published. | Not publicly disclosed |
E3 Lead Software Engineer | 8.7% of base observed | Semi-annual bonus program; the level-specific target and mechanics are not published. | Not publicly disclosed |
E4 Principal Software Engineer | 7.4% of base observed | Semi-annual bonus program; the observed ratio dips against E3, which is a sampling artefact rather than a policy step. | Not publicly disclosed |
E5 Senior Principal Engineer | 10.6% of base observed | Semi-annual bonus program; the first clear step above the roughly 8 percent junior plateau. | Not publicly disclosed |
E6 Software Architect | 11.7% of base observed | Semi-annual bonus program; ratio matches the Indian architect sample almost exactly. | Not publicly disclosed |
E7 Senior Software Architect | 19.6% of base observed | Semi-annual bonus program; the highest observed non-executive ratio, on a small sample. | Not publicly disclosed |
M1 Software Engineering Manager | 12% of base modeled | Semi-annual bonus program with a team delivery component; no published manager target exists. | Not publicly disclosed |
M2 Director | 20% of base modeled | Semi-annual bonus program with a function delivery component; no published director target exists. | Not publicly disclosed |
Executive incentive targets — percent of salary
Named-executive outcomes
| Executive | Target | Paid | Attainment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anirudh Devgan | $1,200,000 | $1,456,271 | 121.4% of target; halves paid at 120.1% and 122.7% |
| John M. Wall | $600,000 | $769,614 | 128.3% of target |
| Paul Scannell | $525,000 | $672,916 | 128.2% of target |
| Paul Cunningham | $500,000 | $623,903 | 124.8% of target |
| Chin-Chi Teng | $500,000 | $599,346 | 119.9% of target |
Employee payout timing and history
The employee side of the same program is almost entirely dark. Cadence confirms the program is semi-annual, which matters because it means half of a year's variable pay settles mid-year, but publishes no employee target by level, no company factor applied to the employee population and no payout history for the last three years. The only observable signal is the bonus-to-base ratio in salary submissions, which sits near 8 percent through E1 to E4 and rises to 19.6 percent at Senior Architect.
Sales and special incentives
Sales roles may run on-target earnings and commission plans, but no universal schedule is public. Peer-to-peer monetary recognition awards are officially disclosed. Spot bonuses, patent awards, project incentives, deal-closure bonuses, onsite allowances and retention-bonus matrices are all absent from public disclosure.
Equity — RSUs, PSUs, Options & ESPP
Cadence is a United States issuer, so employee equity means Omnibus Plan restricted stock units and performance stock units, legacy options and employee stock purchase plan purchases rather than an Indian-style employee stock ownership plan. The plan is described as broad-based and other employees received nearly twice as many shares as executive officers in FY2025, but no minimum eligible level and no standard non-executive grant matrix is published.
- A simple pre-amendment snapshot ratio of outstanding options plus unvested awards to those instruments plus available Omnibus shares is about 40.3 percent. That is a capacity measure, not an official utilisation rate: it excludes already issued and vested shares, cancellations, award fungibility and everything that happened after 19 February 2026.
- 994,747 options were still outstanding at 31 December 2025 at a $193.12 weighted-average exercise price. Options are a live instrument at Cadence in a way they are not at several software peers, and the FY2025 option expense was $16.101 million.
- 6,154,415 unvested incentive stock awards and restricted stock units were outstanding at 31 December 2025.
- The May 2026 amendment also removed the plan's fixed 2030 term, which extends the runway for future grants beyond the added 5,000,000 shares.
- The precise current pool utilisation is not publicly disclosed, and any figure derived from the February 2026 snapshot is stale by the report date.
Equity plan capacity and grant activity
Vesting — common reported employee schedule
The schedule shown is the disclosed standard executive restricted stock unit pattern: one third at approximately twelve months, then four equal semi-annual instalments across the following two years. Financial performance stock units use a one-year measurement with earned units generally vesting in thirds over three years, relative shareholder-return units run one, two and three-year performance periods, and the chief executive and named executive long-term performance awards carry multi-year shareholder-return hurdles plus continued service. No standard non-executive vesting policy by level is published, though employee reports commonly describe three-year and four-year patterns.
