How Akamai Pays
Akamai's Software Engineer 1 to Senior Principal ladder and normalized M1 to M5 management tiers, priced across 18 markets alongside RSUs, performance and relative-return units and a 15 percent discounted ESPP, a $15.95M CEO package at 124:1 on a one-dollar salary, and 219 FY2025 H-1B filings.
Band Hierarchy
Akamai publishes job titles but no global grade codebook. The Software Engineer 1 through Senior Principal sequence is a genuine Akamai title ladder visible in postings and salary submissions; the R0 graduate tier, the IC7 fellow tier and the M1 through M5 management codes are research-normalized labels that no Akamai document uses. Only the EVP, chief executive and non-employee director rows carry a company disclosure.

Hierarchy qualifications and legacy structures
- Akamai job postings and salary datasets expose the Software Engineer 1 through Senior Principal Software Engineer sequence, but no Akamai document maps those titles onto numeric grades.
- The two research bundles disagree on the management ladder itself. One normalizes managers as M1 through M6 ending at the C-suite, the other as M1 through M10 with separate vice president, senior vice president and executive vice president rungs. This report uses the shorter M1 to M5 form plus a filed executive tier.
- Architect, Security Architect and Solutions Architect titles appear across the careers site and the salary datasets, but their placement against the engineering ladder is not publicly disclosed.
- Akamai has absorbed Linode, Noname Security and Fermyon among others. No public filing explains legacy grade conversion, salary protection or equity conversion for those employees.
- The non-employee director row is a governance package, not an employment band, and is excluded from the range chart.
Peer-level mapping
| Band | Archetype | Peer mapping | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| R0 | Graduate / Trainee | Entry and new-graduate hiring across the wider technology market | R0 is a research-normalized label. Akamai publishes no graduate band and no standard new-graduate stock grant is evidenced anywhere in the bundles.Cambridge modeled anchor. The $10,000 gap between base and total is a modeled variable and stock allowance, not an observed graduate package. |
| IC1 | Software Engineer 1 | Entry engineer | Akamai's internal grade numbers are not public, so any crosswalk to a peer level ladder would be speculation on title alone.Levels.fyi United States records place the representative package at about $102.8K base, $2.9K annualized stock and $7.5K bonus for $113.1K total. |
| IC2 | Software Engineer 2 | Mid-level engineer | The two bundles disagree here: one reports a $149K median total and the other a $159.3K representative package. This row uses the lower figure. |
| IC3 | Senior Software Engineer 1 | Senior engineer | Akamai's internal grade numbers are not public, so any crosswalk to a peer level ladder would be speculation on title alone.Levels.fyi records show about $149.4K base, $23.3K annualized stock and $18.8K bonus for a $191.5K package; the anchor uses the $189K median total. |
| IC4 | Senior Software Engineer 2 | Senior II and staff-like scope | Observed bonus in public submissions is far below the modeled 10 to 15 percent target range, so the cash split at this level is the least reliable part of the row. |
| IC5 | Principal Software Engineer | Principal and staff-plus technical leadership | Akamai's internal grade numbers are not public, so any crosswalk to a peer level ladder would be speculation on title alone. The closest match between the two bundles: the reconstructed $30.6K bonus and $49.4K stock sit within a thousand dollars of the observed $32.0K and $46.6K. |
| IC6 | Senior Principal Software Engineer | Senior principal | This is the top engineering level with usable public data. One bundle puts base at $230K and the other at $245.8K; the anchor uses $230K. |
| IC7 | Fellow / Distinguished Engineer | Fellow and distinguished tiers at large infrastructure vendors | No Akamai salary submission reaches this level. The row exists because such roles exist in the market, not because Akamai has confirmed the tier. |
| M1 | Engineering Manager | First-line manager | Public manager submissions are thin and non-monotonic, showing about $267K at Manager 1 and $231K at Senior Manager 1. This row is smoothed. |
| M2 | Senior Engineering Manager | Senior manager | M1 through M5 are research-normalized labels. Akamai publishes titles but no numeric management grades. |
| M3 | Director | Director | The Levels.fyi director page shows about $447.5K total against the $380K used here, split roughly $260.5K base, $115K stock and $72K bonus. |
