Band Hierarchy

Anthropic confirms that it runs a series of internal levels and assigns candidates to one, but it has never published the level names, numbers, salary matrices or promotion gates. The F0, P1 to P4, T1 to T5, S1, S2, M1 and M2 codes used here are an analytical role taxonomy built from official job postings and Levels.fyi records, not Anthropic band names.

Chief Executive Officer and President
Dario Amodei as Chief Executive Officer and Daniela Amodei as President
Named in company communications. No salary, bonus, equity grant, perquisite or total compensation figure exists in the public record.
C-suite
Krishna Rao as Chief Financial Officer and Mike Krieger as Chief Product Officer
Identified through company announcements and org-chart reporting. No standardised officer compensation table is published.
Vice President and Senior Vice President
Functional and regional leadership including a general manager for Australia and New Zealand
Visible in the job board and announcements. A current standard Executive Vice President layer was not located in the reviewed role catalogue.
Board and Long-Term Benefit Trust
Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, Yasmin Razavi, Reed Hastings, Chris Liddell and Vas Narasimhan, with trustees Neil Buddy Shah, Richard Fontaine and Ben Bernanke
Membership is published on the company page. Retainers, meeting fees, committee fees, equity awards and trustee compensation are not.
VerifiedOnly the posted salary ranges and the named board and executive roles carry a company disclosure. Every level code, every cluster boundary and every total-compensation figure below the executive layer is reconstructed.

Track divergence

F0 to P1
The only public early-career pay reference is the Fellows programme at $3,850 a week in the United States, £2,310 in the United Kingdom and C$4,300 in Canada. No permanent graduate or fresher band was located, and Anthropic's careers page says it does not currently offer internships.
T1 to T2 and P2 to P4
The technical and professional tracks separate here. Reported technical packages are already a third equity at the entry software-engineer label and about 45 percent at Senior, while the professional postings disclose cash only, so the two sets of totals are not measuring the same thing.
T3 to T4 and M1 to M2
Equity, not management, is the lever. Annualized stock reaches about 56 percent of the reported Lead package and about 67 percent of the Staff package, while the two sampled manager postings show that function moves the cash range far more than the layer does.
T5 and above
The highest posted cash in the entire record is the $850,000 top of a Pretraining Scaling research range, and Anthropic publishes no grant to sit beside it. Above the Staff+ zone the record goes dark: Director, Vice President and C-suite pay is not publicly disclosed in any form.

Hierarchy qualifications and legacy structures

  • Anthropic's chief executive has publicly described a series of levels, assignment of candidates to a level and a principle of not negotiating that assigned level case by case in the interest of internal fairness. That confirms a level architecture exists; it does not reveal the codes.
  • Current postings repeatedly say that required years of experience will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position, which is why this report records role requirements rather than promotion clocks.
  • Member of Technical Staff is the title that appears most often in immigration filings and is deliberately broad. Visa records show it spanning from $133,952 to $1,380,000 of base salary, so treating it as one level would destroy all resolution.
  • The Levels.fyi labels Software Engineer, Senior, Lead and Staff are platform-defined. They are used here because they are the only source that splits a package into base, stock and bonus, not because Anthropic has confirmed them.
  • No merger-derived or predecessor band system was identified. Anthropic was built as a standalone company, so there is no legacy grade map to reconcile.

