How Best Buy Pays
Best Buy's observed GL6 to GL12 corporate technology ladder and VP tier, priced across 11 markets in the United States, Canada and India alongside 2020 Omnibus Plan restricted and performance shares, the 2008 ESPP, a $17.35M CEO package at 542:1, and 131 FY2025 H-1B wage records.
Band Hierarchy
Best Buy publishes no enterprise grade dictionary. GL6 through GL12 is an observed corporate technology and product ladder taken from public salary submissions in the United States, India and Canada; the store, Geek Squad, distribution and field-leadership population is marketed by title rather than by any visible grade and is reported separately here rather than forced into the same numbering.

Hierarchy qualifications and legacy structures
- GL6 through GL12 appears consistently in United States, India and Canada technology and product salary submissions, but Best Buy has never published a grade catalogue, so the evidence does not establish that a store associate, a distribution manager, a finance analyst and a software engineer sit in the same scheme.
- The GL10 label spans a senior individual contributor and a senior manager in public data, and GL9 appears in both the engineering and management samples, so role family matters more than the number alone.
- Vice President, Executive Vice President, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer are official Best Buy titles rather than hidden grade numbers, and no filing maps them to a GL.
- The retail R1 to R4 stages used in the source bundles are analytical normalisations invented to make unlike job postings comparable. They are not Best Buy-issued grades and they are not carried into the band table here.
- No material predecessor-grade harmonisation or post-merger band system was disclosed in the reviewed 2024 to 2026 filings. The Best Buy Health restructuring and the Mexico exit changed the footprint, not a disclosed enterprise grade architecture.
Peer-level mapping

| VP | Vice President | Target vice president, Walmart vice president, Home Depot vice president | Best Buy discloses no vice-president compensation table; this row bridges senior-director observations and named-executive pay.Midpoint of the bundles' $180,000 to $300,000 base and $211,208 to $387,000 total vice-president envelope; the equity split is modelled because no vice-president grant schedule is public. |
Critical evidence warning
Best Buy does not publish salary ranges, band minimums or midpoints for any employee population, and it publishes no merit matrix, rating scale or promotion-hike table. Every non-executive figure here is a third-party observation, a posted role range or a calibrated model around one, and should be used for orientation rather than quoted as a Best Buy pay band.

Global Footprint & Pay Arbitrage
Best Buy reported 82,230 employees at 31 January 2026 across four countries, with 88 percent of them in the United States. Richfield is the pay anchor for the corporate ladder, Vancouver anchors the Canadian International segment and Bengaluru is a captive technology hub with no retail network behind it.

Bengaluru India · INR | Captive technology hub for software, data, artificial intelligence and product; there is no Best Buy retail network in India | Official filing headcount of 430 at 31 January 2026 | 0.14× | 0.13× |
Best Buy publishes no city-level headcount for any market except the 430-person Bengaluru hub and the 115-person China sourcing office. United States and Canadian city entries therefore describe operating role and pay calibration, not office size. Shanghai, Hong Kong, London, Sydney and Mexico City appear in the source bundles as footprint or legal-entity notes with no compensation evidence and are excluded here rather than given fabricated factors.
Richfield anchor medians — the basis of every modeled cell
| Band | Base | Stock | Bonus | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GL6 | $80K | $0 | $5K | $85K |
| GL7 | $103K | $0 | $8K | $111K |
| GL8 | $136K | $3K | $12K | $150K |
| GL9 | $160K | $3K | $17K | $180K |
| GL10 | $185K | $13K | $20K | $218K |
| GL9M | $157K | $0 | $33K | $190K |
| GL10M | $179K | $8K | $31K | $218K |
- The Richfield column is the anchor. GL6 through GL10 medians come from Levels.fyi United States software and product records dated 18 to 19 August 2026, and the GL9 Manager and GL10 Senior Manager rows come from the same source's management sample.
- GL11, GL12 and Vice President are midpoints of posted company base ranges combined with the bundles' modelled total envelopes, rebuilt so that base plus bonus plus equity reconciles to the total shown.
- Bengaluru is calibrated from four directly observed levels: GL7 at 1.80 million rupees, GL8 at 2.87 million, GL9 at 4.63 million and GL10 at up to 7.26 million. India total compensation runs at roughly 17 percent of the Richfield anchor at GL7 and about 35 percent at GL10, so the report gives India a rising factor rather than one flat multiplier.