Eligibility by hierarchy level
- Broad-based is an aggregate programme description, not a promise. Cadence discloses no minimum eligible level, no standard grant matrix and no guarantee that any individual employee receives a direct award.
- Reported annualised stock value rises steeply with level in the United States sample: $3,000 at Software Engineer I, $13,073 at Lead, $26,444 at Principal, $68,000 at Architect and $73,889 at Senior Architect.
- Zero equity appears in one Indian and one Canadian entry-level median. A single zero-stock sample is not proof of ineligibility, but it does show that a grant is not automatic at the junior levels outside the United States.
- Distinguished Engineer and Fellow eligibility is plausible but no standard amount is disclosed, and the source research warns explicitly against extrapolating the Senior Architect figure upward.
- Reported annualised stock value is not the face value of a new grant. It reflects overlapping vesting cohorts and share-price movement, so it will diverge from what a new offer letter shows.
- The employee stock purchase plan is the one equity component an employee can size themselves, up to 15 percent of pay and the $25,000 United States statutory cap.

Named executive target equity
| Executive | Target | Units / structure |
|---|---|---|
Anirudh Devgan President and Chief Executive Officer | $54,412,532 of FY2025 stock awards | Annual restricted stock units and performance stock units plus a separately approved multi-year long-term performance award whose entire grant-date value is recognised in one fiscal year. |
John M. Wall Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer | $15,736,804 of FY2025 stock awards | The largest of the named executive equity grants below the chief executive, on the same annual plus long-term performance structure. |
Paul Scannell Senior Vice President, Customer Success Team | $14,491,009 of FY2025 stock awards | Annual restricted stock units and performance stock units plus long-term performance awards. |
Paul Cunningham Senior Vice President and General Manager, System Verification Group | $14,071,174 of FY2025 stock awards | Identical grant-date value to the Digital and Signoff general manager, which points to a group-level equity band. |
Chin-Chi Teng Senior Vice President and General Manager, Digital and Signoff Group | $14,071,174 of FY2025 stock awards | Identical grant-date value to the System Verification general manager for the same fiscal year. |
Executive Compensation
FY2025 Summary Compensation Table values from the 2026 proxy statement. Stock awards are grant-date fair value under SEC accounting rules, not cash realised in 2025, and the chief executive's figure carries the entire value of a multi-year long-term performance award in a single year.
Reading the package
Salary was about 1.4 percent of the chief executive's FY2025 reported total, the cash incentive about 2.6 percent and stock awards about 96 percent. The number is a grant-cycle artefact rather than a raise: the Summary Compensation Table recognises the entire grant-date value of a multi-year long-term performance award in the year of grant, and Cadence presents its own annualised alternative of $36,504,547. Reported totals were $17,341,862 in 2023 and $19,292,503 in 2024, and 2023 and 2024 both carried roughly equal stock and option award values while 2025 carried no option awards at all.
Cadence's reported chief executive total is roughly three times its closest electronic design automation peer, Synopsys, and about twice the next highest in this set. Almost all of that gap is the accounting treatment of one multi-year award rather than a structurally richer package. The pay ratios tell the same story: Cadence at 592:1 against Synopsys at 210:1, Keysight at 210:1, PTC at 270:1 and Autodesk at 203.5:1, even though the Cadence median employee of $95,689 sits within a few thousand dollars of the Synopsys and PTC medians. The figures are not fully comparable across fiscal calendars, workforce geographies or award cycles.
Named Executive Officers & Board
Only the five FY2025 named executive officers carry an individual pay disclosure. Every other leadership role at Cadence is visible by title alone.