| M4 | Senior Director | Senior director | No usable public submission exists at this level. The row bridges the observed director benchmark and the filed executive tier. |
| M5 | Vice President | Vice president | Akamai discloses no vice-president compensation table. One bundle estimates annual stock of $400K to $1.2M at this level, which cannot be reconciled with its own $650K total. |
| EVP | Executive Vice President / C-suite | Named executive officers at F5, Cloudflare and Fastly | An average of the four non-chief-executive named executive officers for 2025, not a range that applies to every EVP-titled employee.Summary Compensation Table averages from the 2026 proxy. The annual incentive is settled in vested shares and is carried here as bonus rather than left inside the stock column. |
| CEO | Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer | Chief executives of F5, Cloudflare, Fastly and Palo Alto Networks | A one-dollar salary makes any percentage-of-base reading meaningless, and the $1.5 million target bonus cannot be expressed as a percentage of that salary.2025 Summary Compensation Table. The stock column carries both the annual long-term award and the share-settled annual bonus; this row separates the two. |
| Board | Non-employee Director | Large-cap United States technology boards | A governance package rather than an employment band. The chief executive receives no additional director pay. |
Critical evidence warning
Akamai publishes no salary ranges, band minimums or midpoints for ordinary employees, and no rating scale or merit matrix. Every non-executive figure here is a third-party observation or a calibrated model around one, and should be used for orientation rather than quoted as an Akamai pay band.

Global Footprint & Pay Arbitrage
Akamai reported more than 11,000 employees in more than 30 countries at the 2025 year end, with roughly 65 percent outside the United States. Cambridge is the pay anchor. Bangalore, Krakow and Tel Aviv are the largest offices after it, and every other market is calibrated against the Cambridge median.

Akamai does not publish city-level headcount. The Form 10-K names Cambridge and Bangalore among its largest properties and one bundle adds Krakow and Tel Aviv as the next largest, but no office in this catalogue is ranked by employee count. The FlexBase model lets more than 95 percent of employees choose home, office or another approved workspace, so an office address is a weaker signal of pay geography here than at most peers.

- The Cambridge column is the anchor. Software Engineer 1 through Senior Principal medians come from Levels.fyi United States records cross-checked against Glassdoor and Akamai's own advertised base ranges.
- Six of the sixteen Cambridge rows rest on a direct observation. The graduate, fellow, senior director and vice president rows have no public submission at all and are modeled bridges.
- Bangalore is the second-best evidenced market, with five observed rows. Software Engineer 1 sits at about 1.95 million rupees total and Principal Software Engineer at about 10.32 million rupees.
- India total compensation runs at roughly 15 percent of the Cambridge anchor at the graduate band and rises towards 48 percent at the top of the ladder, because senior Indian packages carry a much larger equity share.
- The executive vice president, chief executive and director rows are proxy disclosures converted for comparison only. They are global values, not a local pay range in any selected city.
Model rules
- Every modeled cell is the Cambridge median multiplied by the city base or total factor and then by the 24 August 2026 currency snapshot.
- City factors are fitted across the full ladder rather than taken at one level, because the bundles show the offshore gap narrowing sharply with seniority.
- Each market carries a separate base and total factor. Base pay compresses less than total compensation against the Cambridge anchor in India, Poland, Costa Rica and Japan, and more in Israel, where local packages are cash-heavy and stock-light.
- A total compensation cell is base plus target variable plus annualized stock value. Sign-on payments, relocation and one-time retention awards are excluded.
- One bundle refused to localize United States bands into Israel, Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Costa Rica, Japan, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates at all, on the ground that no Akamai-specific band data exists there. Treat those columns as planning envelopes, not benchmarks.