- Vancouver is calibrated from Canadian technology records where GL7 sits at about 68 percent of the United States total, GL8 at about 49 percent and GL9 at about 58 percent. The GL8 sample reads below GL7, which is sampling noise rather than an internal salary inversion, so the Canadian curve here is deliberately smoothed and should be treated as the weakest calibration in the report.
- Executive rows are deliberately absent from the band table. The Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer figures are single global proxy disclosures that are identical in every city, and interpolating city factors towards them would produce an absurd Bengaluru or Vancouver executive cell.
Model rules
- Every modeled cell is the Richfield median multiplied by the city base or total factor and then by the 24 August 2026 European Central Bank reference-rate snapshot.
- United States city factors are flat across the ladder at 1.15 for Seattle, 1.08 for Los Angeles, 1.02 for Chicago and 0.98 for Atlanta and Dallas, because the source bundle applies one multiplier to every level in a market and no company city differential is published.
- Canada and India carry separate junior and senior factors because both compress against Richfield as seniority rises. The junior factor applies at GL6 and the senior factor at Vice President, with every band in between interpolated by seniority.
- A total compensation cell is base plus target bonus plus annualised equity. Sign-on payments, relocation, severance and one-time retention awards are excluded, and no notional employer benefit load is added to any total.
- Frontline store, Geek Squad and distribution pay is excluded from the calibrated table entirely. Canadian store pay runs at roughly 65 to 73 percent of the United States equivalent while Canadian corporate technology pay runs at roughly 49 to 68 percent, and India has no store population at all, so a single interpolated factor would misstate whole markets.
Variable Pay & Annual Cash Incentive
Best Buy discloses the executive short-term incentive in full and discloses nothing about the employee bonus grid. Named-executive targets, metric weights and payout percentages below are company disclosures; every band target is an observed ratio from public salary submissions or a posted range, not a company target.

Employee payout timing and history
Best Buy publishes no bonus-target grid for GL6 through GL12, no payout calendar, no business-unit multiplier and no non-executive payout history for any of the last three years. The 84.07 percent figure applies to the executive plan only and must not be read as a companywide multiplier. The band targets above are ratios observed in individual salary submissions, which mix tenure, location and role family.
Sales and special incentives
Store incentives, spot recognition, sales contests, attachment bonuses and project bonuses may exist by role, but no enterprise formula, accelerator schedule or draw arrangement was located in any filing or posting. Commission-carrying and store-management roles will therefore be understated by any model that applies a corporate bonus percentage to them.
Equity — RSUs, PSUs, Options & ESPP
Best Buy is a New York Stock Exchange issuer, so employee equity means restricted shares, performance shares and employee stock purchase plan purchases rather than an Indian-style employee stock ownership plan. The 2020 Omnibus Incentive Plan legally permits options and stock appreciation rights, but Best Buy reported no incentive stock option grants and does not currently make new option-like awards.
- The two research bundles reconcile exactly on capacity: 20,630,806 shares were available for future issuance across all shareholder-approved plans at 31 January 2026, of which 2,980,937 sat in the employee stock purchase plan reserve, leaving 17,649,869 under the 2020 Omnibus Plan.
- Simple arithmetic implies about 52 percent of the post-amendment headline authorisation remained and about 48 percent had been consumed, but that is only a rough availability ratio because full-value awards count two-for-one and forfeiture and recycling rules change the reserve.
- 4,906,111 options and rights were outstanding at a weighted-average exercise price of $63.49. That price applies to the legacy option population only and has nothing to do with restricted or performance shares.
- FY2026 stock compensation expense was $139 million, split $119 million time-based, $16 million market-based and $4 million performance-based, which is itself evidence that time-based restricted shares dominate the grant population.
Equity plan capacity and grant activity
Vesting — common reported employee schedule
Employee and executive time-based restricted shares generally vest one third on each of the first three anniversaries of grant, subject to continued service and the award agreement. Executive performance shares are a single settlement after a three-year performance period at zero to 150 percent of target. Non-employee director awards vest over about one year with settlement generally deferred until board service ends. Shares bought through the employee stock purchase plan are purchased rather than granted, and the 2012 plan text imposed a one-year holding period on post-April-2011 purchases.
