How Berkshire Hathaway Pays
Berkshire Hathaway is a federation of autonomous operating companies, so this report prices a research-normalised B0 to B7 ladder across 30 markets, records a group that pays employees no Berkshire stock at all, Warren Buffett's final $389,488 year at 4.16 to 1, and five sponsor H-1B wage sets.
Band Hierarchy
Berkshire has no grade catalogue, and saying so is the finding rather than a gap in the research. The 2025 annual report states that subsidiaries set their own human-resources policies, and the parent office employs 28 people. The B0 to B7 rows here are a research normalisation built so that a BNSF conductor, a GEICO engineer, a Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance underwriter and an ISCAR machinist can appear on one scale.

Hierarchy qualifications and legacy structures
- BNSF postings disclose selected internal salary bands such as 29, 30 and 31 for supervisors, managers and assistant division engineers, which proves an internal grade structure exists at BNSF but is not enough to reconstruct it or to map it onto any other Berkshire company.
- Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance uses a conventional insurance title ladder of analyst, underwriter, senior underwriter, manager, assistant vice president and vice president, with many employer-posted ranges, but no numeric grade taxonomy was found behind those titles.
- GEICO technology postings use engineer, senior, staff and senior-staff or manager titles with very broad market ranges, indicating a modern dual individual-contributor and management ladder that is not transferable to the manufacturing, railroad or utility companies.
- Northern Powergrid runs a regulated-utility progression with apprenticeship and qualification gates, publishing a trainee rate that steps up on qualification rather than on a grade promotion.
- No public evidence of a post-acquisition grade harmonisation programme was found. The operating model deliberately preserves legacy company titles, union agreements and professional ladders, so a single Berkshire band table would be an invention.
- Berkshire named executive officers are excluded from the band rows entirely. Including a worldwide $22 million cash row in a ladder priced by city calibration factors would push every offshore market towards parity at the top and produce absurd cells, so those figures are carried only in the executive section.

Critical evidence warning
Berkshire Hathaway publishes no salary ranges, band minimums or midpoints for any employee, and the parent explicitly leaves compensation to its operating companies. Every non-executive figure in this report is either a subsidiary job posting, a third-party salary observation or a transparent model built on one, and none of it should be read as a Berkshire pay band.

Global Footprint & Pay Arbitrage
Berkshire reported 387,815 employees at 31 December 2025, roughly 80 percent of them in the United States, working for dozens of separately managed operating companies. Omaha is the anchor column, but it is an accounting anchor rather than a real labour market: only 28 people work there, and the column is the United States portfolio normalisation rather than an Omaha pay scale.

Berkshire publishes operating-company headcount but not city-level headcount, so this catalogue cannot rank offices by employee count. The disclosed 2025 operating-company totals are BNSF 34,880, GEICO 29,541, Pilot 29,285, Marmon 28,387, Precision Castparts 25,168, McLane 24,876, Clayton Homes 22,246, IMC and ISCAR 14,206, NetJets 9,438, Lubrizol 7,690, Northern Powergrid 3,162, Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance 1,481 and the corporate office 28.

- The Omaha column is the United States portfolio normalisation from the source research, not a survey of Omaha employers. It runs from a $50,350 base midpoint at B0 to $475,000 at B7 and is the reference against which every other city is calibrated.
- The strongest employer evidence sits in three cities. Fort Worth carries BNSF's posted engineering ranges and its salary bands 29 to 31, Boston carries Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance's posted ranges with stated annual bonus eligibility, and Chevy Chase carries GEICO's posted technology ranges.
- India runs at roughly 12 to 14 percent of the anchor at B0 and 44 to 47 percent at B7, the widest level-dependent compression in the report. Pune sits above Bangalore and Mumbai because the Lubrizol global capability centre competes for technology and business-services talent.
- Fort Worth is the only market that rises steeply against the anchor with seniority, from 1.34 times at B0 to 1.84 times at B7, reflecting BNSF's posted staff and engineering-manager ranges of $225,000 to $300,000.
- Australia and Canada run the opposite way. Sydney sits at 1.07 times the anchor at B0 and 0.68 times at B7, and Toronto at 1.00 and 0.65, because entry pay in those markets is high relative to the United States while senior specialty-insurance pay is not.