Variable Pay & Annual Cash Incentive
Akamai discloses its executive incentive formula in detail and publishes nothing about an employee bonus grid. The unusual feature is settlement: executive annual bonuses, and according to the proxy a majority of non-executive bonuses since 2023, are paid in fully vested Akamai shares rather than cash. Band targets below are modeled from the bundles' own estimates.

| Mani Sundaram | $400,000 | $605,055 | 151.3% of target |
Employee payout timing and history
There is no published bonus-target grid by level and no employee-wide payout history. The 151.3 percent result for 2025 applies to the executive plan and should not be read as a companywide multiplier, especially given the same plan funded at 72.6 percent for 2024 and about 62 percent for 2022. The proxy does say that a majority of non-executive employees have received annual bonuses in stock since 2023, which is a meaningful structural fact even though no percentage attaches to it.
Sales and special incentives
The 2025 Form 10-K states that Akamai changed its sales organisation and its sales compensation structure during 2025, but discloses no quota, commission rate, accelerator or draw detail. Sales roles in this model carry the same modeled targets as their level peers, which will understate on-target earnings for quota-carrying sellers, particularly in Sydney, London, Tokyo, Singapore and Dubai.
Equity — RSUs, PSUs, Options & ESPP
Akamai runs an unusually broad equity programme for a mature infrastructure company. The Form 10-K states that the vast majority of employees hold stock awards and that most employees are eligible for the purchase plan. The instruments are restricted stock units, performance units tied to operating results, relative shareholder return awards and deferred stock units for directors; no stock options were outstanding at the February 2026 measurement date.
- Adding the 8.0 million approved shares to the 9,187,362 available at 12 February 2026 implies about 17.19 million available before subsequent grants. That is a mechanical roll-forward, not a verified current reserve.
- On the pre-amendment snapshot, outstanding awards were about 49.3 percent of outstanding-plus-available plan capacity. After simply adding the new shares the same awards would be about 34.2 percent. Utilisation after the 2026 grant cycle is not publicly disclosed.
- The proxy-disclosed net burn rate was 3.5 percent in 2023, 3.2 percent in 2024 and 4.3 percent in 2025, so dilution pressure rose in the most recent year.
- No stock options were outstanding at 12 February 2026. Every full-value award in the pool is a restricted, performance or deferred stock unit.
Equity plan capacity and grant activity
Vesting — common reported employee schedule
Executive time-based restricted stock units vest in three equal annual instalments, and the performance and relative shareholder return units cliff at the end of a three-year period. Employee submissions show both a three-year and an alternative four-year pattern in circulation, so the employee schedule should be read off the individual award agreement rather than assumed. Director deferred stock units vest in full at the first anniversary.
Eligibility by hierarchy level
- Broad eligibility is a filed fact, not an inference: the Form 10-K says the vast majority of employees hold stock awards and the proxy says new employees are generally eligible for a new-hire award.
- Broad does not mean uniform. Observed annualized stock runs from about $2.9 thousand at Software Engineer 1 to roughly $108.8 thousand at Senior Principal, a factor of nearly forty across the same ladder.
- No standard graduate grant is evidenced anywhere in the three bundles, so the R0 row carries a modeled allowance rather than an observed award.
- The bundles' own annual grant estimates by band run $2 thousand to $8 thousand at Software Engineer 1, $15 thousand to $40 thousand at Senior Software Engineer 1, $80 thousand to $180 thousand at Senior Principal, $100 thousand to $250 thousand at director and $400 thousand to $1.2 million at vice president. The vice-president figure cannot be reconciled with the same bundle's $650 thousand total for that level.
- India observations show the same shape in rupees: about 135 thousand rupees of annualized stock at Software Engineer 1 rising to about 2.6 million rupees at Principal Software Engineer.

Executive Compensation
2025 Summary Compensation Table values from the 2026 proxy statement. Akamai settles executive annual bonuses in fully vested shares, so the disclosed stock column contains both the long-term award and the annual incentive. These are grant-date accounting values, not cash received.