Eligibility by hierarchy level
- Legal eligibility under the 2020 Omnibus Plan is broad and covers employees, officers, advisers, consultants and non-employee directors, but grants are entirely discretionary. There is no published minimum GL, no guaranteed grant schedule and no statement that any employee population receives a recurring award.
- Public salary samples show zero recurring stock at GL6 and GL7 in the United States, a small component appearing at GL8 and GL9, about $8,000 at a sampled GL10 Senior Manager and nothing at all in the displayed India GL7 to GL10 records. That is observed grant practice, not an eligibility rule.
- No annual restricted or performance grant policy was located for the frontline store, Geek Squad or distribution population. The absence of evidence is recorded as an absence of evidence, not as a confirmed exclusion.
- Material annual equity is only firmly evidenced from the named-executive layer upward, where FY2026 long-term incentive targets ran from $1.60 million to $13.70 million. A proxy example also describes a non-named-executive senior employee receiving both restricted and performance shares, which supports awards extending below the named-executive group without establishing a cutoff.
- Any page claiming that equity starts at a specific grade would overstate the evidence. What the filings establish is discretion, not a threshold.

Her 20 August 2026 Form 4 reported 33,536 restricted shares. |
Executive Compensation
FY2026 Summary Compensation Table values from the 2026 proxy statement, covering the year ended 31 January 2026. Stock is a grant-date accounting value rather than cash received, and the gap is real: the FY2023 performance-share tranche that settled inside FY2026 paid nothing.
Reading the package
Salary was about 7.5 percent of Corie Barry's FY2026 reported total, stock awards about 79.0 percent, non-equity incentive about 12.6 percent and other compensation about 0.9 percent. The proxy describes roughly 93 percent of chief-executive target compensation and about 80 percent for the other named executives as variable or at risk. The FY2026 incentive paid 84.07 percent of target and the FY2023 performance-share cycle paid zero, so the at-risk framing is not decorative.
Best Buy's chief executive total sits below Walmart, Target and Lowe's and about 7 percent above Home Depot, but the peers differ sharply in revenue scale, fiscal period and chief-executive transition status, so the comparison is directional rather than a compensation-practice equivalence. The pay ratios are the more revealing column: Best Buy at 542 to 1 against a $32,018 median, Lowe's at 578 to 1 against $37,371 and Home Depot at 427 to 1 against $37,881. The spread is driven far more by store-workforce mix and hours than by executive pay design.
Named Executive Officers & Board
Best Buy is mid-transition. Corie Barry remains chief executive until 31 October 2026 and Jason Bonfig succeeds her on 1 November 2026. Anne Bramman became Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer on 19 August 2026, and an executive-team restructure was announced on 14 July 2026, so FY2027 comparisons will need role proration rather than a simple year-on-year read.
Jason Bonfig's filed chief-executive terms are a $1.25 million base salary, a 190 percent target annual incentive for the chief-executive portion of the year, a $10.125 million FY2028 annual long-term incentive target and a $1.78125 million FY2027 true-up award split 50 percent performance and 50 percent restricted equity. Anne Bramman's filed terms are a $950,000 base salary, a 150 percent FY2027 short-term incentive target, a $3.25 million FY2027 long-term incentive split half performance and half restricted, a $500,000 sign-on cash award, a $1.25 million sign-on restricted-share award and relocation support. Damien Harmon's role was eliminated in July 2025 and the FY2026 proxy disclosed about $1.784 million of severance-related value inside his other-compensation column.
Board compensation framework
| Element | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Annual cash retainer | $100,000 | Paid to each non-employee director. The chief executive receives no board pay. |
| Non-executive chair additional cash | $65,000 | On top of the standard cash retainer. |
| Audit Committee chair | $25,000 | The largest committee retainer, reflecting the workload. |
| Compensation and Human Resources Committee chair | $20,000 | Approves the executive incentive design and the annual grants. |
| Nominating and Corporate Governance chair | $20,000 | Oversees board composition and governance. |
| Annual restricted stock unit award | $205,000 | 2,946 units in the 2025 cycle, vesting over about one year with deferred settlement. |
| Non-executive chair additional equity | $135,000 | 1,940 additional units in the 2025 cycle. |
FY2026 actual totals for most non-employee directors ran roughly $305,000 to $330,000, while board chair David Kenny was disclosed at about $505,000. Corie Barry received no separate director compensation for board service while serving as chief executive.