The four non-chief-executive named officers cluster tightly, from $15,185,652 to $17,119,862, and the two group general managers received identical $14,071,174 stock grants, which suggests a group-level equity band even though none is published. Base salaries run from $500,000 to $600,000 against the chief executive's $800,000, so the cash spread across the executive tier is narrow and the equity spread is what differentiates. Each named executive received a $10,500 United States 401(k) match in FY2025, which is essentially all of their all-other-compensation line.
Board compensation framework
| Element | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Annual cash retainer | $80,000 | Paid to every non-employee director before any chair or meeting fees. |
| Board Chair additional retainer | $80,000 | Doubles the base cash retainer for the independent chair role. |
| Audit Committee Chair | $40,000 | The highest committee chair fee, reflecting the workload of the audit role. |
| Compensation or Governance Committee Chair | $30,000 | Paid to the chair of either committee. |
| In-person or video meeting fee | $2,000 | Cadence still pays per-meeting fees, which many large-cap boards have dropped. |
| Telephone meeting fee | $1,000 | Half the in-person rate for audio-only attendance. |
| Annual equity target | $240,000 | Three times the cash retainer, so the director package is majority equity. |
| Standard total before chair and meeting fees | $320,000 | The $80,000 retainer plus the $240,000 equity target. |
| Stock ownership guideline | $375,000 | The holding requirement each non-employee director is expected to reach. |
| Legacy medical reimbursement cap | $20,000 | Available only to eligible directors under a grandfathered arrangement. |
The director programme is a governance package, not an employment band, and it is excluded from the band table and the range chart. It is worth reading alongside the employee data for one reason: a non-employee director's $320,000 standard package sits above the observed Software Architect total of $304,972 for a part-time role, which is a useful calibration of how Cadence prices scarce technical talent against board oversight.
Regional heads and other officers
Compensation for the Chief Human Resources Officer, Chief Technology Officer, General Counsel, Company Secretary and the regional Americas, EMEA and APAC heads is not publicly disclosed individually, and will only become visible if one of those roles qualifies as a named executive in a future proxy. Corporate Vice President and Vice President pay is not disclosed at all, individually or as a band.
Insider Trades — SEC Forms 3/4/5
Cadence is a United States-listed issuer, so SEC Forms 3, 4 and 5 are the relevant insider reporting system. No SEBI SAST or promoter-group filing regime applies. Option exercises, grants, mandatory tax withholding and open-market sales have different economic meanings and should never be merged into one insider-selling total.

Benefits & Perks
Cadence's benefit disclosure is thinner than its pay disclosure. The United States picture is genuinely evidenced by filings and the Life at Cadence pages, India and Australia rest largely on statutory baselines, and most other countries have no published Cadence schedule at all. A statutory baseline is not proof of a Cadence enhancement.
United States
- Retirement — 401(k) with an employer match. The match is confirmed in the filings and each FY2025 named executive received exactly $10,500, which is the practical ceiling at the compensation limit. Employee-reported sources describe 50 percent of the first 6 percent, but the current plan document is not public. [official]
- Equity — Employee stock purchase plan at a 15 percent discount. Six-month offerings from 1 February and 1 August, purchase at 85 percent of the lower of the offering-start and purchase-date price, contributions up to 15 percent of base plus bonus and commissions, capped at $25,000 of stock value per calendar year. [official]
- Insurance — Life cover at two times target cash compensation. Benefits-eligible United States employees receive the lesser of two times annual target cash compensation or $2 million, which is one of the few benefit amounts Cadence states numerically. [official]
- Medical — Multiple medical, dental and vision plan options. Cadence confirms a choice of plans, but current carriers, premium share, deductibles and state-by-state plan detail are not published. [official]
- Leave — Paid vacation, holidays and family-support benefits. Confirmed in Cadence's own materials. The universal day schedule is not published, so entitlement depends on employee class and location. [official]
- Other — Disability, health and flexible spending accounts, adoption, tuition and volunteer benefits. Reported by benefits aggregators rather than published by Cadence. Exact limits and eligibility require current enrolment documents. [reported]
Global programs
- Wellbeing — Whole-person physical, emotional, financial and relational support. Described on Cadence's own Life at Cadence pages as a global framing rather than a fixed schedule of entitlements. [official]
- Flexibility — Flexible and mindful work-life balance. Cadence describes flexible work globally but publishes no fixed hybrid-day rule, so team implementation varies. [official]
- Recognition — Peer-to-peer monetary recognition awards. Officially disclosed in the filings. Award sizes, frequency and eligibility rules are not published. [official]
- Growth — Learning, tuition and employee assistance programmes. Reported by benefits aggregators. Platform, vendor, caps and global eligibility are not published by Cadence. [reported]
- Mobility — Global rotation, internal mobility, certification reimbursement and sabbatical. No formal global policy was located for any of these in the sources reviewed. [npd]
Benefit fields not publicly quantified
Statutory baselines shown here are the legal floor in each country, not evidence that Cadence pays only the floor. Where a row is marked not publicly disclosed, no source in the bundle supports a figure, and the current offer or enrolment documents control. India in particular is a large workforce with almost no published benefit detail, which is the single biggest evidence gap in this report.