- Named executive officer compensation is a worldwide Omaha disclosure and is deliberately excluded from the location grid. There is no Berkshire executive pay scale in Bangalore, London or Sydney to report.
Model rules
- Every modeled cell is the Omaha portfolio midpoint multiplied by the city base or total factor and then by the 24 August 2026 XE currency snapshot.
- City factors are the ratio of that city's own published base midpoint to the Omaha midpoint at the same band, taken separately at B0 and at B7 and interpolated by seniority in between.
- Total compensation is base plus target variable only. The source research added a notional employer-benefit load of roughly 7 to 13 percent on top when it quoted total cost to company; that load is employer cost rather than pay and has been stripped, so base plus bonus reconciles exactly to the total shown.
- The equity column is zero at every band. That is a real zero backed by the proxy statement, not a missing value.
- Base and total factors are identical for every city because the source research applies the same variable-pay target range to every location. Where a subsidiary in one market pays a materially different bonus target, that is not publicly disclosed.
- Where no direct city observation exists, the cell is marked modeled and should be read as a planning envelope for a subsidiary in that market rather than as a Berkshire benchmark.
Variable Pay & Annual Cash Incentive
Berkshire discloses no bonus plan at any level. The parent proxy says 2025 corporate named-executive compensation was not tied to Berkshire profitability or share price, and operating-company incentive design is left to each subsidiary. The band targets below are research ranges assembled from subsidiary postings that state annual bonus eligibility, not a Berkshire bonus grid, and no payout history exists for any of them.
| Band | Target | Mechanism | Recent payout |
|---|---|---|---|
B0 Entry / frontline | 0% to 5% of base | Role and subsidiary specific. Many frontline roles carry no bonus at all; others run operational or safety incentives rather than an annual plan. | Not publicly disclosed |
B1 Associate / technician | 0% to 8% of base | Role and subsidiary specific, generally on company, business-unit and individual objectives. No group formula is disclosed. | Not publicly disclosed |
B2 Professional | 5% to 12% of base | Annual or role-specific. Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance postings state annual bonus eligibility without publishing a target. | Not publicly disclosed |
B3 Senior professional | 8% to 15% of base | Annual or role-specific, on company, business-unit and individual objectives. Northern Powergrid advertises a team-leader bonus of up to 10 percent at the equivalent scope. | Not publicly disclosed |
B4 Lead / manager | 10% to 20% of base | Annual or role-specific with a delivery or operating component. No published scorecard exists for any subsidiary. | Not publicly disclosed |
B5 Senior manager / AVP | 15% to 30% of base | Annual, weighted towards business-unit results. Because there is no equity, this is the point at which the whole upside of a Berkshire package becomes cash bonus. | Not publicly disclosed |
B6 Director / VP | 20% to 50% of base | Annual, weighted towards business-unit or subsidiary results. Subsidiary practice diverges sharply here between the insurance, railroad, energy and manufacturing companies. | Not publicly disclosed |
B7 SVP / EVP / business head | 30% to over 100% of base | Annual, generally on results attributable to decisions under the manager's control. The proxy says incentives for operating-company leaders may be large but publishes no target, threshold or scorecard. | Not publicly disclosed |
Executive incentive targets — percent of salary
Named-executive outcomes
| Executive | Target | Paid | Attainment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warren E. Buffett | $0 | $0 | No bonus; no target disclosed |
| Gregory E. Abel | $0 | $2,000,000 | Discretionary; no target disclosed |
| Ajit Jain | $0 | $2,000,000 | Discretionary; no target disclosed |
| Marc D. Hamburg | $0 | $1,000,000 | Discretionary; no target disclosed |
Employee payout timing and history
No group payout history exists for any band. Anonymous employee discussion suggests that GEICO's legacy profit-sharing arrangement changed around 2020 and 2021 and that some teams now use performance awards or gain-sharing, but those accounts are not official, vary by job and cannot support a verified GEICO-wide payout percentage. The 0 to 5 percent at B0 rising to over 100 percent at B7 shown here is a research range, and every row of it should be treated as modeled.
