How Abbott Pays
Abbott's AB1 to AB12 ladder priced across 30 markets in 15 countries, alongside stock options and performance restricted shares that start at manager level, a 15 percent lookback purchase plan reaching 60,000 non-US employees, a $24.20M CEO package at 166:1, and the FY2026 H-1B wage record.
Band Hierarchy
Abbott publishes no enterprise-wide grade catalogue. Public job records expose fragments such as Job Grade 16 in regional finance and Job Grade 17 on a current Mumbai senior manager posting, but nothing that joins entry level to the C-suite. The AB1 to AB12 ladder here is a normalised analytical taxonomy built for comparison; only the AB12, chief executive and director rows carry an Abbott disclosure.

Hierarchy qualifications and legacy structures
- Job Grade 16 and Job Grade 17 appear in current public Abbott postings, which proves a grade system exists but is nowhere near enough to reconstruct a full ladder from intern to chief executive.
- The crosswalk is most reliable for technical, regulatory and technology roles and progressively less precise for manufacturing, commercial and field-sales work, where Abbott can place equivalent scope differently by division.
- Abbott has absorbed St. Jude Medical, Alere and, in March 2026, Exact Sciences. No public filing shows how legacy grades were harmonised into one architecture, and subsidiary legal names persist in visa and Form 4 datasets.
- Vice president, senior vice president, executive vice president and group president are corporate titles rather than hidden grade numbers, so this report treats them as title tiers.
- Abbott India Limited is a separately listed affiliate with its own statutory pay disclosures. Its grades and its managing director's remuneration are not the parent company's ladder.
- The non-employee director row is a governance package, not an employment band, and is excluded from the range chart.
Peer-level mapping
| Band | Archetype | Peer mapping | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| AB1 | Intern / Trainee / Operator I | Medtronic and Stryker interns and operator I roles, Boston Scientific trainee | Manufacturing and professional tracks diverge immediately; an operator and a graduate engineer share this band only inside the normalised model.Abbott Park blueprint median from the research bundle. Abbott publishes no salary range for this band. |
| AB2 | Associate / Technician / Operator II | Peer-company associate, technician and operator II grades | Peer medical-technology firms place technician work differently against professional work, so the crosswalk is scope-based only. |
| AB3 | Professional I / Engineer I / Medical Representative | Engineer I, analyst and field sales professional at peer device and diagnostics firms | Sales roles at this band can carry materially more incentive pay than technical roles on the same grade.Calibrated against the Levels.fyi Abbott Software Engineer I median of $94,600 and the Glassdoor United States professional range. |
| AB4 | Professional II / Engineer II / Specialist | Engineer II, specialist and key account manager at peer firms | Abbott divisions use different title conventions, so the same scope can appear under several titles.Calibrated against the Levels.fyi Software Engineer II and III medians of $110,000 and $117,000 and the Regulatory Affairs median of $120,000. |
| AB5 | Senior Professional / Engineer III / Scientist II | Senior engineer, senior specialist and senior territory manager at peer firms | The public sample is heavily weighted to technology and regulatory roles, so manufacturing and commercial scope is less well evidenced.Calibrated against the Levels.fyi Program Manager median of $140,000 and the Glassdoor senior professional range. |
| AB6 | Lead / Staff / Principal / Manager I | Lead or staff individual contributor and first-line manager at peer firms | This is where the individual contributor and management paths converge, so a single peer title cannot cover both.Calibrated against the Levels.fyi Senior Software Engineer median of $167,000 and the Product Manager median of $178,000. |
| AB7 | Manager / Senior Principal | Manager and senior principal technical leader at peer firms | The exact management-versus-individual-contributor equivalence at this scope is not public at Abbott.Calibrated against the Levels.fyi Staff Software Engineer median of $191,000 and Level IV labour condition application wages. |
| AB8 | Senior Manager / Programme Director | Senior manager and programme director at peer device and diagnostics firms | A current Mumbai senior manager posting carries Job Grade 17, which confirms grades exist but does not fix this band to a number. |
| AB9 | Director | Director at peer medical-technology and diagnostics companies | Technical fellows can carry director-equivalent economics without managing people, so the row covers two different shapes of job.The first band where the research model stops localising pay fully and applies a global floor for corporate leadership. |
| AB10 | Senior Director / Divisional VP / Country GM | Senior director, divisional vice president and country general manager at peers | Country scope and business size create very wide dispersion at this layer, and Abbott discloses none of it. |
| AB11 | VP / SVP / Division President / Corporate Officer | Vice president and division president tiers at peer medical-technology firms | Abbott discloses awards for named officers, never a universal vice-president schedule, so this row bridges the director observations and the proxy tables. |