Reading the package
Salary is one dollar, so effectively 100 percent of the chief executive's 2025 reported total was stock. About $2.269 million of that was the annual incentive settled in vested shares at $94.17 and the remainder was the annual long-term award. Any analysis that reads a salary multiple, a bonus percentage of base or a cash-versus-equity ratio for this role will produce a meaningless number.
Peer totals are dominated by grant-date accounting and by which year a multi-year equity award lands in, so a single year comparison is close to meaningless. The two bundles even disagree on Fastly, reporting $5.692 million and about $6.80 million for the same year, and one adds DigitalOcean at about $1.21 million and Zscaler at about $0.03 million to make the point that grant timing can drive a headline to almost nothing. None of these figures is realized pay, and none is normalized for tenure, market capitalisation or performance.
Named Executive Officers & Board
Akamai's executive team was stable through 2025 and 2026. Base salaries and target bonuses for the named executives were left unchanged when the compensation committee set 2026 targets in February 2026. The most significant commercial leadership change was in Asia Pacific sales.
The two bundles present the same executives differently. One shows the Summary Compensation Table as filed, where the stock column carries both the long-term award and the share-settled annual bonus; the other shows an approved-grant view that separates the annual incentive from the approved stock award value. The totals agree to within rounding, but the stock figures differ because a grant approval value and a Summary Compensation Table accounting value are not the same measurement. This report uses the filed table for the executive rows and the approved values for the grant architecture. Akamai's stock ownership guidelines require roughly six times base salary for the chief executive, three times for other named executives, one times for other participating senior executives and five times the cash retainer for non-employee directors.
Board compensation framework
| Element | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard non-employee director package | $350,000 | $75,000 in cash plus $275,000 in deferred stock units. The chief executive receives no additional director pay. |
| Board Chair supplement | $100,000 | $25,000 in cash and $75,000 in deferred stock units on top of the standard package. |
| Committee chair supplement | $35,000 | $5,000 in cash and $30,000 in deferred stock units for each committee chair role. |
| Deferred stock unit vesting | First anniversary | Director awards generally vest in full one year after grant. |
| Director ownership guideline | 5x cash retainer | Part of the same guideline set that requires roughly six times salary of the chief executive. |
The director package is heavily weighted to stock at about 79 percent of the standard $350,000, which puts director incentives on the same footing as the executive programme. No stock options are granted to directors.
Regional heads and other officers
Robert Blumofe as Chief Technology Officer, Aaron Ahola as General Counsel, Kim Salem-Jackson as Chief Marketing Officer and Anthony Williams as Chief Human Resources Officer are executive officers who did not qualify as named executives for 2025, so no compensation table exists for them. Regional-head compensation, including the Asia Pacific, EMEA, Latin America, Japan, India and Poland leadership, is not publicly disclosed at any level.
Insider Trades — SEC Forms 3/4/5
Akamai is a Nasdaq-listed United States issuer, so the governing record is SEC Section 16 Forms 3, 4 and 5. Indian exchange filings, SEBI insider-trading rules, SAST disclosures and promoter groups do not apply. A withholding line is shares surrendered to cover tax on a vesting, not a discretionary decision to sell.

Reading guide
Benefits & Perks
Akamai publishes country benefit guides for the United States, India, Poland, Israel, Japan and Costa Rica, so those markets are far better evidenced than the pay picture. Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Czech Republic, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates have no Akamai-specific benefit card in public sources, and only statutory context is shown for them.