Sales and special incentives
Berkshire discloses no quota structure, commission rate, accelerator or draw arrangement for any of its sales organisations, which range from GEICO direct insurance sales to McLane distribution and Pilot travel-centre operations. Quota-carrying roles will therefore be understated by the band targets shown here, and the gap is likely to be largest at GEICO and in the specialty-insurance distribution teams.
Equity — RSUs, PSUs, Options & ESPP
This is the section where Berkshire departs furthest from every other large-cap employer. The 2026 proxy states that the company never intends to use Berkshire stock to compensate employees, and no active parent restricted stock unit, performance share, stock appreciation right or option plan was found. What exists instead is retirement-plan machinery inside individual subsidiaries, plus one employee purchase plan at BNSF.
- The word ESOP means something different inside Berkshire than it does at a technology company. General Re's plan and the subsidiary Berkshire stock funds are qualified retirement-plan assets, and BNSF's offering is a purchase plan. None of them is a recurring grant.
- No BSE, NSE or SEBI machinery applies. Berkshire is a United States issuer listed on the New York Stock Exchange, so the relevant filings are the proxy statement, Forms 4, Forms 11-K and Schedules 13D and 13G rather than any Indian employee-share allotment.
- Because there is no grant pool, there is also no dilution management story, no buyback-to-offset-issuance argument and no unvested equity overhang for employees to model. Berkshire repurchases stock for capital-allocation reasons that have nothing to do with employee compensation.
- An employee who wants Berkshire equity exposure generally has to buy it, either through a subsidiary retirement-plan fund where one exists or on the open market. That is a materially different risk profile from a granted position.
What exists in place of a grant pool
Vesting — common reported employee schedule
A standard four-year, 25 percent per year vesting chart would be false for Berkshire and is deliberately not shown. The reviewed parent and subsidiary disclosures establish no recurring grant programme, so the only vesting concepts in the group are retirement-plan vesting rules governed by each plan document, and Benjamin Moore's disclosed employer contributions are fully vested on contribution.
Eligibility by hierarchy level
- Equity eligibility is not a function of band. At every level from B0 to B7 the answer is the same: no parent grant is identified, and whatever plan exposure an employee has comes from their specific employer and plan eligibility rather than from their seniority.
- Subsidiary CEOs are not an exception. The proxy says their incentives may be large and are generally tied to controllable operating results, but it describes those incentives as compensation arrangements rather than as Berkshire equity.
- Named executive officers receive no equity either. Abel, Jain, Hamburg and Buffett all show a zero in the stock award column of the 2025 Summary Compensation Table, and Abel's 2026 salary arrangement disclosed no equity award.
- Berkshire insiders do hold very large personal stakes, but those are ownership positions built by purchase and inheritance rather than by compensation. Warren Buffett's holdings and his annual charitable transfers are ownership events, not employee equity.
Named executive target equity
| Executive | Target | Units / structure |
|---|---|---|
Warren E. Buffett Chairman; Chief Executive Officer through 31 December 2025 | $0 | No stock award of any kind in 2025. His economic interest in Berkshire is a personal ownership position, and he transferred 12,360,000 Class B shares to charity in June 2025 and converted a further 1,800 Class A shares for charitable gifts in November 2025. |
Gregory E. Abel President and Chief Executive Officer from 1 January 2026 | $0 | No equity award in the 2025 table and none disclosed in the 2026 salary arrangement. He instead bought 21 Class A shares on the open market in March 2026 for about $15.3 million. |
Ajit Jain Vice Chairman, Insurance Operations | $0 | No equity award. His Section 16 activity consists of open-market sales of previously owned shares and small charitable gifts. |
Marc D. Hamburg Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer | $0 | No equity award; his 2025 package is entirely salary, bonus and $30,000 of other compensation. |
Independent directors Board of Directors | $0 | No director equity awards were disclosed. Directors are paid meeting fees only, producing observed 2025 totals of $2,700 to $7,000. |
Executive Compensation
2025 Summary Compensation Table values from the 2026 proxy statement. Every stock award column is zero, so unlike almost every other large-cap disclosure these are cash figures rather than grant-date accounting values. Warren Buffett was chief executive for the whole of 2025 and is shown first; Greg Abel succeeded him on 1 January 2026.