Peer-level mapping

BandArchetypePeer mappingCaveat
F0Anthropic FellowResearch residency or fellowship, roughly Google L3 to L4 entry scopeA four-month fixed-term programme, not a permanent employee band.Anthropic Fellows Program posting: $3,850 a week in the United States, £2,310 in the United Kingdom and C$4,300 in Canada, annualized here at the weekly rate even though the programme runs four months. A compute budget of about $15,000 a month is provided and Anthropic says 25 to 50 percent of prior cohorts received full-time offers.
P1Specialist / Business Systems AnalystEntry to mid specialist or analyst, roughly Google L4 scopeA single posting can span more than one internal Anthropic level, so the mapping is directional.Midpoint of the $131,040 to $210,000 Product Support Specialist posting. The London twin, Business Systems Analyst, posted £130,000 to £165,000. No grant size is published for this cluster, so the total is cash only and understates the package.
T1Software Engineer / Member of Technical StaffGoogle L4, Meta E4Member of Technical Staff is a deliberately broad title that spans several internal levels.Levels.fyi entry software-engineer stack of $250,000 base and $117,000 annualized stock. Anthropic's own Software Engineer, Human Data Interface posting shows $320,000 to $405,000 of base, well above the crowdsourced base, because posting titles and platform labels do not align level for level.
S1Growth Account ExecutiveMid-market or growth account executiveThe posted number is On Target Earnings, so it is not comparable with a non-sales base salary.Midpoint of the $222,800 to $380,000 Growth Account Executive, AI Native posting. Anthropic states that a sales range is On Target Earnings, meaning base plus target incentive, and does not publish the split, so the whole amount sits in the cash column here rather than being split into base and bonus.
P2Product & Programme ManagerMid-level product manager or programme managerAnthropic titles are scope oriented and broad, so a single title covers a wide pay span.Midpoint of the combined $195,000 to $385,000 span across the Executive Services Program Manager posting at $195,000 to $245,000 and the Product Manager, Business Technology posting at $305,000 to $385,000. Levels.fyi separately reports a $406,700 Product Manager median total, and the difference is annualized equity that Anthropic does not publish.
S2Enterprise Account ExecutiveEnterprise or strategic account executiveThe posted number is On Target Earnings, so it is not comparable with a non-sales base salary.Midpoint of the $290,000 to $360,000 Enterprise Account Executive, State and Local Sales posting. The Bengaluru equivalents post base salary rather than On Target Earnings, at ₹12,499,200 to ₹16,272,000 for a Startup Account Executive and ₹16,272,000 to ₹20,198,400 for an Enterprise Account Executive.
P3Data Scientist / Lead Data ScientistSenior data scientist, roughly Google L5Anthropic blends research and engineering, so a data title can sit on either track.Midpoint of the combined $285,000 to $460,000 span across the Data Scientist posting at $285,000 to $380,000 and the Data Scientist, Developer Productivity posting at $380,000 to $460,000. Levels.fyi reports a $442,775 Data Scientist median total, the gap again being undisclosed equity.
P4Counsel / Technical Program ManagerSenior professional, roughly Google L5 to L6No official senior-equals-level-N table exists at Anthropic.Midpoint of the $365,000 to $435,000 Technical Program Manager, Data Center Infrastructure posting. The Dublin Safety and Security Counsel, EMEA posting at €210,000 to €280,000 and the Business Insider commercial-counsel visa range of $198,765 to $320,000 sit in the same cluster.
T2Senior Software Engineer / Research EngineerGoogle L5, Meta E5Anthropic expects engineers to research and researchers to engineer, so the scientist-above-engineer ladder does not apply.Levels.fyi Senior Software Engineer stack of $328,000 base and $263,000 annualized stock. Anthropic's own comparable postings are Research Engineer / Scientist, Alignment at $350,000 to $500,000 and Research Engineer, Interpretability at $315,000 to $560,000 of base salary.
M1Engineering Manager / Functional ManagerGoogle M1, Meta M1Function drives the range far more than the layer does; the two sampled manager postings barely overlap.Midpoint of the combined $285,000 to $560,000 span across the Engineering Manager, Inference posting at $425,000 to $560,000 and the Manager, Corporate Network Engineering posting at $285,000 to $325,000. Levels.fyi reports a $398,000 Software Engineering Manager median total on a small sample, which is below the posted base midpoint.
M2Head / Senior ManagerSenior manager or head of functionA head title at Anthropic can be a senior individual contributor, a manager or an external representative.Midpoint of the $330,000 to $395,000 Head of Vulnerability Disclosure and Security Community posting. It sits below the Engineering Manager row because security-community scope is priced differently from frontier inference engineering, not because the layer is junior.
T3Lead Software EngineerGoogle L5 to L6, Meta E5 to E6Lead is a Levels.fyi platform label; Anthropic does not confirm it as an internal level name.Levels.fyi Lead Software Engineer stack of $341,000 base, $434,000 annualized stock and about $1,700 of bonus. This is the only band in the whole record with a non-zero reported cash bonus outside sales. One bundle rounds the same package to $777,000 and the other to $779,000.
T4Staff Software EngineerGoogle L6, Meta E6Staff scope varies widely across teams; the posted staff ranges span $320,000 to $625,000 of base alone.Levels.fyi Staff Software Engineer stack of $405,000 base and $843,000 annualized stock for $1,248,333. The base matches the floor of Anthropic's own staff postings exactly, which run $405,000 to $485,000 for multiple teams, $405,000 to $605,000 for Environments and $405,000 to $625,000 for Code RL.
T5Staff+ / Frontier Research ICGoogle L7 and above, Meta E7 and abovePrincipal is a peer-company analogy and is not a confirmed Anthropic title.Midpoint of the combined $405,000 to $850,000 span across the Staff+ Software Engineer, Developer Experience posting at $405,000 to $485,000 and the Research Engineer, Pretraining Scaling posting at $350,000 to $850,000. This is the highest posted cash in the record, but no grant is published for it, so the row is cash only and reads below the crowdsourced Staff total, which is roughly two thirds equity.