United States
- Retirement — 401(k) match of 75 percent on the first 8 percent, capped at $9,000. Immediately vested. The match moved from cash to company stock during 2025 and the percentage was increased; company contributions were about $28.2 million in stock for 2025 against $19.1 million in cash for 2024. [official]
- Medical — Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts plans, Kaiser in California. Dental through Delta Dental and vision through VSP. Health savings account employer contribution up to $2,000 and a $500 wellness reimbursement. [official]
- Leave — Unlimited paid time off for eligible salaried employees. Twelve holidays and fifteen backup-care days a year alongside the flexible policy. [official]
- Family — 18 weeks maternity, 10 weeks paternity and 10 weeks family leave. The benefits guide figures sit above Akamai's published global averages of 20.9 weeks primary and 6.1 weeks secondary parent leave. [official]
- Protection — Short-term disability at 100 percent for up to 13 weeks. Dropping to 66.67 percent thereafter, with tuition reimbursement up to $7,500 a year. [official]
Global programs
- Equity — Broad-based stock awards and the 2026 purchase plan. The vast majority of employees hold stock awards, and shares are bought at 85 percent of the lower of the offering-date and purchase-date price, subject to local eligibility and tax rules. [official]
- Working model — FlexBase. More than 95 percent of employees can choose home, office or another approved workspace, with temporary global remote-work options. [official]
- Family — 20.9 weeks average paid primary-parent leave globally. With 6.1 weeks of paid secondary-parent leave on average. India runs 26 and 4 weeks and the United States 18 and 10 weeks. [official]
- Wellbeing — Lyra mental-health support and five wellness days a year. Carrot family-forming support is offered in relevant markets alongside Lyra. [official]
- Growth — Career Hub, mentoring and the L.E.A.D. development programme. Certification and learning support sit alongside these; nearly 16 percent of open positions were filled internally during 2025. [official]
- Community — Paid volunteer time. The exact allowance varies by country, typically two days or sixteen hours. [official]
Benefit fields not publicly quantified
Akamai's India guide does not name a provident fund contribution rate, gratuity terms beyond the statutory obligation or a National Pension System employer rate, and one bundle records the India leave-day breakdown as undisclosed while the other quotes it from the benefit guide. United Kingdom, German, Czech, Singaporean, Australian, New Zealand and Emirati Akamai-specific amounts are absent from every reviewed source. Employee premium contributions, plan tiers and eligibility waiting periods are not published in any market. These are recorded as not publicly disclosed rather than estimated from statutory minimums.
Performance Review & Pay Progression
Akamai publishes almost nothing about how individual performance turns into pay. There is no public rating scale, no distribution, no merit matrix and no salary-review calendar. The one part of the annual cycle with real visibility is equity timing, because grant dates are disclosed in the proxy.

Equity timing is the most concrete part of the annual cycle. Annual awards to eligible employees are generally made on the first Monday in March, new-hire grants on or about the twelfth of a month, and executive bonus shares after the annual results are certified. Internal mobility is real rather than rhetorical: nearly 16 percent of open positions were filled internally during 2025, supported by Career Hub, mentoring and the L.E.A.D. leadership programme.
Pay progression evidence
Modeled progression, not Akamai policy: graduate to Software Engineer 1 typically takes 0.5 to 1.5 years; Software Engineer 1 to 2 takes 2 to 3 years; Software Engineer 2 to Senior 1 takes 2 to 4 years; Senior 1 to Senior 2 takes 2 to 4 years; Senior 2 to Principal takes 3 to 5 years; Principal to Senior Principal takes 3 to 6 years; engineering manager to senior manager takes 2 to 4 years; senior manager to director takes 3 to 5 years; director to senior director takes 3 to 5 years; and senior director to vice president takes 3 to 6 years. One of the two bundles deliberately refuses to publish any timing model at all, on the ground that a generic two-to-three-year rule would be an analyst assumption. No promotion hike percentage should be quoted as Akamai policy without an offer letter or compensation statement.
H-1B / LCA Visa Footprint — United States
Akamai is a steady but modest H-1B sponsor by large-cap technology standards, filing a couple of hundred labour condition applications a year concentrated on the Cambridge headquarters. These wages are proffered base salary only, so they exclude the stock that makes up the larger part of a senior Akamai package.