Reading the package
Salary was 25.7 percent of Warren Buffett's 2025 reported total and other compensation, mostly the cost of personal and home security, was 74.3 percent. There was no bonus and no equity. That mix inverts on 1 January 2026: Greg Abel's arrangement is a $25,000,000 annual cash salary, which is 100 percent salary and still zero equity. Berkshire is therefore the rare large-cap where the headline chief-executive number is cash actually received rather than an accounting value that may never be realised.
The comparison is close to meaningless at the total-compensation line and very informative at the mix line. Chubb's package is about 63 percent equity and Travelers' about 58 percent, while Berkshire's is zero percent equity at every level of the company. Buffett's $389,488 is roughly one percent of the Chubb package, and Greg Abel's $25,000,000 cash salary sits between Progressive and Travelers on total but is entirely fixed pay where theirs is largely variable and share-price linked.
Named Executive Officers & Board
The succession that had been anticipated for a decade took effect on 1 January 2026. Greg Abel became President and Chief Executive Officer, Warren Buffett remained Chairman, and Ajit Jain continued as Vice Chairman for insurance operations. The compensation design did not change with the person: Abel's arrangement is cash salary with no equity, exactly as Buffett's was.
The parallel $20,000,000 salaries and identical $2,000,000 bonuses paid to Abel and Jain in 2025 are the clearest evidence that Berkshire sets corporate executive pay by judgement rather than by a benchmarking process. Marc Hamburg's $4,330,000 is the only disclosed pay for a functional corporate officer below vice chairman. Beneath that layer the disclosure stops entirely: no operating-company chief executive's compensation appears in any Berkshire filing, even though several of them run businesses that would be large public companies in their own right.
Board compensation framework
| Element | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| In-person board meeting fee | $900 per meeting | Paid per meeting rather than as an annual retainer, which is unique among large-cap boards. |
| Telephone board meeting fee | $300 per meeting | A reduced fee for meetings held by telephone. |
| Audit Committee service | $1,000 per quarter | The only committee retainer disclosed in the reviewed proxy material. |
| Annual director equity award | $0 | No director equity awards were disclosed. Directors are expected to be substantial shareholders in their own right. |
| Observed 2025 director totals | $2,700 to $7,000 | The full-year range across the board, driven entirely by meeting attendance and audit committee service. |
Berkshire's director fee schedule is roughly two orders of magnitude below the large-cap norm, where a $60,000 cash retainer plus a $250,000 to $350,000 annual equity award is typical. The structure is deliberate: directors are not indemnified by a large fee stream and are expected to hold shares bought with their own money.
Regional heads and other officers
Berkshire discloses no compensation for the chief executives of BNSF, GEICO, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, Precision Castparts, Marmon, McLane, Pilot, Clayton Homes, NetJets, Lubrizol or IMC, nor for any regional or functional head inside them. The proxy states only that incentives for operating-company chief executives may be large and are generally based on results attributable to decisions under each manager's control. Those arrangements are the single largest undisclosed compensation population in this report.
Insider Trades — SEC Forms 3/4/5
Berkshire is New York Stock Exchange listed, so the governing record is SEC Section 16 Forms 3, 4 and 5. Because there is no employee equity programme, there are no restricted stock unit settlements, no performance share certifications and no tax-withholding rows to read. Everything below is an ownership transaction in previously held stock.

Benefits & Perks
Benefits are decentralised by operating company and Berkshire corporate publishes no global catalogue. What follows is the union of what individual subsidiaries disclose plus the statutory floors that apply in each market, and the gaps are recorded as not publicly disclosed rather than filled in.