Critical evidence warning

Anthropic is private and publishes no salary band, no band minimum, midpoint or maximum, no promotion matrix and no equity grant table. Every band code on this page is an analytical cluster. The base figures marked Verified come from official job postings, which are real but are role ranges rather than company bands, and the totals marked Reported come from employee submissions that Anthropic has neither confirmed nor filed.

Global Footprint & Pay Arbitrage

San Francisco is the pay anchor and by far the largest concentration of staff. United States postings usually quote one range across San Francisco, Seattle, New York and Washington, DC, so those four markets share a factor of 1. Every other market is calibrated only where Anthropic has actually published a local salary range.

Anthropic has verified offices in Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, Zurich, Paris, Munich and Milan, and a verified India office in Bengaluru. Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul and Singapore are deliberately excluded from the pay table because no Anthropic salary range has been published in Australian dollars, yen, won or Singapore dollars, and converting a United States range into those currencies would invent a local band. Auckland and Dubai appear in one bundle only as regional coverage placeholders with no office located, and are excluded here for the same reason.

  • The San Francisco column is the anchor. Technical rows come from Levels.fyi United States records, which do not distinguish between United States cities, and every professional, sales and management row is the midpoint of an official Anthropic posting that applies across the listed United States cities.
  • London is the only market with a deep posted record outside the United States. Sampled ranges run £130,000 to £165,000 for a Business Systems Analyst, £190,000 to £240,000 for a Product Manager, £260,000 to £370,000 for Alignment research, £325,000 to £485,000 for a Staff Software Engineer and £260,000 to £630,000 for Pretraining Scaling research.
  • Converted at the 25 August 2026 rate, the London Alignment and Pretraining ranges land within about 1 percent of their United States twins while the London Product Manager range sits about 15 percent below, which is why London carries separate junior and senior factors rather than one multiplier.
  • Dublin is calibrated from four euro postings: Senior Software Engineer, Inference and Staff Software Engineer, AI Reliability at €235,000 to €295,000, Applied AI Architect at €190,000 to €215,000 and Commercial Counsel, EMEA at €165,000 to €210,000. The same euro range covering both Senior and Staff scope is what produces the falling base factor up the ladder.
  • Bengaluru is calibrated only from two account-executive postings at ₹12,499,200 to ₹16,272,000 and ₹16,272,000 to ₹20,198,400 of base salary. That is roughly 0.55 of the United States sales anchor, and it is a go-to-market observation, not a technical one, so the factor is carried flat rather than interpolated up the ladder.

Model rules

  • A posted annual salary is treated as base salary unless the posting says the range is On Target Earnings. Sales rows are therefore never plotted as base pay.
  • Where a band has a Levels.fyi base, stock and bonus stack, the total is that stack. Where a band has only posted cash, the total equals the base and is explicitly cash only, because Anthropic confirms equity exists but publishes no grant size for that cluster.
  • Equity is modelled as dollar-denominated and location-neutral, since Anthropic publishes no local grant schedule. That assumption is what makes the Dublin and euro-area total factors rise up the ladder while their base factors fall.
  • Paris, Munich and Milan carry the Dublin euro-area factor because they share a currency and an in-currency observation exists. No factor is carried across a currency boundary, which is why Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul and Singapore are excluded from the pay table entirely.
  • No notional employer benefit load is added anywhere. A total compensation cell is base plus target incentive plus annualized equity, and nothing else. The $500 a month wellness stipend, education stipend and home-office stipend are benefits, not pay, and are recorded in the benefits section.