Performance Review & Pay Progression
Cadence discloses that compensation is performance-linked and that executive base salaries are reviewed annually in the first quarter, and discloses essentially nothing else about how performance turns into pay for the rest of the workforce.

Modeled promotion planning timeline
| Band | Years to next scope | Promotion hike | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| E1 | About 2–3 years to E2 | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| E2 | About 2–3 further years to E3 | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| E3 | About 2–4 further years to E4 | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| E4 | About 3–5 further years to E5 | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| E5 | Scope dependent; E6 and E7 are not automatic | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| E6 | Not linear; depends on enterprise technical impact | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| E7 | Terminal observed technical band in public data | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| M1 | Role dependent; no published time-in-band rule | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| M2 | Not publicly disclosed; biographies show progression, not timing | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
Two timing facts are confirmed and worth planning around. Executive base salaries are reviewed annually, generally in the first quarter, and the employee bonus program is semi-annual rather than annual, which means half of a year's variable pay settles mid-year. Everything else about the calendar, including when broad employee increases take effect, is absent from public disclosure.
Pay progression evidence
Inferred progression from the clustering of experience in public submissions, not Cadence policy: Software Engineer I to II takes about 2 to 3 years, II to Lead about 2 to 3 further years, Lead to Principal about 2 to 4 further years, and Principal to Senior Principal about 3 to 5 further years. Above that the Architect and Senior Architect steps are scope and impact dependent rather than time dependent, and the move onto the management track is role dependent because a manager is not automatically above a principal or architect. No promotion hike percentage is published at any step, and the lateral against internal promotion gap is not measurable from public data because anonymous submissions carry no matched employee records.
H-1B / LCA Visa Footprint — United States
Cadence is a moderate and technically concentrated H-1B sponsor, and the aggregators disagree with each other because they count different immigration processes over different fiscal windows. Labour condition application wages are required or offered base salary, so they exclude equity, bonus, the stock purchase discount and benefits.
Dataset summary
| Dataset | Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| MyVisaJobs employer profile | 342 LCAs, 118 PERM, 116 prevailing-wage requests and 141 I-129 petitions in the FY2026 snapshot | Four different immigration processes on one page. Combining them into a single petition total is the most common error with this source. |
| MyVisaJobs FY2025 view | 310 certified labour condition applications | Higher than the Ellis count for the same year because of employer-name matching and refresh timing. |
| Ellis visa sponsor record | 282 FY2025 labour condition applications at a $132,683 median wage | The tightest single-year view in the bundle and the one used for the headline median here. |
| H1BGrader sponsor overview | FY2026 median wage of $153,493 | A separate H1BGrader view returns a materially lower, non-comparable figure. The two should not be averaged. |
City-level H-1B wage history
| City | P25 | Median | P75 | Records |
|---|---|---|---|---|
California (statewide) FY2021 to FY2026 combined, not a single-year city table. This is the only Cadence view in the bundle with a real wage distribution. | $132K | $153,000 | $177K | 697 |
Irvine, CA — Application Engineer A single title and location record, so the percentiles collapse onto the median. Treat it as one data point, not a city wage level. | $125K | $125,174 | $125K | 1 |
All-years aggregates. P25/P75 are rounded reconstruction values marked modeled; medians and record counts are the stronger fields.