Regional heads and other officers
Vice presidents, senior vice presidents and executive officers who did not qualify as named executives have no compensation table at all. Their pay is visible only through Section 16 share movements, and no filing maps any of these titles to a GL number. The FY2026 proxy also notes several delayed Form 4 reports covering March 2025 tax-withholding dispositions, which were administrative share withholding rather than discretionary sales.
Insider Trades — SEC Forms 3/4/5
Best Buy is New York Stock Exchange listed, so the governing record is SEC Forms 3, 4, 5 and 144. Indian promoter, SEBI takeover and employee stock ownership trust regimes do not apply. The March 2026 cluster is instructive: acquisitions on 20 March are award settlements and the 23 March sales are Form 144 disposals connected to the tax obligation on those settlements, not discretionary bearish selling.

Benefits & Perks
Best Buy's benefit picture is far better evidenced than its pay picture in the United States, thinner in Canada and largely absent for India. Everything below comes from a filing, a plan document or a current company posting unless it is marked as employee-reported.
United States
- Retirement — 401(k) matching 100% of the first 3% plus 50% of the next 2%. A maximum employer contribution of 4 percent when the employee defers at least 5 percent, available after one year of service, with the safe-harbour match immediately vested. Employees may contribute from age 18 with no minimum service. Voya Financial is recordkeeper and trustee, and plan net assets were $3.542 billion at 31 December 2025 on $134.587 million of participant and $62.726 million of employer contributions for the year. [official]
- Retirement — No pension plan. Best Buy states in the 2026 proxy that it does not offer pension plans to United States-based employees. The 401(k) is the whole retirement programme. [official]
- Family — 10 weeks paid birth-parent leave and 4 weeks for non-birth parents. Both at 100 percent of pay for eligible employees. Caregiver pay runs to 4 weeks at full pay and medical leave to 6 weeks at full pay, and leave types can combine in some maternity situations. Wellthy caregiving support and Joshin disability and neurodivergence support are also offered. [official]
- Leave — 11 PTO days, 7 paid holidays and a 4-week wellbeing sabbatical. The PTO and holiday counts come from current postings and vary by role and employment status. Eligible full-time employees with five or more years of service can take a 4-week wellbeing sabbatical once every three years. [official]
- Growth — No Cost-No Debt College Degrees. Introduced in FY2026 for eligible full-time and part-time employees, alongside other tuition-support pathways and the LEAD, Leadership Essentials and Altitude development programmes. [official]
- Recognition — Long-service benefits and the Applause programme. 30-year service awards, a lifetime employee discount after 35 years and a fully paid sabbatical after 40 years, plus the Applause recognition programme added in FY2026. [official]
- Health — Medical, dental, vision, life, AD&D and disability. Current postings list the full set for eligible employees. The insurer, plan tiers and employee premium split are plan-specific and are not disclosed in any reviewed filing. [official]
- Emergency — HOPE Fund hardship grants up to $2,500. An employee relief fund providing grants for qualifying hardship situations, subject to programme rules. [official]
- Ownership — 2008 Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Active with 2,980,937 shares reserved at 31 January 2026 for eligible employees of designated subsidiaries. Current discount, lookback and enrollment mechanics are not restated in the latest reviewed filing and must be confirmed in live materials. [official]
Global programs
- Ownership — 2020 Omnibus Incentive Plan awards. Restricted shares, restricted stock units and performance shares are legally available to employees, officers, advisers, consultants and directors, entirely at committee discretion. There is no published minimum grade and no guaranteed grant. [official]
- Discount — Employee discount on Best Buy products. A standard benefit across markets, escalating to a lifetime discount after 35 years of service in the United States. The ordinary discount formula is not restated in any SEC filing. [official]
- Support — Employee Assistance Programme and mental wellbeing resources. Assessments, coaching and expanded counselling resources, enhanced during FY2026 alongside the caregiving and neurodivergence support partnerships. [official]
- Growth — LEAD, Leadership Essentials and Altitude development programmes. Disclosed in the FY2026 human-capital reporting alongside function-specific onboarding. Country availability and eligibility vary. [official]
Benefit fields not publicly quantified
Employee premium contributions, plan tiers, insurers and eligibility waiting periods are not published in any market. Best Buy Canada does not publish the employee contribution needed to earn the full pension match, and no Best Buy-specific India schedule exists for provident fund design, gratuity treatment, insurance provider, family-floater amount, leave entitlement, National Pension System contribution, transport or meal benefits. The 115-person China population has no published benefit schedule at all. These are recorded as not publicly disclosed rather than estimated from statute or peer practice.