Dataset summary
| Dataset | Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| MyVisaJobs employer profile | 219 certified FY2025 applications at a $157,006 average offered base | Also the source for the multi-year approval and denial counts. Labour condition application counts and petition counts measure different processes and must not be added. |
| SponsorWage FY2025 distribution | Median $153,489 across the same 219 filings | 25th percentile $130,523, 75th percentile $176,417 and 90th percentile $202,509. |
| H1BGrader FY2026 distribution | 78 applications at a $169,939 median | Minimum $109,221, average $171,653, 75th percentile $197,657, 90th percentile $215,681 and maximum $252,092. |
| H1BGrader employer profile | A different median from the same provider's detailed page | One bundle flags the discrepancy and uses the detailed distribution page rather than averaging the two views. |
| MyVisaJobs FY2026 petition outcomes | 75 petitions, 72 approvals and 3 denials | MyVisaJobs reports a larger application count than H1BGrader for the same year because of employer-name normalisation and refresh timing. |
City-level H-1B wage history
| City | P25 | Median | P75 | Records |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Cambridge, Massachusetts The headquarters worksite and by far the largest concentration. City-level quartiles are not published by the source. | $131K | $147,143 | $176K | 89 |
San Jose, California The highest-paying volume worksite in the dataset, roughly 26 percent above Cambridge at the median. | $163K | $184,892 | $210K | 21 |
Irving, Texas A worksite that appears in the visa record but not in the office catalogue used for the pay model. | $135K | $152,631 | $172K | 11 |
Fort Lauderdale, Florida Sales, services and support worksite; the visa median sits above the modeled local pay factor would suggest. | $137K | $155,000 | $175K | 7 |
San Francisco, California The highest median of any worksite, on a very small sample of five filings. | $184K | $207,977 | $232K | 5 |
Leander, Texas A small but well-paid worksite in the filing set, above the Cambridge median. | $168K | $190,735 | $212K | 5 |
Austin, Texas Four filings only; treat the median as indicative rather than a benchmark. | $138K | $156,133 | $176K | 4 |
New York, New York Four filings, close to the Cambridge median despite the higher local market. | $133K | $150,258 | $170K | 4 |
Westford, Massachusetts A second Massachusetts worksite, running about 22 percent above Cambridge on four filings. | $159K | $180,050 | $203K | 4 |
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania The lowest median in the dataset on three filings, consistent with the cloud-operations role mix. | $108K | $122,078 | $138K | 3 |
All-years aggregates. P25/P75 are rounded reconstruction values marked modeled; medians and record counts are the stronger fields.

Reading the data correctly
- Labour condition application wages are proffered base salary. They exclude restricted stock units, the annual incentive and the purchase-plan discount, which together are the larger part of a senior Akamai package.
- City quartiles for Cambridge and the smaller worksites are not published by the source. Where a quartile appears here without a published figure it is reconstructed from the national distribution and should be read as an estimate.
- A labour condition application is a filing, not a hire. Certified applications exceed actual petitions, and petitions exceed actual employees.
- The FY2025 and FY2026 extracts come from different vendors with different fiscal-year filters, so their medians of $153,489 and $169,939 cannot be merged into one series.
- Vendors disagree on counts because of employer-name normalisation, filing-versus-certification definitions and refresh dates. This report preserves each figure separately rather than averaging them.
Key Nuances & Insights
Akamai's filed statement that the vast majority of employees hold stock awards is genuinely unusual for a mature infrastructure company, and it is a real advantage over peers where stock starts above a senior threshold. But amount, refresh timing and any minimum level stay discretionary, and observed annualized stock runs from about $2.9 thousand at Software Engineer 1 to roughly $108.8 thousand at Senior Principal. The written offer, not the disclosure, is what determines an individual grant.
Executive annual bonuses are settled in fully vested Akamai shares, and the proxy says a majority of non-executive employees have received annual bonuses in stock since 2023. That changes liquidity, tax withholding and retention dynamics compared with cash variable pay, and it means the annual incentive shows up in Form 4 filings rather than on a payslip.