Selected title / worksite records
| Title | Worksite | Proffered wage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| All sponsored roles | San Jose, CA | $154,359 median | Highest city aggregate in the bundle, consistent with headquarters role mix. Percentiles and record count are not disclosed at city level. |
| All sponsored roles | Burlington, MA | $151,226 median | Within 2 percent of San Jose, which supports the New England cluster being priced near the headquarters market. |
| Lead Application Engineer | Austin, TX | $139,630 median | Current filings include this title at the Austin city median, roughly 10 percent below the San Jose aggregate. |
| All sponsored roles | Cary, NC | $110,947 median | The lowest city aggregate, about 28 percent below San Jose. Cary does not appear in the office list used for the pay table. |
| Application Engineer | Irvine, CA | $125,174 | A single record. It is a real filing, not an aggregate, and should not be read as an Irvine wage level. |
Reading the data correctly
- Labour condition application wages are required or offered base salary. They exclude annualised stock, the semi-annual bonus, the stock purchase discount and every benefit, so they are not comparable to a total compensation figure from a salary submission.
- Labour condition applications, PERM cases, prevailing-wage requests and I-129 petitions are four separate processes. A sponsor page listing 342, 118, 116 and 141 is not describing 717 of anything.
- Aggregator counts conflict for the same fiscal year because of employer-name matching, filter definitions and refresh timing. This report preserves each source's own definition rather than averaging them into a false consensus.
- City medians in this bundle come without percentiles or record counts, so a $110,947 Cary figure and a $154,359 San Jose figure may rest on very different sample sizes.
- The California distribution combines FY2021 through FY2026, so it blends six years of wage inflation into one spread and will overstate the current 25th percentile.
- A certified application is permission to file, not an employee. Approval and denial counts are the closer proxy for actual hiring, and in the listed FY2026 view all 141 decided petitions were approved.
Key Nuances & Insights
The chief executive's reported total tripled between 2024 and 2025 without a comparable change in annual pay, because the Summary Compensation Table recognises the entire grant-date value of a multi-year long-term performance award in the year it is granted. Cadence publishes its own annualised alternative of $36,504,547 in the same proxy, which would put the ratio nearer 380:1. Anyone quoting 592:1 without that context is quoting an artefact.
Cadence confirms a semi-annual bonus program. Half the year's variable pay settles mid-year rather than in a single annual payment, and the executive disclosures show two separate company factors per year, 103.6 percent and 110.1 percent in FY2025. For an employee comparing offers, a semi-annual cycle is materially different from an annual one even at the same target percentage.
Cadence exposes titles and requisitions but no global numeric grade system, and the source research is explicit that the E and M labels are analytical navigation labels rather than internal codes. Walking into a conversation citing an E5 band is citing something that does not exist inside the company.
The Omnibus Plan is described as broad-based and other employees received 1,503,584 shares in FY2025 against 829,426 for executive officers. That proves reach, not entitlement. No minimum eligible level, no standard grant matrix and no guarantee of an individual award is published anywhere.
994,747 options were outstanding at 31 December 2025 at a $193.12 weighted-average exercise price, FY2025 option expense was $16.101 million, and two executive exercises at $202.94 appear in the 2026 Form 4 record. Several large software peers have stopped granting options entirely, so an option component in a Cadence offer is not automatically a legacy artefact.
A 15 percent discount applied to the lower of the offering-start and purchase-date price over a six-month window is worth more than 15 percent whenever the share price rises across the period. It is also the only equity component an employee controls, up to 15 percent of pay and the $25,000 United States statutory cap, and 284,404 shares were bought in the offering that closed on 31 January 2026.