Performance Review & Pay Progression
Best Buy runs a highly calibrated, formulaic and fully disclosed performance system for its named executives and publishes essentially nothing about how everyone else is reviewed and paid. The absence of public detail is not evidence that no internal review system exists.

What is visible is the executive cycle. The board's Compensation and Human Resources Committee conducts annual goal setting and certification, long-term incentive grants are generally approved in the first fiscal quarter, and the short-term incentive is certified against three disclosed metrics after the year closes. Nothing about that cadence should be extrapolated to the general employee population, and Best Buy explicitly declines to publish a merit matrix.
Pay progression evidence
Modelled progression, not Best Buy policy, and not a promotion promise: the source bundles model about 2 years at GL6, 2.5 at GL7, 3.5 at GL8, 4 at GL9, 4.5 at GL10 and 5 at GL11, with retail stages modelled at 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 5 years. The associated promotion increase is not publicly disclosed at any level. The one structural pattern the data does support is that the cash step between adjacent GL levels is large early in the ladder, roughly 30 percent from GL6 to GL7 and 32 percent from GL7 to GL8, and flattens sharply above GL9, where mix rather than base does the work.
H-1B / LCA Visa Footprint — United States
Best Buy is a small and geographically concentrated H-1B sponsor. Labour condition application wages are employer-filed base salary for sponsored professional roles only: they exclude bonus and equity, they describe none of the retail workforce, and a certified application is a filing rather than a hire.
Dataset summary
| Dataset | Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| H1BData.info FY2025 rows | 131 records with a calculated $156,483 median and $159,766 average | The row-level set used for the distribution and the city table in this report. |
| MyVisaJobs employer profile | 174 FY2025 and 125 FY2026 year-to-date applications | Also the source for the I-129 approval history and the average-salary trend of $155,975 in 2025, $147,154 in 2024 and $142,712 in 2023. |
| H1BGrader FY2026 snapshot | 81 records with a $154,470 median and an $84,038 minimum | 75th percentile $176,651, 90th percentile $199,649 and maximum $240,858, with 80 approved against one denial in the same snapshot. |
| VisaSignal cross-check | $155,284 median on a normalised record set | 25th percentile about $135,445 and 75th percentile about $180,895, close to the H1BData FY2025 shape on a different refresh date. |
| Ellis cumulative sponsor table | Title-level medians across all filing years | Not a single-year set. It carries an obvious $1.25 million Software Engineer II maximum that should never be read as a salary ceiling. |
City-level H-1B wage history
| City | P25 | Median | P75 | Records |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Richfield, Minnesota The headquarters worksite and overwhelmingly the dominant one, at 119 of the 131 FY2025 rows. Includes amendments and continuations, so it does not equal hires. | $137K | $156,709 | $174K | 119 |
Seattle, Washington Only two FY2025 records, so this is not a stable market estimate despite being the highest median in the set. | $197K | $222,838 | $249K | 2 |
Bellevue, Washington Two identical FY2025 records at the same wage, which is why the quartiles collapse to a single number. | $127K | $127,490 | $127K | 2 |
Atlanta, Georgia Only two FY2025 records at a materially lower level than the Seattle metro rows. | $121K | $124,863 | $129K | 2 |
Kirkland, Washington A single FY2025 record. Shown for completeness rather than as a market signal. | $200K | $200,000 | $200K | 1 |
Redmond, Washington A single FY2025 record, close to the Richfield median. | $154K | $154,293 | $154K | 1 |

Selected title / worksite records
| Title | Worksite | Proffered wage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software Engineer II | All Best Buy worksites, cumulative sponsor table | $130,000 median across 103 positions | Low of $89,357 and a $1.25 million maximum that is an obvious extraction artefact rather than a real ceiling. |
| Senior Software Engineer | All Best Buy worksites, cumulative sponsor table | $154,500 median across 63 positions | Range of $123,600 to $177,598, which brackets the GL9 anchor base used in this report. |
| Lead Engineer | All Best Buy worksites, cumulative sponsor table | $159,238 median across 40 positions | Range of $100,000 to $209,000, straddling the GL9 and GL10 anchors. |
| Senior Engineering Manager | All Best Buy worksites, cumulative sponsor table | $176,000 median across 24 positions | Range of $140,000 to $194,813, close to the GL10 Senior Manager anchor base of $179,220. |
| Engineering Manager | All Best Buy worksites, cumulative sponsor table | $157,438 median across 24 positions | Range of $125,000 to $184,149, almost exactly the $157,062 GL9 Manager anchor base. |
| Prevailing wage level mix | United States, FY2026 labour condition applications | 5 at Level I, 26 at Level II, 6 at Level III and 32 at Level IV | Medians of $132,612, $143,711, $140,297 and $168,353 respectively. The Level III median reads below Level II because the cohort is only six filings. |
Reading the data correctly
- Labour condition application wages are proffered base salary. They exclude bonus, restricted and performance shares and any purchase-plan discount, so they cannot be compared with a total compensation figure.