United States
- Retirement — Subsidiary 401(k) plans with a 100 percent match up to 6 percent. General Re, Benjamin Moore and Lubrizol all disclose a 100 percent match to 6 percent of eligible pay, with Lubrizol auto-enrolling at 6 percent and Benjamin Moore adding a 3 percent special discretionary contribution for selected wage and hourly employees. BNSF employees are additionally covered by Railroad Retirement rather than Social Security alone. [official]
- Medical — Subsidiary medical, dental and vision plans. Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance postings also list short and long-term disability, life and accidental death cover, flexible spending and health reimbursement accounts and an employee assistance programme. BNSF lists health savings account contributions and family-building support. Plan tiers, premiums and carriers are not published. [official]
- Equity — BNSF employee stock purchase plan for Class B shares. The only purchase plan identified anywhere in the group. Purchase price, discount and holding rules are not publicly disclosed, so no value can be attributed to it. [official]
- Leave — Paid time off and paid parental leave at BHSI. Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance lists paid time off, tuition reimbursement and paid parental leave in its postings. Exact day counts by service band are not published by any subsidiary. [official]
- Growth — Tuition reimbursement and paid training. BNSF and BHSI both disclose tuition reimbursement, and BNSF adds paid training and leadership development. No group learning platform, certification budget or eligibility rule is public. [official]
Global programs
- Structure — No global benefits catalogue exists. Berkshire corporate does not publish one, and the 2025 annual report confirms that subsidiaries set their own human-resources policies. Two employees at two Berkshire companies in the same city can be on entirely different plans. [official]
- Equity — No employee stock compensation anywhere in the group. The 2026 proxy states that Berkshire never intends to use Berkshire stock to compensate employees. The only share-related benefits are subsidiary retirement-plan funds and the BNSF purchase plan. [official]
- Growth — Learning and tuition support at BNSF and BHSI. Both disclose tuition reimbursement, mentoring and leadership development, but no global platform name, budget or universal eligibility rule is public. [official]
- Working model — Subsidiary and role specific. Hybrid and remote arrangements, sabbaticals and internal mobility are decided by each operating company. No Berkshire-wide entitlement was found, and a large share of the workforce is in roles that cannot be done remotely at all. [npd]
Benefit fields not publicly quantified
The following were requested and are not comprehensively public across Berkshire's subsidiaries and are therefore recorded as not publicly disclosed rather than inferred: insurer and provider names and coverage limits, India family-floater values and parent cover, paternity-leave weeks in every market, exact paid-time-off schedules by service band, universal National Pension System contributions, meal, cab and telephone allowances, sabbatical policies, certification-platform names, relocation formulas and global remote-work entitlements.
Performance Review & Pay Progression
No consolidated performance or pay-progression system exists. The parent reports a total employee count and nothing else about how those employees are reviewed, rated, promoted or paid up. Every element below is an operating-company decision that Berkshire does not aggregate or publish.
Not publicly disclosed
Modeled promotion planning timeline
| Band | Years to next scope | Promotion hike | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| B0 | 1–3 years to B1 where a progression path exists | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| B1 | 2–4 years to B2 | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| B2 | 3–5 years to B3 | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| B3 | 3–5 years to B4 | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| B4 | 3–6 years to B5 | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| B5 | 4–7 years to B6 | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| B6 | 4–8 years to B7 where a role exists | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
| B7 | Terminal band for most careers below subsidiary chief executive | Not disclosed | Modeled planning interval |
The only defensible progression guide is the experience window attached to each research band: B0 to B2 generally covers 0 to 6 years, B3 to B5 roughly 5 to 15 years, B6 and B7 12 to 25 years and more, and subsidiary chief executive roles sit above that. These windows overlap heavily because they span railroad operations, insurance underwriting, aerospace manufacturing and consumer products, and they are not promotion guarantees.
Pay progression evidence
Modeled progression, not Berkshire policy, and weaker than the equivalent statement for a single-employer company. Moving from B2 to B3 implies roughly a 31 percent step in the portfolio midpoint, B3 to B4 about 24 percent, B4 to B5 about 26 percent, B5 to B6 about 27 percent and B6 to B7 about 83 percent, but these are differences between band midpoints rather than observed promotion increases. Because there is no equity anywhere in the structure, a Berkshire promotion changes only base and target bonus, so the compounding effect of an equity refresh that dominates senior technology-sector progression simply does not exist here.
H-1B / LCA Visa Footprint — United States
Berkshire Hathaway does not sponsor visas; its subsidiaries do, under their own names. The five sponsors below file separately and the aggregators index them over different fiscal windows, so their medians cannot be merged into a single Berkshire number. Every figure is a labour condition application wage, which is base salary only and is not the same as an approved petition.