Variable Pay & Annual Cash Incentive

Sales is the only track with a defined variable-pay basis at Anthropic: postings state that a sales range is On Target Earnings, meaning base salary plus target commission. For every other role there is no published target percentage, no formula, no cadence and no payout history, and the employee-reported record shows almost no cash bonus at all.

ModeledVerifiedThere is no public executive incentive plan for Anthropic. A private company has no obligation to file a Compensation Discussion and Analysis, and the confidential draft S-1 announced in June 2026 is a submission rather than a public registration statement, so it published no Summary Compensation Table, no target bonus schedule and no performance metrics. Any percentage quoted for an Anthropic executive bonus would be an invention.

Employee payout timing and history

No reliable evidence supports a 10, 15, 20 or 30 percent target bonus at any Anthropic level. No company, business-unit, utilisation, client-satisfaction or individual-rating weighting has been published, and no 2024, 2025 or 2026 payout percentage exists in the record. The strongest signal in the other direction is the employee-reported data, which shows $0 of bonus at the entry, senior and staff software-engineer labels and about $1,700 at the lead label, consistent with a high-salary, high-equity, low-bonus architecture. That is an observation about a sample, not a published zero-bonus policy.

Sales and special incentives

Sales postings are the one place Anthropic defines a variable-pay basis, and they define it clearly: the published range is On Target Earnings and therefore already contains the target commission. The base-to-commission split, quota-setting method, accelerators, draw structure and payout timing are all unpublished. India is the exception in reverse: the Bengaluru Startup Account Executive and Enterprise Account Executive postings quote base salary in rupees and add that the package includes equity and may include incentive compensation, so a rupee figure and a dollar On Target Earnings figure must never be compared directly.

Equity — RSUs, PSUs, Options & ESPP

Anthropic runs a real, sophisticated private-company equity programme and publishes almost nothing about it. The instruments are confirmed as stock options and RSUs, the administration platform is confirmed as Shareworks, and a 1:1 match on donated equity is confirmed. The plan name, authorised pool, utilisation, strike-price formula, minimum eligible level, refresh cadence and grant matrix are all unavailable.

Active; plan name and approval date not publicly disclosed

A current Global Senior Equity Program Manager posting establishes that the role oversees grant processing, option exercises, cancellations and cap-table management, manages equity transactions with tax and payroll integration, supports international equity frameworks and prepares for public-company requirements, and requires strong knowledge of both stock options and RSUs. That is direct evidence that both instruments are in use.

Anthropic is private, has no quoted share price and no purchase plan of any kind was located in either research bundle. Both 2026 research bundles
  • A private financing valuation is not a share price. The $965 billion post-money figure from the May 2026 Series H prices a preferred round; it does not establish the fair market value of common stock, an option strike price or a tender price.
  • Valuing a grant would require, at minimum, the number of underlying units, the security class and conversion rights, the fully diluted share count, the preferred liquidation preferences, the strike or purchase price, the vesting and post-termination exercise terms, the transfer and tender restrictions and a current common-share fair market value. None of those is public.
  • Levels.fyi offer submissions describe a 2025 senior offer at roughly $1.0 million of total grant and about $250,000 of annualized value, structured as option value in year one and RSU value later, and an older 2024 offer at roughly $960,000 of option grant value with a reported strike price. Those are individual unaudited submissions, useful for structure and useless as a policy.
  • Anthropic confidentially submitted a draft registration statement on 1 June 2026. If and when a public S-1 appears, stock-plan exhibits, option overhang, RSU obligations, executive equity and dilution may finally become disclosable, and this section should be rebuilt from that filing.

The four-year, one-year-cliff-then-monthly pattern above is what Levels.fyi reports across Anthropic submissions. It is the single most commonly repeated equity fact about the company and it has never been confirmed by Anthropic. Individual offers can and do differ, particularly across instruments, countries and hire dates, and the mix of options and RSUs within one package appears to have changed over time in the self-reported offer record.