- The sponsored population is professional technology, data and product work concentrated in Richfield. It represents a tiny fraction of an 82,230-person workforce and describes none of the store, Geek Squad or distribution population.
- Every worksite outside Richfield has one or two FY2025 records. Those city medians are shown for completeness and cannot support a market estimate.
- The aggregators disagree because they apply different fiscal-year filters, entity normalisation, refresh dates and status categories, and because some count applications while others count positions or petitions. This report preserves each extract separately rather than averaging them.
- Department of Labor certification is not a USCIS approval, an application is not a petition, and a petition is not an employee. Continuations and amendments inflate row counts relative to actual hiring.
Key Nuances & Insights
An 82,230-person workforce spans hourly store and Geek Squad service work, distribution, corporate functions, United States and Canadian technology and a captive Bengaluru hub. A single median Best Buy salary is analytically meaningless, which is exactly why the disclosed median employee sits at $32,018 while a GL9 engineer in Richfield sits at $180,000.
Frontline pay moves in a different direction across geographies from corporate pay. Canadian store roles run at roughly 65 to 73 percent of their United States equivalents while Canadian corporate technology runs at 49 to 68 percent, and India has no store population at all. Folding both into one interpolated city factor would misstate whole markets, so the hourly picture is carried in the metrics, career-level and news sections instead.
GL6 through GL12 is credible as an observed corporate technology and product ladder and appears consistently across United States, India and Canada submissions. It has never been published by Best Buy, and no evidence maps a store associate, a distribution manager or a finance analyst into it.
The 2020 Omnibus Plan permits awards to a very broad population, but every grant is discretionary. There is no minimum GL, no standard grant schedule and no guarantee of any recurring equity. Any claim that stock starts at a particular level overstates what the filings support.
Public samples show zero recurring stock at GL6 and GL7, a few thousand dollars at GL8 and GL9, about $8,000 at a sampled GL10 Senior Manager and nothing at all across the displayed India levels, while named executives received $1.60 million to $13.70 million of FY2026 grants. That is a step change of three orders of magnitude across a single organisation.
542 to 1 sounds extreme next to Home Depot's 427 to 1, but the difference is almost entirely the median: $32,018 against $37,881. Best Buy's chief executive total of $17.35 million is the lowest of the four retail peers compared here.
The FY2026 short-term incentive paid 84.07 percent of target and FY2025 paid 83.34 percent, both below target despite positive comparable sales, and the FY2023 performance-share tranche that settled inside FY2026 earned zero after missing threshold. Grant-date proxy values and realised value diverge materially here.
Onshore and offshore labels from IT services do not map onto a retailer's captive technology centre. The Bengaluru team works on software, data, artificial intelligence and product for Best Buy itself, and the 17 to 35 percent of United States pay observed on matched levels reflects labour market, currency and role mix rather than a billing structure.
The public GL8 Canadian package reads below GL7. That is almost certainly small-sample composition, timing or role variation rather than a formal internal salary inversion, and it is why the Canadian calibration in this report is smoothed and flagged as the weakest in the set.