| AB12 | EVP / Group President / C-suite | Named executive officers at Medtronic, Stryker, Boston Scientific and Becton Dickinson | An average of the four non-CEO named executives, not a range that applies to every EVP-titled employee.Average of Boudreau, Earnhardt, Salvadori and Scoggins in the 2025 Summary Compensation Table; stock and option awards are combined into equity and pension change plus all other compensation into other. |
| CEO | Chairman and Chief Executive Officer | Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Stryker, Boston Scientific and Becton Dickinson chief executives | A grant-date accounting total. The 2025 payout was well below target, so reported pay and realised pay diverge sharply in this particular year.2025 Summary Compensation Table: $8,787,378 of stock awards plus $8,788,430 of option awards in the equity column, and $2,194,304 of pension change plus $959,798 of all other compensation in the other column. |
| Board | Non-employee Director | Large-cap United States healthcare boards | A governance package rather than an employment band. Robert Ford receives no additional pay for board service.A $10,500 monthly cash fee annualised, plus the roughly $210,000 restricted stock unit award granted at the 2025 annual meeting. Committee, chair and lead-director fees are additive. |
Critical evidence warning
Abbott does not publish salary ranges, band minimums or band midpoints for ordinary employees anywhere in the world, and it publishes no rating scale or merit matrix. Every non-executive figure here is a third-party observation or a calibrated model around one, and should be used for orientation rather than quoted as an Abbott pay band.

Global Footprint & Pay Arbitrage
Abbott's careers site showed 122,000 employees globally and more than 41,000 in the United States in August 2026, against roughly 115,000 at the 2025 year end with 69 percent of them outside the United States. Abbott Park is the pay anchor and every other market is calibrated against its medians.

Abbott publishes no city-by-city employee census, so this catalogue does not rank offices by headcount. The only country-level signals in the sources are more than 41,000 employees in the United States, nearly 3,000 in Ireland across ten sites, more than 2,000 in the United Kingdom and 3,679 permanent employees at the separately listed Abbott India Limited.

- The Abbott Park column is the anchor. AB3 through AB7 are calibrated on Levels.fyi Abbott role medians running from $94,600 for Software Engineer I to $191,000 for Staff Software Engineer, with Program Manager at $140,000, Product Manager at $178,000 and Regulatory Affairs at $120,000.
- AB1, AB2, AB8, AB9 and AB10 have no direct public observation and are modelled from the research bundle's United States blueprint. They are planning envelopes, not benchmarks.
- Alameda and Santa Clara sit 15 percent above the anchor and Orlando 10 percent below, which is the widest United States spread in the model. Sylmar files its visa records under the St. Jude Medical legal entity rather than Abbott Laboratories.
- India runs at roughly 13 to 14 percent of the Abbott Park base at the junior bands, and the two Indian manufacturing sites at Goa and Baddi sit lower again at 9 to 10 percent. Abbott India Limited separately reports 3,679 permanent employees, which is not the whole of Abbott's Indian workforce.
- The AB12, chief executive and director rows are proxy disclosures converted for comparison only. They are global executive values, not a local pay range in any selected city.
Model rules
- Every modelled cell is the Abbott Park median multiplied by the city base or total factor and then by the 25 August 2026 foreign-exchange snapshot derived from Reserve Bank of Australia cross-rates.
- The research bundle holds India, Brazil, Colombia and Costa Rica flat at their junior factor through AB8 and then applies a global corporate floor from AB9 upward, which produces a step rather than a curve. This report converts that step into a level-dependent factor that is calibrated to match the director row, so mid-ladder cells in those four markets sit above the bundle's own flat figure.
- China is the one low-cost market with no step: its 0.30 factor already equals the global director floor, so it is modelled flat.
- A total compensation cell is base plus target bonus plus the modelled annual equity midpoint. Sign-on payments, relocation, shift premiums and one-time retention awards are excluded, and the bundle's separate 8 to 12 percent benefits load is not carried into these totals.
- Where no direct city observation exists, the cell is marked modelled and should be treated as a planning envelope rather than a benchmark.
Variable Pay & Annual Cash Incentive
Abbott discloses the executive annual incentive in forensic detail, including each named officer's goal score, and discloses nothing at all about the employee bonus grid. Employee payout timing and history
Abbott publishes no bonus-target grid by band, no weighting between company, business and individual results, no payout cadence and no companywide payout history. The 2025 named executive outcomes cover five people and should never be read as a companywide multiplier. Every band target below AB11 here is modelled from the research bundle.