Dataset summary
| Dataset | Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Elevate Staffing BHSI employer profile | 41 certified FY2021 to FY2025 applications at a $150,000 median | Lower quartile $125,000 and upper quartile $172,500. The 100 percent figure it reports is the share of certified applications meeting the prevailing wage, not a USCIS approval rate. |
| H1BData.info BHSI Boston index | 18 records at a $160,000 median | A Boston-only cut of the same sponsor, which reads $10,000 above the sponsor aggregate because it excludes lower-paid worksites. Quartiles are not shown. |
| Ellis GEICO sponsor profile | 462 filings in a 2025 index at a $148,000 median | Other indexes using narrower position windows produce different counts and medians for the same sponsor, so the window is preserved rather than reconciled away. |
| WARNTracker BNSF Railway | 12 positions across FY2025 to FY2026 at a $171,513 median | Lower quartile $149,225 and upper quartile $243,750. The wide spread reflects a mix of senior engineering and assistant-director roles in a very small sample. |
| H1BData.info Lubrizol Corporation | 8 records in a 2025 index at a $111,010 median | The lower quartile equals the median because several Wickliffe roles were filed at exactly the same wage. The upper quartile is $127,837. |
| Second bundle location sample | 22 records at San Ramon, California at a $122,500 median | A historical location sample rather than an FY2026-only cut, and the sponsoring Berkshire entity is not identified in the source. Treated as the weakest row in this table. |

Selected title / worksite records
| Title | Worksite | Proffered wage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senior Software Engineer | BNSF Railway, Fort Worth, Texas | $130,601 | A 2025 record. It sits close to the B3 portfolio midpoint scaled to Fort Worth, which is a useful cross-check on the city factor. |
| Senior Specialist, Intermodal Analytics | BNSF Railway, Fort Worth, Texas | $87,700 | The lowest BNSF record in the 2025 set, showing how wide the range is inside one sponsor and one city. |
| Assistant Director, Network Control Systems | BNSF Railway, Fort Worth, Texas | $162,027 | A management record that corresponds to BNSF's disclosed salary bands 29 to 31 for supervisors and assistant division engineers. |
| SAP ABAP Team Lead | Lubrizol, Wickliffe, Ohio | $130,832 | The second-highest Lubrizol record; the highest among the eight indexed was $149,947. |
| Clustered Wickliffe technology roles | Lubrizol, Wickliffe, Ohio | $111,010 | Several 2025 records were filed at exactly this wage, which is why the Lubrizol lower quartile and median coincide. |
| BHSI certified-application distribution | Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance, all United States worksites | $125,000 lower quartile, $150,000 median, $172,500 upper quartile | Across 41 certified applications from FY2021 to FY2025, the tightest distribution of any Berkshire sponsor. |
Reading the data correctly
- A certified labour condition application is not an approved H-1B petition. The 100 percent figure reported for Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance means every certified filing met or exceeded the prevailing wage; it is not a USCIS adjudication rate, and no adjudication rate was located for any Berkshire sponsor.
- There is no consolidated Berkshire visa filer. Anyone searching for Berkshire Hathaway as a sponsor will find almost nothing, because the filings sit under GEICO, BNSF Railway, Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company, The Lubrizol Corporation and other subsidiary names.
- The sponsors use different fiscal windows. BHSI is indexed across FY2021 to FY2025, GEICO on a 2025 index, BNSF across FY2025 to FY2026 and Lubrizol on a 2025 index, so the medians in this table are not measured over a common period.
- Sample sizes are small everywhere except GEICO. Twelve BNSF positions and eight Lubrizol records cannot support a reliable percentile estimate, and the quartiles shown for them should be read as descriptive rather than statistical.
- Every wage here is base salary only. It excludes bonus entirely, and there is no equity to exclude, which makes Berkshire visa wages closer to total compensation than they would be at an employer that grants stock.
- Sponsor-name choices materially change the counts. Indexes that search on Government Employees Insurance Company return different results from those that search on GEICO, and the report preserves each source's own extraction rather than reconciling them into one number.
Key Nuances & Insights
Berkshire's operating companies independently set compensation, benefits, titles and performance systems. A groupwide band ladder does not exist in public disclosure, and the 2025 annual report says so directly. Every number in this report that spans more than one subsidiary is a research construction.
Omaha employs 28 of the 387,815 people in the group. That is the single most important fact for interpreting anything labelled Berkshire compensation, because the corporate office is not a proxy for a railroad, an insurer or a machine-tool manufacturer.