Tom Leighton takes a salary of one dollar, so his target bonus cannot be expressed as a percentage of base, his salary multiple is meaningless, and the 124 to 1 pay ratio understates the underlying gap relative to peers with conventional salaries. His 2025 total was effectively all stock.
The same corporate scorecard funded at 151.3 percent for 2025, 72.6 percent for 2024 and about 62 percent for 2022. A headline target percentage therefore understates both the upside and the downside, and no non-executive payout history exists at all to calibrate against.
Reported United States to India total-compensation multiples run from about 5.5 times at Software Engineer 1 down to 2.6 times at Principal, driven by a much larger equity share in senior Indian packages. That is a labour-market outcome, not a disclosed Akamai geographic multiplier.
The United States and India have enough public observations to build a defensible ladder. Australia, Israel, Poland and the United Kingdom have partial coverage. New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Germany, Costa Rica, Japan, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates have essentially none, and one of the two research bundles refused to localize United States bands into those markets at all rather than synthesize numbers.
More than 95 percent of employees can choose home, office or another approved workspace. Compensation geography is more likely tied to an employee's registered work location than to the office they are nominally attached to, which makes a city column here a market reference rather than an office pay scale.
Sales and solutions roles in Sydney, London, Tokyo, Singapore and Dubai can carry commission components far larger than the modest variable percentages in the engineering-derived model. Akamai also changed its sales organisation and sales compensation structure during 2025 without disclosing the new design.
Akamai has absorbed Linode, Noname Security and Fermyon among others, and the Philadelphia office is largely a Linode inheritance. No public source explains legacy grade conversion, salary protection or equity conversion for any acquired population.
Akamai recorded roughly $55 million of restructuring charges in 2025 and about $2.0 million in the first half of 2026, with headcount reduced in some areas and redeployed to security and cloud. No company-wide salary freeze, hike percentage or campus-offer revision was announced in any reviewed source, and none should be inferred from the charge.
Research control
Against F5, Cloudflare and Fastly, Akamai sits in the middle of the content delivery and edge security field on chief executive pay and near the top on breadth of employee equity participation. Its engineering ladder pays below the Bay Area platform companies at every level, with a Cambridge Senior Principal at about $402 thousand where a large-cap Bay Area principal often clears $500 thousand, and it compensates partly through unusually broad stock eligibility and a rich purchase plan rather than through headline cash.
Evidence classification
| Label | Meaning | Examples and permitted use |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | An Akamai filing, an official Akamai benefit guide, a government rule or an official job posting. | Executive and director pay, equity plan terms, share pools, benefits, headcount, burn rate and exchange rates. |
| Reported | A named third-party dataset with observable records, chiefly Levels.fyi and Glassdoor, plus the visa aggregators. | The Cambridge anchor medians, the Bangalore, Israel, Poland, United Kingdom and Australia observations, and the H-1B wage distributions. |
| Modeled | The Cambridge anchor multiplied by a fitted city calibration factor and foreign exchange, inside a planning envelope. | Every city without a direct observation, and the graduate, fellow, management, senior director and vice president band rows. |
| Not publicly disclosed | No source in any of the three research bundles supports a figure. | Recorded as such rather than estimated. |

Known gaps and diligence before relying on a cell
- 1The two bundles normalize the management ladder differently. One uses M1 through M6 ending at the C-suite, the other M1 through M10 with separate vice president, senior vice president and executive vice president rungs. This report uses the shorter form because it is the one with a matching numeric band table.
- 2The bundles disagree on the Software Engineer 2 anchor, at a $149 thousand median total against a $159.3 thousand representative package, and on the Senior Principal base, at $230 thousand against $245.8 thousand. This report uses the lower figure in both cases because it comes from the bundle that publishes a full low, median and high table.
- 3The director row is the widest disagreement in the non-executive ladder. One bundle models $380 thousand total and the other observes about $447.5 thousand on the current Levels.fyi director page. The anchor uses $380 thousand for consistency with the rest of that bundle's table.