Sales and special incentives
Abbott is a healthcare products company with large field organisations in medical devices, diagnostics, established pharmaceuticals and nutrition. It discloses no quota structure, commission rate, accelerator, territory plan or draw arrangement. Sales roles in this model carry the same modelled target as their band peers, which will understate on-target earnings for quota-carrying representatives and overstate the certainty of the number.
Equity — RSUs, PSUs, Options & ESPP
Abbott is a United States issuer, so employee equity means stock options, restricted stock, restricted stock units, performance restricted shares and employee share purchases rather than an Indian-style employee stock ownership plan. Two facts define the picture: the 2025 Form 10-K says the long-term incentive programme is generally available beginning at manager level, and the non-US employee stock purchase plan is the only genuinely broad-based ownership mechanism, reaching roughly 60,000 people.
- A single utilisation percentage is not comparable across the 2017 and 2026 programs because the 2026 program reset the authorisation and changed how full-value awards consume the reserve. The honest disclosed facts are about 51 million shares left under the 2017 plan at the 2025 year end, 140 million newly authorised for 2026 and 15 million reserved for the non-US purchase plan.
- Abbott had not published a post-approval utilisation table for the 2026 program by the research cut-off, so any current utilisation figure would be speculative.
- Grant volume under the old plan in FY2025 was 1,486,579 options, 365,499 restricted stock awards and 4,439,430 restricted stock units. The first half of 2026 ran higher, at 2,000,814 options, 449,237 restricted stock awards and 4,999,652 restricted stock units.
- At 30 June 2026 there were 22,967,126 options outstanding, of which 19,455,098 were exercisable, at weighted-average exercise prices of $95.21 and $90.62. Because Abbott still grants options, an employee's outcome depends on the share price clearing the strike, not only on vesting.
Equity plan capacity and grant activity
Vesting — common reported employee schedule
Options under the incentive stock program generally become exercisable in one-third instalments after each of the first three years and carry a maximum ten-year term. Restricted stock awards and restricted stock units generally run three years, and the Indian affiliate's parent-company restricted stock units follow the same one-third annual pattern. Performance restricted shares granted to named executives run a three-year term against a minimum return-on-equity hurdle, described in the proxy as a 15 percent adjusted return on equity, with no more than one third able to vest in any single year. The 2026 program adds a general one-year minimum vesting rule for all new awards, subject to a 5 percent exception pool.
Eligibility by hierarchy level
- The single most useful equity fact Abbott publishes is the 2025 Form 10-K statement that the global long-term incentive programme is generally available beginning at manager level. The word generally matters: it is neither a guarantee for every manager nor a bar on exceptional grants below that point.
- That threshold is the only public part. Abbott publishes no standard grant table, no grant value by band and no country schedule, so the AB3 to AB10 grant midpoints used in this report are modelled from the research bundle and clearly labelled as such.
- Modelled annual grant ranges run $0 to $3,000 at AB3, $2,000 to $12,000 at AB5, $10,000 to $60,000 at AB7, $75,000 to $300,000 at AB9 and $250,000 to $900,000 at AB10. At the $116.67 reference price those translate to roughly 17 to 104 shares at AB5 and 647 to 2,592 shares at AB9.
- Options are still a live instrument at Abbott, which is unusual among large-cap employers in 2026. The chief executive's 2025 long-term incentive was split evenly between options and performance restricted shares, so half of the headline value only pays if the share price rises above the strike.
- The non-US employee stock purchase plan is legally broad while the incentive program is legally broad but economically selective. Broad eligibility under the 2026 program should not be read as universal annual restricted stock units.