Parent executives receive cash without Berkshire equity. The structure minimises dilution and separates corporate stewardship from the share price, which is the opposite of the alignment logic every peer proxy uses to justify equity-heavy packages.
Warren Buffett's $100,000 salary and $389,488 total gave a 4.16 to 1 ratio that says almost nothing about how Berkshire pays. Greg Abel's $25,000,000 cash salary will produce a completely different ratio, and no official completed-year figure has been filed yet.
The proxy says incentives for operating-company chief executives may be large and are generally tied to results within each manager's control. This is the largest undisclosed compensation population in the group and the reason the band table stops at B7.
General Re's ESOP and the subsidiary Berkshire stock funds are qualified retirement-plan vehicles, and BNSF's offering is a purchase plan. None of them is a recurring grant, and presenting any of them as an equivalent of a restricted stock unit programme would be wrong.
At a technology employer a senior promotion is dominated by the equity refresh. At Berkshire a promotion changes base and target bonus and nothing else, so long-run compensation growth is slower and far less volatile, and it is entirely uncorrelated with the share price.
BNSF postings expose selected salary bands such as 29 to 31 and BHSI uses a recognisable insurance title ladder, but no complete cross-subsidiary mapping is public. The B0 to B7 ladder here is a research normalisation and is labelled as one on every row.
There is no large Berkshire delivery centre. India compensation is a composite of Lubrizol's Pune capability centre and Mumbai operations and of IMC and TaeguTec in Bangalore, so the onshore and offshore framing used for information-technology services companies does not apply.
United States employer postings provide the strongest evidence, followed by BHSI Canada. Australia, the United Kingdom and Germany rely more on employee submissions, and much of Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Latin America requires modelled estimates.
India rises from about 12 percent of the anchor at B0 to 44 percent at B7 and Fort Worth rises from 1.34 to 1.84 times, while Sydney falls from 1.07 to 0.68 and Toronto from 1.00 to 0.65. A single flat country multiplier would misstate every one of those markets.
Anonymous market commentary can suggest compression or hiring premiums, particularly in GEICO technology and specialty insurance, but no auditable Berkshire-wide dataset supports a quantified lateral premium.
The parent reports total employees and nothing else. There is no group attrition rate, rating distribution, hike cycle or promotion matrix, and these remain subsidiary human-resources matters that Berkshire does not aggregate.
$900 an in-person meeting, $300 a telephone meeting and $1,000 a quarter for audit committee service produced observed 2025 director totals of $2,700 to $7,000, against a large-cap norm nearer $400,000 including equity.
Research control
Against Chubb, Travelers, Progressive and Markel, Berkshire's chief executive total for 2025 was roughly one percent of the largest peer package, and its 4.16 to 1 pay ratio is the lowest in the comparison by a very wide margin. Greg Abel's $25,000,000 cash salary moves the total between Progressive and Travelers while keeping the equity component at zero, so the structural difference survives the succession even though the number does not. On the employee side there is no meaningful group comparison to make, because the relevant peer for a BNSF conductor is another railroad, for a GEICO adjuster another insurer and for an ISCAR machinist another tooling manufacturer.
Evidence classification
| Label | Meaning | Examples and permitted use |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | A Berkshire or subsidiary filing, an official subsidiary benefit page, an official job posting or a government rule. | Executive and director pay, the no-employee-stock policy, retirement-plan mechanics, employee counts, the BNSF and BHSI posted ranges and the statutory benefit floors. |
| Reported | A named third-party dataset with observable records, chiefly employee salary submissions and the labour condition application indexes. | The BHSI, Precision Castparts, AltaLink, Gen Re and Lubrizol India city observations and the whole visa section. |
| Modeled | The Omaha portfolio midpoint multiplied by a city calibration factor and foreign exchange, inside a planning envelope. | Every band row in this report and every city without a direct observation. |
| Not publicly disclosed | No source in either research bundle supports a figure. | Recorded as such rather than estimated, which for Berkshire covers more ground than for any other company in this series. |

Known gaps and diligence before relying on a cell
- 1Berkshire named executive officers are deliberately excluded from the band rows. A worldwide $22 million cash figure placed at the top of a ladder that is priced by city calibration factors would drag every offshore market towards parity at the senior end and produce cells such as an India business head on a United States vice chairman's salary. The four named executives are carried in the executive section instead, and the band table stops at B7.