- 4The vice-president row does not reconcile inside its own source: the same bundle estimates annual stock of $400 thousand to $1.2 million while giving a $650 thousand total against a $300 thousand base. This report honours the total and treats the equity estimate as unusable.
- 5Executive figures differ by measurement basis. The approved 2025 stock-award values total $13.770 million for the chief executive while the Summary Compensation Table stock column reads $15,954,171, because a grant approval value and an accounting value are different measurements and the table also carries the share-settled annual bonus.
- 6The bundles use different currency snapshots, 24 August and 25 August 2026, differing in the third decimal place. This report standardises on the 24 August snapshot, which covers every currency used here including the New Zealand dollar and the dirham.
- 7The $105.13 reference share price is dated 25 August 2026, yet the insider log shows executed prices of $126.77 on 15 July and $132.46 on 12 June 2026. Both figures are carried as filed rather than reconciled.
- 8H-1B extracts cannot be merged. MyVisaJobs and SponsorWage cover FY2025 at a $157,006 average and a $153,489 median, while H1BGrader covers FY2026 at a $169,939 median on a different filing set, and the same provider shows a different median on its own summary page.
- 9Peer chief executive pay differs between bundles for Fastly, at $5.692 million against about $6.80 million, and the two bundles choose different peer sets entirely, one using F5, Cloudflare, Fastly and Palo Alto Networks and the other adding DigitalOcean and Zscaler.
- 10Akamai discloses segment revenue and an Asia Pacific milestone above $1 billion for 2025 but no full geographic revenue split in any reviewed source, so no regional revenue panel is shown rather than a partial one.
- 11One bundle documents India benefit details from the country guide while the other records the same items as not publicly disclosed. The guide figures are used here and attributed to the guide.

Recent News & Workforce Trend
Akamai's 2026 compensation story is about plan capacity and settlement mechanics rather than a pay action. The two equity plans were expanded in May, the executive bonus paid well above target in February, and restructuring continued at a much smaller scale than in 2025.
Growth has been modest and partly offset by restructuring: Akamai cut headcount in some areas during 2025 while redeploying into security and cloud, at a charge of roughly $55 million. The three figures above come from different source types, a Form 10-K, a prior filing and a website, so the trend is directionally reliable rather than precisely comparable. Akamai publishes no numeric attrition rate and no city-level headcount at all.
Security revenue was $604 million and cloud infrastructure services $99 million. Full-year 2026 revenue guidance moved to $4.445 billion to $4.530 billion, which improves the backdrop for the executive scorecard but carries no workforce payout promise.
About $1.825 million in the second quarter and $2.008 million for the six months, tied to prior actions, with no material additional charges expected. That is a fraction of the roughly $55 million recorded for 2025.
The Fourth Amendment added 8.0 million shares to the 2013 Stock Incentive Plan and the new 2026 Employee Stock Purchase Plan was adopted with 9.0 million shares registered.
Running to 30 November 2026, buying at 85 percent of the lower of the offering-date and purchase-date price for eligible employees in participating jurisdictions.
Sean Li became Senior Vice President for Regional Sales and Managing Director for Asia Pacific and Japan while Parimal Pandya moved to global sales strategy for cloud. Akamai stated that Asia Pacific exceeded $1 billion of revenue in 2025.
Chief executive total compensation of $15,954,172 against a $129,052 median employee, a ratio of 124 to 1, with the vast majority of employees holding stock awards.
74,252 units to the chief executive, 35,129 to the chief operating officer, 23,811 and 22,839 to the two other named executives, each vesting in three equal annual tranches.
Awards were delivered as fully vested shares priced at the $94.17 close. The chief executive received 24,094 shares worth about $2.27 million and immediately surrendered 11,650 for tax.
The compensation committee left named executive base salaries and target bonuses flat and approved new time-based and performance-based stock awards.
Up from $393.4 million in 2024 and $328.5 million in 2023, with the net burn rate rising to 4.3 percent. The United States retirement match also moved from cash to company stock during the year.