Named executive target equity
| Executive | Target | Units / structure |
|---|---|---|
Robert B. Ford Chairman and Chief Executive Officer | $17.58M 2025 long-term incentive value | Split 50 percent stock options and 50 percent performance restricted shares, set at 110 percent of the market-value equity guideline used for a peer-group chief executive. The February 2026 grant was 83,464 performance restricted shares and 344,066 options at a $114.60 exercise price. |
Philip P. Boudreau Executive Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer | $6.09M 2025 grant-date equity | $3,045,935 of stock awards and $3,046,350 of option awards, the near-even split used across the officer group. |
Lisa D. Earnhardt Executive Vice President and Group President, Medical Devices | $5.09M 2025 grant-date equity | $2,543,989 of stock awards and $2,544,364 of option awards. She exercised 91,167 legacy options at $80.98 with a same-day sale in March 2025, a pre-tax spread of about $4.82 million. |
Daniel G. Salvadori Executive Vice President and Group President, Established Pharmaceuticals and Nutrition | $4.48M 2025 grant-date equity | $2,238,786 of stock awards and $2,239,049 of option awards. The February 2026 grant was 21,644 performance restricted shares and 89,226 options at $114.60, with 29,742 options becoming exercisable in each of 2027, 2028 and 2029. |
Christopher J. Scoggins Executive Vice President, Diabetes Care | $3.33M 2025 grant-date equity | $1,662,503 of stock awards and $1,662,743 of option awards, the smallest of the five named executive equity packages. |
Executive Compensation
2025 Summary Compensation Table values from the 2026 proxy statement filed on 13 March 2026. Equity is a grant-date accounting value rather than cash received, and 2025 is a year where the divergence is unusually visible because the chief executive's annual incentive paid only 75 percent of target.
Reading the package
Salary was about 6.2 percent of Robert Ford's 2025 reported total and the grant-date value of stock and option awards about 72.6 percent. Half of that equity was stock options, so a meaningful share of the headline figure only converts into money if the share price clears a $114.60-area strike. The annual incentive paid 75.0 percent of a 175 percent target, which is why the cash portion of the package sits well below its own design point for the year.
Medtronic and Becton Dickinson run non-calendar fiscal years, so their totals are not measured over the same period as Abbott's. Every figure is a grant-date accounting total, sensitive to option valuation assumptions, pension-value movements and one-time awards, and none of them equals realised pay. Abbott sits second in this set, below Johnson & Johnson and above Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Stryker and Becton Dickinson.

Abbott's senior team was stable through 2025 and 2026 in a way that most large-cap peers were not. Robert Ford has held the chairman and chief executive roles throughout, Philip Boudreau served as chief financial officer, and the group president layer covered Medical Devices, Established Pharmaceuticals and Nutrition and Diabetes Care. The largest structural event was the completion of the Exact Sciences acquisition in March 2026, which brought a substantial diagnostics workforce and converted equity into the group.
The 2025 incentive outcomes are the most instructive part of the disclosure. Lisa Earnhardt, Daniel Salvadori and Christopher Scoggins all carried a 115 percent target on salaries within $70,000 of each other, and their payouts ranged from $388,200 to $1,283,400 because the division scorecards diverged. Pension and deferred-compensation movements also distort the totals: Christopher Scoggins' $1,213,176 pension change is larger than Daniel Salvadori's entire annual incentive, which is why the proxy also publishes totals excluding the pension change.
Board compensation framework
| Element | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cash fee | $10,500 | Paid to each non-employee director, equivalent to $126,000 a year. Robert Ford receives no additional compensation for board or committee service. |
| Annual restricted stock unit award | About $210,000 | Directors elected at the 2025 annual meeting received vested restricted stock units worth approximately $210,000, disclosed as 1,635 units. |
| Committee, chair and lead-director fees | Additive | Committee, chair and lead-director fees are paid on top of the monthly cash fee. The individual amounts are not broken out in the research sources. |
| Annual grant-date cap | $500,000 | The 2026 Incentive Stock Program permits up to $500,000 of grant-date fair value to a single non-employee director in a calendar year, well above the current programme level. |
Actual total director compensation varied by role and by the timing of elections during the year, and this report models a $336,000 package as the $126,000 annualised cash fee plus the roughly $210,000 restricted stock unit award. Committee and chair service pushes several directors above that.
Regional heads and other officers
Abbott is a United States issuer and does not use the Indian key managerial personnel disclosure format at parent level. Compensation for the chief human resources officer, chief technology officer, general counsel, company secretary and regional heads is not individually disclosed unless the person is a named executive officer or a director in the relevant filing. The one exception created by a different regime is Abbott India Limited, whose FY2025-26 annual report discloses managing director Kartik Rajendran at ₹6.44 crore, comprising ₹3.39 crore of salary and allowances, ₹1.98 crore of perquisites, ₹0.16 crore of provident-fund contribution and ₹0.91 crore of performance-linked incentive, at 57.4 times that company's own median employee.
Insider Trades — SEC Forms 3/4/5
Abbott is NYSE-listed, so the governing record is SEC Section 16 Forms 3, 4 and 5. Abbott India Limited is a separately listed Indian affiliate, and SEBI takeover-code promoter filings or BSE and NSE employee share allotment notices do not govern parent-company Abbott Laboratories equity. Code F lines below are shares withheld to settle tax on a vesting event, not a decision to sell.