Eligibility by hierarchy level

  • Anthropic states that full-time compensation includes competitive salary and equity, and every non-sales posting reviewed describes equity as part of the package. That establishes breadth but not a minimum eligible level.
  • There is no published grant table by level, no refresh cadence, no eligibility threshold and no country matrix. The band-by-band equity policy in both research bundles is a column of Not publicly disclosed entries, deliberately, because any precise grant-size range would be an invention.
  • Employee-reported annualized stock values give the only observable curve: about $117,000 at the entry software-engineer label, $263,000 at Senior, $434,000 at Lead and $843,000 at Staff. Those are aggregates from a self-selected sample and cannot be multiplied by four to infer a contractual grant.
  • India postings are the exception in the other direction: the Bengaluru account-executive listings explicitly say the package includes equity, which confirms that equity travels to the India entity even though no rupee grant value has ever been published.
  • No performance share unit programme and no stock appreciation right programme was identified in either research bundle.

VerifiedThere is no employee stock purchase plan, no discount and no lookback, because there is no public market in Anthropic stock. The practical equity questions for an Anthropic employee are therefore different from those at a listed employer: what fraction of the grant is options versus RSUs, what the strike price was set at, what happens to RSUs that have no liquidity event, whether a tender offer will be run, and what a post-listing lockup and any mandatory preset trading plan would do to timing. None of those has a published answer as of August 2026.

Named Executive Officers & Board

Anthropic's public leadership record is a list of names, not a list of numbers. The company page identifies the board and the Long-Term Benefit Trust trustees, and company announcements identify the chief executive, president and functional C-suite, but no compensation figure attaches to any of them.

Publicly identified senior leadership includes Dario Amodei as Chief Executive Officer, Daniela Amodei as President, Krishna Rao as Chief Financial Officer and Mike Krieger as Chief Product Officer, alongside regional leadership such as the general manager for Australia and New Zealand appointed with the Sydney office. A current standard Executive Vice President layer was not located in the reviewed role catalogue, so the assumption that Vice President is below Senior Vice President is below Executive Vice President should not be applied to Anthropic. Compensation for every one of these roles is not publicly disclosed, and the confidential draft S-1 announced on 1 June 2026 is a submission to the Securities and Exchange Commission rather than a public filing, so it published no tables.

Founder supervoting proposalReported, not adoptedReuters reported on 18 August 2026 that founder supervoting stock was under consideration ahead of a potential listing. Plans were reported as subject to change.

Anthropic is a Delaware public benefit corporation rather than a listed issuer, so it files no annual report on director compensation and no say-on-pay proposal. Everything above that is not a name is unavailable, and the absence is a disclosure-regime fact rather than evidence that no arrangement exists.

Regional heads and other officers

Anthropic publishes no compensation figure for any officer, regional general manager or country lead, and files no proxy statement, so there is no equivalent of a named-executive table. Regional leadership is identified by role in the company's own announcements — including the general manager appointed for Australia and New Zealand alongside the Sydney office — but every pay figure for those roles is not publicly disclosed.

Insider Trades — SEC Forms 3/4/5

There are no insider trades to show. Anthropic is private, so SEC Forms 3, 4 and 5 do not yet apply to its officers and directors, the Indian SEBI insider-trading and substantial-acquisition framework is not applicable to a United States private company, and Australian director-interest notices are not applicable either.

Reading guide

No Form 4 ledger existsSection 16 reporting begins with registration of a class of equity securities. Anthropic's draft registration statement was announced as confidential on 1 June 2026, so no public-company insider transaction history exists for any officer or director.
Employee exercises and tenders are privateIndividual option exercises, share sales, exercise prices and transaction values are not disclosed in any complete public ledger. Secondary liquidity activity has been reported for large private artificial-intelligence companies generally, but not as a person-by-person Anthropic table.
Financings are the closest public substituteThe relevant public events are the $13 billion Series F at $183 billion post-money in September 2025, the $30 billion Series G at $380 billion in February 2026 and the $65 billion Series H at $965 billion in May 2026. These are company financings and must never be presented as employee trades.
A future listing would change this entirelyIf Anthropic completes a public offering, Forms 3 and 4 would begin, stock-plan exhibits and option overhang would become visible, and Reuters has reported that mandatory preset employee trading plans are under consideration to manage the transition.