- 2The band table also stops short of the operating-company chief executive layer, which sits between B7 and the parent named executives. Berkshire discloses nothing about it, so inventing a row would have been the only way to include it.
- 3The source research quoted a total cost to company that adds a notional employer-benefit load of roughly 7 to 13 percent on top of base and target variable. That is employer cost rather than pay, so it has been stripped and every total here is base plus target bonus, which reconciles exactly.
- 4The two research bundles use different foreign exchange snapshots, 24 August 2026 and 25 August 2026, and disagree on the rupee at 95.774733 against 95.4125. This report standardises on the 24 August 2026 XE table because every United States dollar conversion in the larger bundle's location tables was computed from it.
- 5The two bundles also disagree on the top of the ladder. The larger one normalises to B0 through B8 with B8 as subsidiary chief executive and Berkshire named executive combined; the smaller one splits that into a B8 regional and subsidiary executive tier and a B9 Berkshire corporate tier. This report uses the larger bundle's B0 to B7 employee rows and treats the executive layers separately.
- 6The larger bundle covers 40 markets and this report carries 30. The ten omitted are Brisbane, Perth, Vancouver, Munich, Frankfurt, Madrid, Milan, Dublin, Bloomington and Bethel, all of which were modelled rather than observed and most of which duplicate the factor of a retained city in the same country.
- 7Base and total calibration factors are identical for every city because the source research applies the same variable-pay target range to every location. If a subsidiary in a particular market runs materially different bonus targets, that is not publicly disclosed and this report cannot show it.
- 8Insider gifts and share-class conversions cannot be represented in the trade table because the schema has no gift category. Warren Buffett's June 2025 transfer of 12,360,000 Class B shares and his November 2025 conversion of 1,800 Class A shares are described in the insider context notes instead.
- 9The two bundles record different Ajit Jain sales, a 200 Class A share sale on 9 September 2024 at an average $695,417.65 and a 15,000 Class B share sale on 26 September 2025 at $500.998. Both are retained as separate events because the filings are separate.
- 10Berkshire discloses no geographic revenue split in either bundle, so the regional revenue panel is omitted entirely rather than repurposed.
- 11No group salary hike, freeze, campus offer revision or off-cycle correction was located for any year, so the news section carries structural and governance events rather than pay actions.

Recent News & Workforce Trend
Berkshire's 2026 has been dominated by a chief executive succession and by the reaffirmation of a compensation philosophy rather than by any pay action. No group salary hike, freeze or correction was announced in any reviewed source, and none would be expected from a parent that leaves those decisions to its operating companies.
The group has shrunk by about 8,700 people over two years, a little over 2 percent, without any consolidated restructuring disclosure. Because Berkshire reports only a total and a set of operating-company counts, the shape of that decline can be inferred only where a subsidiary has been reported on separately, as GEICO was. No group attrition rate is published, so the split between voluntary and involuntary departures is unknown.
The compensation discussion restates the policy and confirms that subsidiary chief executive incentives remain tied to controllable operating results. It also discloses the 2025 named-executive table, the $93,709 median employee and the 4.16 to 1 ratio.
Headcount fell from about 392,400 in 2024 and 396,500 in 2023. The report restates that operating companies set their own human-resources policies.
The board-approved succession took effect and Warren Buffett remained Chairman. The Form 8-K/A set the annual salary in cash and disclosed no equity award, so the compensation design did not change with the person.
General Re, Benjamin Moore and Lubrizol Forms 11-K detail cash matches and Berkshire stock fund holdings where applicable. These are retirement plans rather than groupwide restricted stock unit programmes.
1,800 Class A shares were converted at the 1 to 1,500 ratio into 2,700,000 Class B shares, which were gifted to charitable organisations. It is an ownership event and not compensation, and it does not appear in any pay table.
The centre expands Berkshire's India technology and business-services footprint through a subsidiary rather than through a parent delivery centre, and it is the reason Pune prices above Bangalore and Mumbai in this report.
Public reporting tied a material portion of Berkshire's employee decline to GEICO reductions. No group-level salary freeze or hike percentage was disclosed alongside it.