Benefits & Perks
Abbott documents its United States benefits in unusual detail on its careers pages and documents almost nothing elsewhere. Outside the United States the evidence thins to statutory baselines, Abbott job materials and the two Indian and Australian sources in the research bundle, which is why several rows below say so plainly.
United States
- Retirement — Stock Retirement Plan with a 5 percent company contribution. Enrolment is immediate and company contributions vest after two years. The standard structure provides a 5 percent company contribution when the employee contributes at least 2 percent of eligible pay. [official]
- Retirement — Freedom 2 Save student-loan alternative. Employees paying at least 2 percent of eligible pay toward qualifying student loans receive the same 5 percent company contribution without having to fund the retirement plan themselves. It is one of the few named programmes of its kind at this scale. [official]
- Medical — Coverage from the first day for eligible employees. Multiple medical options plus prescription, dental, vision, mental-health and preventive cover. Abbott contributes $200 to an employee-only health savings account and $400 for family cover, and healthcare and dependent-care flexible spending accounts are available. [official]
- Insurance — Basic life and accidental-death cover at no employee cost. Long-term disability and medical-leave programmes are described alongside it on the United States benefits page. [official]
- Leave — Three weeks vacation and 15 paid holidays. New full-time employees start at three weeks. The holiday total is 10 designated days plus 5 employee-scheduled credit days. [official]
- Family — Up to eight weeks paid parental leave. 320 hours for eligible birth, adoptive, foster and qualifying pre-placement parents, with adoption reimbursement up to $20,000. [official]
- Growth — Tuition reimbursement up to $10,000 a year. Up to $7,000 a year for undergraduate study and $10,000 for graduate study, plus a confidential employee assistance programme and family-care resources. [official]
Global programs
- Equity — 2026 non-US employee stock purchase plan. Roughly 60,000 employees in more than 60 countries can buy shares at 85 percent of the lower of the cycle-start and cycle-end price through payroll deductions of 1 to 10 percent, capped at $12,500 a purchase cycle. Executive officers are excluded from the broad-based pool. [official]
- Growth — Development and mobility. Mentoring, leadership training, personalised development tools, global on-demand, online and in-person learning, and high-potential programmes. [official]
- Governance — Pay-equity reviews. Abbott says its reviews consider market, gender, race, ethnicity, job grade and position level, and that adjustments are made where needed. It does not publish adjusted pay-gap statistics by country. [official]
- Performance — Annual performance management at every level. Abbott confirms an annual process. The rating scale, the distribution and the global effective date for pay changes are not published. [official]
- Work design — Flex Work. Abbott describes Flex Work in the United States. A single global remote-work entitlement or sabbatical policy is not published. [official]
Benefit fields not publicly quantified
The gap between the United States benefit disclosure and everywhere else is the single largest evidence asymmetry in this report. For India, Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore, China, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and the United Arab Emirates, no Abbott benefit page was located, so the rows above give the statutory baseline and say what is missing rather than filling the gap with a plausible-looking number.
Performance Review & Pay Progression
Abbott confirms an annual performance-management process at every level and discloses the executive scorecard in detail, down to each named officer's goal percentage. Below the officer layer it publishes nothing: no rating labels, no distribution, no merit matrix, no promotion rule and no effective date.

The one hard pay-movement number in the sources comes from India, where company law forces disclosure: Abbott India Limited reported a 16.90 percent rise in median remuneration and a 9.10 percent average salary increase for employees other than managerial personnel in FY2025-26 across 3,679 permanent employees. That is a single affiliate in a single high-inflation market and is not a proxy for Abbott's global merit budget. Executive bonuses are determined after the year end and paid in February in the proxy examples, but that cadence should not be generalised to the wider workforce.
Pay progression evidence
Modelled progression, not Abbott policy: AB1 to AB2 typically takes 1 to 2 years for an 8 to 15 percent base increase; AB2 to AB3 takes 1 to 3 years for 10 to 18 percent; AB3 to AB4 takes 2 to 4 years for 8 to 15 percent; AB4 to AB5 takes 2 to 4 years for 10 to 18 percent; AB5 to AB6 takes 2 to 5 years for 10 to 20 percent; AB6 to AB7 takes 2 to 5 years for 12 to 22 percent; AB7 to AB8 takes 3 to 5 years for 12 to 25 percent; AB8 to AB9 takes 3 to 6 years for 15 to 30 percent; AB9 to AB10 takes 3 to 7 years for 15 to 35 percent; and AB10 to AB11 takes 4 to 8 years for 20 to 50 percent. Above that the move is a committee and market-benchmark decision rather than a promotion increase. From AB6 upward the equity reset usually matters more than the cash step.