Benefits & Perks

Anthropic publishes one global benefits list on its careers page and no country-by-country rewards portal, so the company-disclosed rows below are global statements and the country rows are statutory floors rather than Anthropic policy. Where a country row says statutory, it is what the law requires of any employer, not what Anthropic has promised.

United States

  • ImmigrationVisa sponsorship where possible with retained immigration counsel. Anthropic states that it sponsors visas where possible and retains immigration counsel, and that sponsorship is not guaranteed for every role or candidate. [official]
  • Work modelAt least 25 percent in office as the common posting standard. Cadence is role specific rather than universal: a sampled Pretraining Scaling role required five days a week and a Dublin counsel role required at least three. [official]

Benefit fields not publicly quantified

Anthropic publishes no country benefit portal, so almost every quantitative benefit question has no public answer: the health carrier and plan names, the employer premium share, the retirement match percentage and vesting, the paid-time-off day count, health and flexible spending account contributions, the life and disability coverage amounts, the commuter benefit amount, the relocation allowance, the education stipend amount and every India, Australia and European local plan design. The statutory rows above are legal floors that apply to any employer in those countries and should never be read as an Anthropic promise.

Performance Review & Pay Progression

The strongest publicly supported design principle is level-based internal equity. Anthropic's chief executive has described a series of levels, assignment of candidates to a level, and a principle of not negotiating that assigned level case by case in order to preserve fairness. Beyond that principle, the performance and progression record is almost entirely blank.

Not publicly disclosed

The rating scale and its labels are not publicly disclosed. No verified numeric scale or label set was located in either research bundle.
The annual review month, calibration window and effective date are not publicly disclosed, and no evidence supports importing a peer company's calendar.
Increase by rating, promotion increase percentage and any mid-year market-correction policy are not publicly disclosed.
Typical years at each level and any promotion-tenure rule are not publicly disclosed. Role requirements such as 3 to 5 years for product support, 7 or more for a data-centre programme manager, 8 or more for senior counsel and 12 or more for some staff postings are hiring requirements, not promotion clocks.
Bell curve or forced distribution percentages are not publicly disclosed, and neither is the difference between the individual contributor and manager review process.
Probation and confirmation terms, the performance-improvement process and any lateral-versus-internal pay differential are not publicly disclosed.
No quantitative gender or race pay-gap report and no country pay-equity adjustment dataset was located, although Anthropic publicly emphasises representation and equal opportunity in recruiting.

What can be inferred safely is narrow. Postings tie required years to the internal job level, which confirms structured levelling. Anthropic supports a very highly paid technical individual contributor track, so becoming a manager is not a precondition for top compensation, and the two sampled manager postings show that function moves the cash range more than the layer does. Because the company is scaling fast and has a confidential registration statement on file, equity refresh, liquidity and retention design are likely to matter more to an individual's outcome than any annual salary review, and none of that mechanism is public.

Pay progression evidence

No modeled progression table is offered here, because Anthropic publishes neither a promotion clock nor an increase percentage and inserting one would be speculation. The observable shape of progression is the equity curve rather than the cash curve: employee-reported annualized stock runs about $117,000 at the entry software-engineer label, $263,000 at Senior, $434,000 at Lead and $843,000 at Staff, so the package roughly triples between entry and Staff while base salary rises only about 62 percent. The reported refusal to make ad hoc retention matches suggests that a counteroffer is less likely to move an assigned level than at many peers, but the public record does not show whether exceptions exist.

H-1B / LCA Visa Footprint — United States

H-1B labour condition applications are the only government-verified view of Anthropic cash pay, and for a company that files no proxy they carry unusual weight. They are also base wages only, they exclude the equity that dominates a senior Anthropic package, and the aggregators that publish them disagree sharply because they count different objects under different filters.

Marketing, partnerships and technical salesAll Anthropic worksites, first two quarters of FY2026$155,522 to $500,000 base salaryMarketing runs $159,328 to $200,000, partnerships $227,760 to $248,500 and technical sales $155,522 to $500,000. Product design management runs $140,254 to $385,000.