The plan is unambiguously active with 2,980,937 shares reserved, but the current discount, lookback and offering mechanics were not restated in the latest reviewed filing, and prior amendments both cut the discount and removed the lookback. Quoting the historical 15 percent lookback discount as a current fact is the single easiest mistake to make with Best Buy equity.
Best Buy states plainly that it offers no pension to United States employees, while Best Buy Canada markets a matched company pension. These are separate country programmes and should never be collapsed into a global pension statement.
FY2026 compensation belongs to Corie Barry. Jason Bonfig's chief-executive terms begin on 1 November 2026 and Anne Bramman's chief financial officer terms began on 19 August 2026, so FY2027 and FY2028 will need role proration and new target benchmarks rather than a simple trend line.
Research control
Against Walmart, Target, Lowe's and Home Depot, Best Buy's chief-executive package is the smallest in the set at $17.35 million and its pay ratio is the second-highest at 542 to 1, a combination driven by the lowest median employee compensation of the group at $32,018. On the employee side the corporate technology ladder is competitive rather than leading: a GL9 Senior Software Engineer at $180,000 total sits well inside the large-cap retail technology market, and the package is unusually cash-weighted because recurring equity is discretionary rather than standard below the executive layer.
Evidence classification
| Label | Meaning | Examples and permitted use |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | A Best Buy SEC filing, an official plan document, a company benefit disclosure or a current company job posting. | Executive and director pay, workforce by country, equity plan terms and reserves, incentive metrics and payouts, United States benefits and posted hourly and salary ranges. |
| Reported | A named third-party dataset with observable records, chiefly Levels.fyi, Glassdoor, Indeed and the visa aggregators, plus anonymous employee benefit submissions. | The Richfield anchor medians, the Bengaluru and Vancouver observations, the H-1B wage distributions and the India benefit anecdotes. |
| Modeled | The Richfield anchor multiplied by a city calibration factor and foreign exchange, inside a planning envelope, or a midpoint of posted ranges rebuilt to reconcile. | Every city cell without a direct observation, and the GL11, GL12 and Vice President rows. |
| Not publicly disclosed | No source in either research bundle supports a figure. | Recorded as such rather than estimated, including the entire general-employee review and merit system. |
Explicit “Not publicly disclosed” index
Known gaps and diligence before relying on a cell
- 1The frontline store, Geek Squad and distribution population is deliberately excluded from the band table. Its geographic behaviour is the opposite of the corporate ladder, running at roughly 65 to 73 percent of United States pay in Canada where corporate technology runs at 49 to 68 percent, and it has no counterpart at all in India. Its posted hourly ranges are carried in the key metrics, the career-level section, the variable-pay table and the news commentary instead of being folded into one interpolated city factor.
- 2The Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer rows are left out of the band table entirely and carried only in the executive section. Both are single global proxy figures that the source bundle applied city multipliers to, which would have forced every location factor towards parity at the top and produced absurd Bengaluru and Vancouver executive cells. The employee ladder therefore tops out at Vice President with a seniority of 9.
- 3The two bundles use different foreign-exchange snapshots. One uses 25 August 2026 rates of 95.4125 rupees and 1.3835 Canadian dollars to the United States dollar; the other derives 95.7540 and 1.384945 from European Central Bank reference rates published on 24 August 2026. This report standardises on the European Central Bank derivation because it is traceable to a named official publisher, which moves converted figures by about 0.4 percent against the alternative.
- 4The bundles disagree on the current employee stock purchase plan terms. One presents the historical 15 percent discount to the lower of the beginning and ending price with a $25,000 annual limit; the other establishes that later amendments reduced the discount and removed the lookback and marks current mechanics as not publicly disclosed. This report follows the second and treats the historical terms as plan history.
- 5The Canadian calibration is the weakest in the report. The public GL8 package reads below GL7, GL10 reads below GL9 in base terms, and the observed ratios against Richfield swing between 49 and 76 percent across adjacent levels. The factors used here are smoothed across that noise rather than reproducing an inversion that is almost certainly a sampling artefact.
- 6India carries no observation below GL7 or above GL10, so the GL6 and Vice President ends of the Bengaluru curve are extrapolations from a four-point fit. The interpolated GL10 total sits about four percentage points below the directly observed 35 percent ratio, which is the largest single fitting error in the location table.