H-1B / LCA Visa Footprint — United States
Abbott is a modest H-1B sponsor by large-cap standards, with filings concentrated in Illinois, California, Ohio, Texas and Minnesota engineering and technical roles. The aggregators disagree materially on Abbott's counts because filings split across the parent entity and acquired subsidiaries such as St. Jude Medical, and because each snapshot uses a different fiscal-year filter. Labour condition application wages are proffered base salary only.
Dataset summary
| Dataset | Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| MyVisaJobs employer profile | 75 labour condition applications and 43 of 43 petitions approved for FY2026 | Updated 18 August 2026. Also the source for the FY2025, FY2024 and FY2023 average proffered wages. |
| H1BGrader FY2026 aggregate | 47 certified applications at a $140,000 median | Mean $137,436, 75th percentile $155,000, 90th percentile $170,000 and a range of $80,000 to $205,000. The snapshot exposes no 25th percentile, so none is shown. |
| H1BGrader prevailing wage levels | Level II 14 records, Level III 15 records and Level IV 16 records | Only two Level I filings appear, and the source snippet did not carry a full percentile table for that cohort. |
| Ellis worksite corpus | 556 historical records across eleven cities | A multi-year corpus with a different aggregation window from the FY2026 snapshots, so the two must never be summed or treated as one denominator. |
| Historical sponsor snapshots | A roughly $115,000 median and $130,000 75th percentile in an older sponsor view | Retained separately rather than blended into the current figures, because the period label is different. |
City-level H-1B wage history
| City | P25 | Median | P75 | Records |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Abbott Park, Illinois Percentiles modelled from visible wage examples in the MyVisaJobs extract; the larger Ellis corpus shows a $108,919 median across 194 historical records. | $86K | $100,000 | $125K | 15 |
Alameda, California Diabetes Care and device engineering worksite. The Ellis corpus shows a $113,500 median across 60 historical records on a $66,350 to $190,000 span. | $115K | $124,000 | $172K | 12 |
Columbus, Ohio Nutrition manufacturing and engineering. The Ellis corpus shows a lower $91,364 median across 24 historical records. | $95K | $111,000 | $150K | 16 |
Plymouth, Minnesota Medical-device engineering; percentiles modelled from visible wage examples and the record count is approximate. | $98K | $120,000 | $145K | 8 |
Sylmar, California Filed under the St. Jude Medical legal entity rather than Abbott Laboratories, so these records should not be merged with the parent counts. | $110K | $130,000 | $160K | 52 |
Irving, Texas Ellis historical corpus. The outer columns here are the observed minimum and maximum rather than true quartiles. | $56K | $95,000 | $158K | 78 |
Santa Clara, California Ellis historical corpus with the widest observed spread of any Abbott worksite. The outer columns are the observed minimum and maximum. | $70K | $110,000 | $285K | 57 |
Waukegan, Illinois Ellis historical corpus, and the highest median of the Illinois worksites. The outer columns are the observed minimum and maximum. | $71K | $140,000 | $205K | 51 |
All-years aggregates. P25/P75 are rounded reconstruction values marked modeled; medians and record counts are the stronger fields.
Selected title / worksite records
| Title | Worksite | Proffered wage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prevailing wage Level II | United States, FY2026 certified applications | $117,500 median across 14 filings | 75th percentile $131,000 and maximum $158,000. |
| Prevailing wage Level III | United States, FY2026 certified applications | $137,000 median across 15 filings | 75th percentile $145,000 and maximum $188,000. |
| Prevailing wage Level IV | United States, FY2026 certified applications | $153,000 median across 16 filings | 75th percentile $169,000 and maximum $205,000, the top of the whole FY2026 distribution. |
| Prevailing wage Level I | United States, FY2026 certified applications | 2 filings only | The retrieved snapshot did not expose a full percentile table for Level I, so no median is stated. |
| FY2026 wage distribution | H1BGrader aggregate across 47 applications | $137,436 mean and $140,000 median | Minimum $80,000, 75th percentile $155,000, 90th percentile $170,000 and maximum $205,000. |
| Legal entity split | Abbott Laboratories and St. Jude Medical | Filed separately | Sylmar worksites carry their own filing history under the acquired entity. Combining them with the parent overstates Abbott Laboratories volume and understates its median. |
Reading the data correctly
- Labour condition application wages are proffered base salary. They exclude the annual incentive, any equity grant and the employee stock purchase plan discount, so they cannot be compared with a total compensation figure.