Reading the data correctly

  • A labour condition application is a wage-condition filing, not a visa and not a hire. Certified applications exceed petitions, petitions exceed approvals and approvals exceed employees, and no aggregator's count is a headcount.
  • Labour condition application wages are proffered base salary. They exclude the annualized equity that is roughly two thirds of a reported senior Anthropic package, so a $320,000 visa median and a $1.25 million reported Staff total are not in conflict.
  • The FY2025 count of 116 against 159 and the FY2026 count of 252 applications against 57 petitions are not errors. Different aggregators apply different legal-name, form, date and status filters, and applications and Form I-129 petitions are simply different objects.
  • City and title slices have small populations. The FY2025 New York Member of Technical Staff median of $187,723 across 15 records and the all-city median of $280,000 across 83 records describe different populations, not a New York discount.
  • Approval-rate figures near 98 percent count decided petitions only and exclude pending and withdrawn cases, so the denominator matters as much as the numerator.
  • Anthropic did not exist as an H-1B sponsor before the early 2020s, so the FY2022 and FY2023 rows rest on very small samples and should be read as direction rather than distribution.

Key Nuances & Insights

01Official salary, private equity

Anthropic publishes unusually broad cash ranges on nearly every United States and London posting while keeping every grant mechanic private. It is the mirror image of most listed employers, which file detailed equity plans and publish no salary bands, and it means the visible half of an Anthropic package is the half that matters least at senior levels.

02Levels are real; the public level map is not

The chief executive has described assigning candidates to a level and declining to negotiate that level in the interest of fairness, and postings say required years correlate with the internal job level. None of the level codes on this page, and none of the Levels.fyi labels, has ever been confirmed by Anthropic.

03Equity, not bonus, is the technical pay lever

Employee-reported annualized stock is about 32 percent of the entry software-engineer package, 45 percent at Senior, 56 percent at Lead and 67 percent at Staff, while the same submissions show $0 of cash bonus at three of those four labels. Grant valuation, vesting, liquidity and dilution therefore matter more than any salary review.

04Member of Technical Staff is not a level

Federal filings show the same title spanning $133,952 to $1,380,000 of base salary. Anthropic uses scope-oriented titles deliberately, so any analysis that treats a title as a band destroys the resolution that matters.

05Geography is not a cost-of-living multiplier

Converted at the report rate, London Alignment and Pretraining research ranges land within about 1 percent of their United States twins, a London Staff Software Engineer range sits slightly above the United States posting, and the London Product Manager range sits about 15 percent below. A single United Kingdom discount would be wrong in both directions.

06India is not an offshore delivery centre

The Bengaluru office opened in February 2026 as a market, talent and partnership footprint. The only published local pay is two account-executive base ranges of ₹12.5 million to ₹20.2 million, which is roughly 0.55 of the United States sales anchor, far above what a legacy offshore delivery band would imply, and no India technical range exists at all.

07Sales is quoted differently from everything else

Anthropic states that a sales range is On Target Earnings, so it already contains the target commission, while every non-sales range is an annual salary with equity described separately. Plotting a sales range as base pay would overstate sales cash by the whole incentive.

08A valuation is not a share price

The $965 billion post-money figure prices a preferred financing. Without the share count, security class, preference stack, strike price, transfer restrictions and a current common fair market value, it cannot be turned into the value of anyone's grant, and neither research bundle attempts it.

09The fairness principle may cut both ways

A reported refusal to make ad hoc retention matches protects internal equity in a fierce talent market, but it also constrains individual retention responses. The public record does not show whether exceptions exist, so a candidate should expect the level, not the number, to be the negotiation.

10A listing would change the whole picture

A confidential draft registration statement was announced on 1 June 2026, and Reuters has reported that mandatory preset employee trading plans and founder supervoting stock are under consideration. Lockups, trading windows, tax withholding and insider-trading controls would all become live questions, and a public filing would finally expose the plan exhibits.

Research control

On cash, Anthropic sits at or near the top of the market: a posted $131,040 to $850,000 non-sales base range and a $405,000 floor on Staff Software Engineer postings exceed the total compensation many large technology employers pay at the same level. On disclosed total compensation there is nothing to compare, because Anthropic files no proxy and no remuneration report. The peer chief executive figures kept in this report, Microsoft at $96.5 million with a 480:1 ratio and Meta at $25.1 million with a 65:1 ratio, describe a disclosure format rather than a comparison, and OpenAI, xAI and Google DeepMind offer no separately disclosed frontier-lab leader package either.