- 7United States city factors are flat across the entire ladder because that is how the source bundle constructed them. In reality a metro premium usually compresses at senior levels, so the Seattle and Los Angeles cells at GL11 and above are likely to be overstated relative to Richfield.
- 8No employer benefit load is added anywhere. Total compensation in this report is base plus target bonus plus annualised equity only, so it is pay rather than employer cost, and it will read below any figure that adds a notional benefits percentage on top.
- 9Kamy Scarlett's FY2026 stock award is carried at the disclosed $2.5 million long-term incentive target because the source bundles round her Summary Compensation Table stock column; her components sum to the $4.72 million total shown, but the stock line is the rounded figure rather than a cent-exact one.
- 10The March 2026 award settlements report no transaction price on the Form 4. Their values in the insider table apply the $64.019 price of the associated 23 March sales, which is an analytical valuation rather than a filed number.
- 11Shanghai, Hong Kong, London, Sydney and Mexico City appear in the source bundles as footprint, legal-entity or exited-market notes with no compensation evidence. They are omitted from the location table rather than given fabricated factors, so the report covers 11 markets across three countries.
- 12The bundles disagree on the FY2024 headcount snapshot, giving both a rounded 85,000 from the 10-K human-capital disclosure and 87,830 from the proxy pay-ratio population. The trend table uses the proxy populations where available because they are constructed on a consistent basis.

Recent News & Workforce Trend
Best Buy's 2026 has been dominated by a chief-executive succession, a chief financial officer change and a continued shrinkage of the workforce, rather than by any companywide compensation action. No enterprise salary-hike percentage, freeze or cut was announced in any reviewed source.
The workforce has fallen roughly 8 percent over three years, driven by store and labour optimisation rather than by a single announced reduction. FY2026 restructuring charges of about $190 million covered labour and store optimisation, Best Buy Health optimisation and China sourcing actions, and a $45 million termination-benefit liability remained at 31 January 2026. The one population moving the other way is Bengaluru, which grew from about 350 in mid-2025 towards a stated target of roughly 500 and stood at 430 at the FY2026 measurement date.
Segment revenue and workforce distribution
Best Buy reports two segments, Domestic for the United States and International for Canada, and the International segment represents about 8 percent of company revenue against 11 percent of headcount. India and China are support and sourcing populations inside the corporate structure rather than reportable revenue segments.
Filed terms are a $950,000 base salary, a 150 percent FY2027 short-term incentive target, a $3.25 million FY2027 long-term incentive split half performance and half restricted, a $500,000 sign-on cash award, a $1.25 million sign-on restricted-share award and relocation support.
Senior leadership responsibilities were reallocated ahead of the chief-executive transition, which will change the named-executive composition and the long-term incentive benchmarks used in future proxies.
With an adjusted operating income rate of 4.3 to 4.4 percent and adjusted diluted earnings per share of $6.30 to $6.60. Both revenue and operating income are direct inputs to the executive incentive score.
Chief-executive total compensation of $17,346,126 against a $32,018 median employee, up from 518:1 in FY2025. The short-term incentive paid 84.07 percent of target and the FY2023 performance-share cycle earned zero.
His chief-executive package is a $1.25 million base salary, a 190 percent short-term incentive target for the chief-executive portion of the year and a $10.125 million FY2028 annual long-term incentive target, with a $1.78125 million FY2027 true-up split 50 percent performance and 50 percent restricted.
About $190 million of charges across labour and store optimisation, Best Buy Health optimisation and China sourcing actions, with a $45 million termination-benefit liability remaining and year-end workforce down to 82,230.
No Cost-No Debt College Degrees, the Applause recognition programme, an enhanced employee assistance programme, a lifetime discount after 35 years of service and a paid sabbatical after 40 years.
Best Buy described plans to grow the India technology workforce from about 350 towards roughly 500. The FY2026 proxy later reported 430 employees in India, the only population in the company that grew.
Damien Harmon's Senior Executive Vice President role was eliminated. The FY2026 proxy disclosed about $1.784 million of severance-related value inside his other-compensation column and no annual incentive payment.
The amendment added 12.03 million shares, lifting the core authorisation from about 21.70 million to 33.73 million and leaving 17,649,869 shares available for future grant at the FY2026 year end.