- A labour condition application is a filing, not a hire. Certified applications exceed petitions, and petitions exceed actual employees.
- The 43 of 43 approval figure is a snapshot for the Abbott Laboratories entity on 18 August 2026. It does not establish a universal 100 percent rate across every Abbott subsidiary, every petition type or the remainder of the fiscal year.
- Abbott's acquisition history fragments the data. St. Jude Medical, Alere and now Exact Sciences filings can appear under their own legal names, so entity scope must be checked before any comparison.
- The two research bundles disagree on the FY2026 median, at about $135,000 and $140,000, and on the application count, at 75 and 47. Both figures are preserved here rather than averaged into a false precision.
Key Nuances & Insights
Abbott has published Job Grade 16 and Job Grade 17 on individual postings and nothing else. AB1 to AB12 is a normalised comparison scale built for this report. It is useful for orienting an offer; it is not something to quote back in a negotiation as if it were Abbott nomenclature.
The single most useful equity disclosure is the 2025 Form 10-K line that the global long-term incentive programme is generally available beginning at manager level. That puts a real ownership layer around AB6, well below the director tier where most people assume equity starts.
Knowing that managers are generally eligible tells you nothing about how much. Abbott publishes no grant table by grade or country, so every grant range below the named executives in this report is modelled and should be treated as a planning envelope.
The 2025 chief executive long-term incentive was split evenly between stock options and performance restricted shares, and 22.97 million options were outstanding at 30 June 2026 at a $95.21 weighted-average strike. Half of a headline equity number that only pays above a strike price is a materially different instrument from a restricted stock unit.
Roughly 60,000 employees in more than 60 countries can buy shares at 85 percent of the lower of the cycle-start and cycle-end price. That is more people than the incentive programme reaches in any plausible reading, and it is the only equity component an employee can size themselves.
The plan is explicitly a non-US programme. American employees rely on the incentive programme and the Stock Retirement Plan instead, which inverts the usual assumption that headquarters staff get the best equity access.
Three group executives with identical 115 percent targets and salaries within $70,000 of each other were paid $1,283,400, $1,095,300 and $388,200 for 2025. Business-unit performance, not level, is what moved the money.
The 2025 corporate goal score was 75.00 percent against 109.0 percent in 2024 and 112.2 percent in 2023, so Robert Ford's annual incentive fell about $656,000 below target. Reported total compensation still rose on equity value, which is the clearest illustration of why grant-date accounting is not realised pay.
Applying an Indian or Latin American multiplier mechanically to a corporate officer would be misleading, so the research model applies a global floor from director upward. That is why the Indian and Brazilian columns compress towards the anchor at the senior bands rather than staying at their junior ratio.
Abbott India Limited is a separately listed affiliate with its own statutory disclosures, its own median-remuneration series and no local stock option plan. Its managing director's ₹6.44 crore package and its 57.4 times ratio belong to that entity, not to Abbott Laboratories.
St. Jude Medical, Alere and Exact Sciences legal entities persist in visa records, payroll systems and Form 4 filings after integration. The Sylmar visa records still file under St. Jude Medical, and 1,476,916 converted Exact Sciences restricted stock units now sit inside Abbott's equity base.
Executive pay is forensic because the SEC requires it and Indian company law forces a parallel disclosure at the affiliate. Ordinary global employee pay has no such requirement, so it is market observation with weaker confidence, and the gap between the two is a disclosure artefact rather than a statement about how Abbott pays.
Research control
Abbott's chief executive total sits second in this medical-technology comparison set at $24.20 million, below Johnson & Johnson's $32.76 million and above Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Stryker and Becton Dickinson, which cluster between $17.13 million and $23.53 million. The 166:1 ratio is comparatively low for a company this size, and the reason is the denominator: a $145,528 global median employee is high because Abbott's workforce is weighted towards regulated manufacturing, laboratory, engineering and field-sales work rather than low-paid service roles, and because the median figure includes $16,795 of medical and dental benefit cost.

Known gaps and diligence before relying on a cell
- 1The two research bundles use different foreign-exchange snapshots for the same 25 August 2026 date, for example 95.720280 against 95.4075 rupees to the dollar. This report standardises on the bundle whose rates are traceable to Reserve Bank of Australia cross-rates, which changes converted values by well under half a percent.