Known gaps and diligence before relying on a cell

  1. 1The two research bundles disagree on headcount. One cites a San Francisco Chronicle report of more than 2,500 employees in early 2026 and a Revelio Labs estimate of about 4,020 in March 2026; the other cites The Information at about 3,000 in May 2026 and Revelio at about 3,830 in March 2026. This report uses about 3,000 as the headline because it is the most recent named-publisher estimate, and keeps the others visible rather than averaging them.
  2. 2The two bundles use slightly different foreign-exchange snapshots for the same 25 August 2026 date, for example 95.4176 against 95.3594 rupees per dollar and 0.733579 against 0.733115 pounds. This report standardises on the European Central Bank derived set from the larger bundle, which covers every currency used here.
  3. 3The bundles disagree on the Levels.fyi Lead Software Engineer total, at $779,000 against $777,000, and on the Staff total, quoted as both $1,248,333 and $1.25 million. This report uses the component stack of $341,000 base, $434,000 stock and about $1,700 bonus, which sums to $776,700, and $405,000 plus $843,000 for Staff.
  4. 4The two bundles disagree on the London Staff Software Engineer range. One samples only research and product roles, the other adds a Staff Software Engineer, Node Infrastructure posting at £325,000 to £485,000. The London factors here use both, which is why the London base factor is above 1 at every level.
  5. 5Levels.fyi's own page carries two different United States software-engineer medians, an overall $402,350 company median and a roughly $722,000 software-engineer median in its frequently-asked-questions panel. Both are live crowdsourced statistics that move as submissions change, and this report uses the lower company-wide figure for the pay-ratio denominator note.
  6. 6Rows built from posted salary ranges are cash only, because Anthropic confirms equity exists for those clusters but publishes no grant size. Rows built from Levels.fyi are base plus stock. The two therefore are not measuring the same thing, and the Staff+ row in particular reads below the Staff row because the Staff+ evidence is a posted salary with no grant attached.
  7. 7No notional employer benefit load is included anywhere in this report. The $500 a month wellness stipend, the education stipend, the home-office stipend and the meals are employer costs and benefits, not pay, and every total reconciles to base plus incentive plus annualized equity.
  8. 8Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, Mumbai beyond the Bengaluru carry-across, Auckland and Dubai are named in the bundles as offices, hiring markets or coverage placeholders but carry no published salary range. Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul and Singapore are excluded from the pay table rather than being given a converted United States factor, so the report understates Anthropic's geographic footprint in order not to overstate its pay evidence.
  9. 9The Bengaluru factor rests on two go-to-market postings and no technical posting, so it is carried flat up the ladder instead of being interpolated. Whether Anthropic's India technical pay compresses against San Francisco the way most Indian technology pay does is genuinely unknown.
  10. 10No company-wide salary-hike percentage, pay freeze, salary cut, layoff programme, campus offer revision or delayed-joining event was located for 2024 to 2026. The absence of a result is not proof that nothing happened.

Recent News & Workforce Trend

Anthropic's 2026 has been a story of valuation, geography and listing preparation rather than of compensation announcements. No company-wide salary action of any kind was located in either research bundle.

There is no audited headcount and no annual attrition rate. Three sources using three methods produce three answers for roughly the same period, and this report keeps them apart rather than reconciling them into a false single number. The only retention evidence is a SignalFire-derived finding, reported by TechRepublic, that 80 percent of the 2021 to early-2023 hire cohort was still at Anthropic two years later, which is cohort retention and not one minus annual attrition. Reuters reported in September 2025 that Anthropic planned to triple its international workforce, so the geographic mix is changing faster than the total.

Founder supervoting stock reported to be under consideration

Reuters, citing The Information, also reported an estimate that Dario Amodei owns around 2 percent of the company and separately reported pre-IPO credit-facility discussions above $10 billion alongside a revenue run rate above $65 billion by the end of July 2026.

Mandatory preset employee stock-trading plans reported to be under consideration

Reuters reported that Anthropic was weighing compulsory 10b5-1-style schedules for rank-and-file employees after a listing, to reduce insider-trading risk. It is a prospective compliance design rather than an adopted employee-plan term.