Reported United States to India total compensation ratios fall from about 7.8 times at Software Engineer I and 6.7 times at Software Engineer II to about 2.8 times at Senior Principal and 2.1 times at Architect. Almost all of the convergence is equity: the reported Indian stock component runs from zero at the most junior level to 3,921,509 rupees at Architect. Base pay converges far more slowly, which is why a base-only comparison badly understates the compression.
Observed bonus-to-base sits near 8 percent from Software Engineer I through Principal, steps to 10.6 percent at Senior Principal and 11.7 percent at Architect, then jumps to 19.6 percent at Senior Architect. The structural implication is that the cash variable component, not just equity, is a lever that opens late on the technical track.
The standard non-employee director package before chair and meeting fees is $320,000, against an observed Software Architect total of $304,972 and a Senior Architect total of $390,889. Cadence also still pays per-meeting fees of $2,000 and $1,000, which many large-cap boards have dropped.
Cadence completed the roughly $3.1 billion Hexagon Design and Engineering acquisition in February 2026 and has published no salary-grade harmonisation framework, no integration timeline and no indication of how acquired titles map onto its own. For anyone joining from that population the level mapping is genuinely undetermined rather than merely undisclosed.
Cadence is an electronic design automation product and research company, not a client-delivery services pyramid. There is no billing band, no client-site premium and no offshore rotation allowance schedule, and none was found in the sources. The United States to India difference is a labour-market and equity-design difference, not a delivery-model one.
The United States has seven matched technical levels and India six. The United Kingdom has two, Taiwan three, Canada two and Australia one cohort built from two submissions. Nineteen further offices across Europe, Israel and Asia have no public Cadence pay evidence at all, which is why they are named in the office note rather than priced in the table.
Paul Cunningham and Chin-Chi Teng both received $14,071,174 of FY2025 stock awards for different business groups, and both sit on $500,000 bases. That symmetry is the strongest public hint that Cadence runs a level-based equity band at the senior vice president tier even though it publishes none.
Cadence discusses culture and human capital in its filings, but no public, auditable salary-gap remediation matrix by level or country was found. There is no published gender pay ratio, no adjusted regression and no remediation commitment to hold the company to.
Research control
Against its closest comparators Cadence pays its chief executive far more on paper and its median employee about the same. The $95,689 median sits within a few thousand dollars of Synopsys at $93,538, PTC at $90,135 and Keysight at $85,838, and well below Autodesk at $147,841, so the 592:1 ratio is driven by the numerator rather than by an unusually low workforce. On the employee side the observed technical ladder tracks the large-cap semiconductor software market: entry-level total compensation of $134,070 is competitive without being a leader, and the package only becomes equity-heavy at the architect levels, where annualised stock reaches 22 percent of total at Software Architect against 2 percent at Software Engineer I.
Evidence classification
| Label | Meaning | Examples and permitted use |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | A Cadence filing, an official Cadence page, an employer-posted requisition range or a government rule. | Executive pay, the pay ratio, equity plans and reserves, the stock purchase plan terms, headcount, revenue, the director base range and statutory benefit baselines. |
| Reported | A named third-party dataset with observable records, chiefly Levels.fyi, Glassdoor and the visa aggregators. | Every technical band median, the India, United Kingdom, Canada, Taiwan and Australia observations, and the H-1B wage distributions. |
| Modeled | The San Jose anchor multiplied by a location calibration factor and foreign exchange, inside a planning envelope. | Every city without a direct observation at a level, the manager and director component splits, and the interpolated mid-ladder factors for India, Canada and Taiwan. |
| Not publicly disclosed | No source in the research bundle supports a figure. | Recorded as such rather than estimated, including the rating scale, hike percentages, attrition, most Indian benefits and all Vice President pay. |
Explicit “Not publicly disclosed” index
Known gaps and diligence before relying on a cell
- 1Executive rows are deliberately excluded from the band table. The chief executive, named executive and board figures are single global proxy disclosures, and letting them anchor the top of the location interpolation would put an Indian or Taiwanese cell on a United States executive base. They are carried in the executive section instead, so the band table stops at the director row and covers nine levels rather than a full ladder.