- 2The bundles disagree on several United States city factors: Alameda at 1.15 against 1.18, Sylmar at 1.08 against 1.12, Columbus at 0.92 against 0.88, Austin at 0.98 against 0.95 and Plymouth at 1.00 against 0.95. This report uses the first bundle's set because it expresses every city against the Abbott Park anchor directly rather than against a per-country base.
- 3The two bundles build entirely different ladders, AB1 to AB12 against A0 to A8, and their United States anchors are not comparable row by row. This report uses the twelve-band ladder because it is the one with a full location matrix behind it, and folds the second bundle's evidence in as calibration rather than as rows.
- 4The first bundle holds India, Brazil, Colombia and Costa Rica flat at their junior factor through AB8 and then jumps to a global corporate floor at AB9. That step cannot be represented as a single factor, so this report interpolates a level-dependent factor calibrated to match the director row. Mid-ladder cells in those four markets therefore sit above the bundle's own flat figure and should be treated as the softest numbers in the model.
- 5The bundles disagree on the FY2026 H-1B picture: 75 applications and a roughly $135,000 median in one, 47 applications and a $140,000 median in the other. Both are preserved separately in the visa section rather than averaged.
- 6City-level H-1B percentiles come from two incompatible corpora. The MyVisaJobs-derived table carries quartiles for five cities; the Ellis corpus carries a median with an observed minimum and maximum for eleven. Where the Ellis figures are used, the outer columns are the observed extremes rather than true quartiles, and each row says so.
- 7Abbott's 2025 restructuring charge of $287.00 million is disclosed without any workforce breakdown, so it cannot be read as evidence of a salary freeze, a pay cut or a headcount action of any particular size.
- 8The August 2026 headline of 122,000 employees and the 2025 year-end figure of roughly 115,000 are not measured on the same basis, and the Exact Sciences acquisition sits between them. The increase should not be read as organic hiring.
- 9Abbott discloses no geographic revenue split in either research bundle, so no regional revenue panel is shown rather than repurposing the panel for something else.
- 10No companywide 2026 salary hike percentage, pay freeze, salary cut, campus-offer revision or off-cycle correction was located in any source. The only pay-movement figures anywhere in the set are Abbott India's 16.90 percent median-remuneration rise and 9.10 percent non-managerial average increase.

Abbott's 2026 was dominated by two events with real compensation consequences: the completion of the Exact Sciences acquisition in March and the shareholder reset of the whole equity architecture in April. No companywide salary action was announced in any reviewed source.
Abbott publishes no attrition rate at any level, no city headcount and no annual headcount series in a form that can be trended cleanly, so the three points above are snapshots on different bases rather than a growth curve. The only granular workforce numbers anywhere in the sources are country-level: more than 41,000 in the United States, nearly 3,000 in Ireland across ten sites and more than 2,000 in the United Kingdom.
More than 41,000 of them are in the United States. The headline sits above the roughly 115,000 reported at the 2025 year end, with the Exact Sciences acquisition explaining part of the gap.
The FY2025-26 annual report also gives a 9.10 percent average salary increase for employees other than managerial personnel across 3,679 permanent employees. It is the only concrete pay-movement figure anywhere in the sources.
Sales rose 13.0 percent reported and 4.8 percent comparable, and the 2026 adjusted earnings outlook was lifted to $5.45 to $5.60. Better results improve the incentive backdrop without promising any workforce payout.
140 million incentive shares and 15 million purchase-plan shares were authorised, and the 2017 program closed to new grants. It is the largest reset of Abbott's equity architecture in nearly a decade.
The roughly $20.6 billion deal added a major diagnostics workforce and converted 1,476,916 unvested Exact Sciences restricted stock units into Abbott units at a $105.62 accounting fair value.
Robert Ford's annual incentive paid 75.0 percent of target on a 75.00 percent corporate goal score, against a $145,528 median employee.
Robert Ford received 83,464 performance restricted shares and 344,066 options at a $114.60 exercise price, and Daniel Salvadori received 21,644 performance restricted shares and 89,226 options on the same terms.
Roughly 115,000 employees with 69 percent outside the United States, plus the disclosure that the global long-term incentive programme is generally available beginning at manager level.
An open-market purchase of about $2.01 million at roughly $107 a share, the only insider buy in the current filing window.
The charge shows active cost action during the year, but Abbott discloses no workforce breakdown, so it does not by itself evidence a salary freeze, a pay cut or a headcount reduction of any particular size.