- 2Distinguished Engineer, Fellow, Corporate Vice President and Vice President have no public pay evidence of any kind, so no band row exists for them even though all four are real layers between the director row and the named executive tier.
- 3The manager and director rows carry only one disclosed component each: a $278,000 reported total for the manager and a $178,500 to $331,500 employer-posted base range for the director. Their bonus and equity components are modelled on the adjacent technical levels and should be treated as a planning envelope.
- 4The two visa aggregators disagree on FY2025 volume, 282 certified applications from Ellis against 310 from MyVisaJobs, and on the median wage, $132,683 against H1BGrader's $153,493 FY2026 view. Neither is traceable to a government filing in this bundle, so both are shown with their own definitions rather than reconciled.
- 5Nineteen Cadence offices across continental Europe, Israel, China, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia are omitted from the location table because the bundle found no compensation evidence for them. They are named in the office note. Inventing a factor to include them would have been a fabrication rather than a model.
- 6United States cities other than Austin and Chelmsford are held at the nationwide anchor because the underlying salary records are United States-wide rather than city-level. San Jose is the labelled anchor, so a San Jose cell is really a United States median and will understate the true Bay Area premium.
- 7Total compensation is rebuilt strictly as base plus bonus plus annualised stock. No notional employer benefit load, Provident Fund contribution or superannuation guarantee is added anywhere, because those are employer cost rather than pay.
- 8The India Principal row has a disclosed total of 5,181,887 rupees with no component split, so the Indian base and total factors are fitted across five levels rather than six.
- 9Australia rests on two Glassdoor submissions mapped analytically to the Principal cohort, and carries flat factors because a single observed cohort cannot evidence level-dependent compression.
- 10No fiscal-year-end date is stated in the bundle beyond the 10-K covering the period ended 31 December 2025, and no founding year is given, so neither is asserted beyond what the filings support.

Recent News & Workforce Trend
Cadence's 2026 has been dominated by an acquisition and an equity plan amendment rather than by any workforce pay action. No companywide salary announcement appears in any reviewed source.
Headcount has grown at roughly 10 to 13 percent a year and has added about 3,600 people since 2022, faster than the roughly 2 percent a year typical of mature large-cap software. Only the 2025 figure comes from a filing; the earlier three are secondary compilations. Cadence publishes no attrition series and no headcount by country or city, and the February 2026 Hexagon Design and Engineering acquisition adds a further engineering population that will not be visible as a separate line in any disclosure.
A 1,000-share exercise at $202.94 alongside a 4,732-share disposition at $314.49, the second such pair in a month and evidence that older option grants are still being realised.
The FY2026 revenue guide was set at $6.26 billion to $6.34 billion. Strong growth improves the incentive-plan backdrop but no employee pay action accompanied the result.
The amendment also removed the plan's fixed 2030 term, extending equity capacity well beyond the added shares. The live balance after subsequent grants is not disclosed.
Executed under a Rule 10b5-1 plan adopted on 6 May 2025, nearly a year before the trade, which is the pattern across every disposition in the reviewed filings.
24,684 shares withheld at $292.84 against the Chief Financial Officer's vesting. Mechanical withholding, not an elective sale, and larger than any voluntary disposition in the window.
A 15,616-unit award to the Chief Financial Officer, with value realised only if vesting and market conditions permit.
Adds a substantial engineering workforce. No public grade or pay harmonisation framework had been published by the report date, so acquired-population levelling remains undetermined.
Stock-based compensation rose to $455.175 million from $391.2 million in FY2024, and 6,154,415 unvested awards and 994,747 options were outstanding at year end.
The most recent disclosed broad employee purchase activity under the 15 percent lookback discount, and the clearest evidence of employee-level participation in Cadence equity.
The grant cycle that drives the $54.4 million chief executive stock figure and the identical $14.07 million grants to both group general managers.
